What is Single Side Band or SSB?

SSB is a common mode of voice operation and is a form of AM that uses half the wave to transmit the same information that can be transmitted by full wave AM. That's why the effective power of SSB is more then twice that of standard AM. By it's nature it allows more power output and range then regular AM. Some CB'ers use this mode.

some radios have a ssb switch that allows you to talk on SSB frequencies.

The pic is of a Texas star power linear, for use with CB radios to boost the radios power output. This allows you to talk further.

thanks- I understand the amp, but would the SSB be used along with, or instead of, AM?
    thanks for the reply

I assume this isn't useful as a countermeasure, since most truckers aren't using sideband?

Correct, unless you know truckers to talk to, it isn't useful at all... NOW if you take a trip often enough and get to know a few truckers

In my case, frankly, I don't want to know them! I pass on information every time I see a bear to do my part, and ask the same from them. That's as far as I take my CB social interaction (well, and other road reports, etc). Maybe its just the truckers I've experienced listening to!

thanks guys- i was just clarifying if it was a different tansmission altogether, or if I could use it along with the am band.. sorry to sound dense, but if I am understanding correctly, if I have both switches, AM and SSB, on, I will transmit on both bands?
    thanks for the help guys..

Listening to the truckers on the CB makes daytime talk shows seem tame. I can't believe the garbage they talk about, I wish there was a speedtrap info only channel and I didn't have to listen to them share their views on politics, religion, women (lot lizards). But when they give you info on a speedtrap and it gives you a good save it makes it all worth it.

I'm right with you on that- strictly traffic/bear updates would be ideal.
I find the chatter gets worse in the city (obviously) but I havent been to disappointed on the interstates. a lot less garbage.
when I get of the highway, i just crank the squelch to keep it close range.
