Default FW 3.818, with POP and without? *Nevermind, I have 3.813*

I have a 1.8 V1 which I got (as an upgrade replacement from a 1.7) in late June 2004, which (upon checking today) has the 3.818 firmware. It does not have POP as far as I know, but some signatures here show that there are V1s out there with 3.818 firmware and POP2. How is this possible? Either the firmware has the POP support or it doesn't, or is the POP upgrade a change to the hardware rather than software?

Maybe my unit has POP but it's turned off by default, and they changed it to on by default in newer firmware builds?

POP is option J. You should definitely have it, and it was supposed to be turned on from the factory (arrow pointing up). Doesn't it display "P...o...P" when you turn it on?

No "P...o...p" on power up. Valentine never even announced POP support on their website until December of last year. I got this V1 in late June. From what I've read V1s with POP started to appear in July. I'll have to try switching the J option in programming mode, but it's definitely not active now and all the programming "switches" are at their factory defaults (no "P" on power-up either).

Also, what firmware version adds the "Junk" feature? And what's the difference between "POP1" and "POP2"?

do yourself a favor and consider yourself lucky not to have POP on your V1!

Brent V. is going to have a sit down with Mike V. and discuss this debacle. He shouldve stuck by his guns and continue to denounce all this POP crap. However, he had to make a business decision. Boy would he have come out sparkling like a diamond even more if he would've said screw POP detection.

Late june is precisely when I got mine and it originally had version 3.813, which doesn't have POP. Maybe you misread the display? You're right that POP wasn't supported when you bought it. I think 3.816 was the first version with POP and then 3.818 was the first version to add the "Junk" feature.

I'm willing to bet that you have 3.813, not 3.818.

I doubt he'd have come out like a "sparkling diamond." He may be right about errors inherent to POP radar. And you may be right that it's a one in a million chance of getting hit with POP radar at this time. And it may even be that cops will use POP properly when the do get it, and they will only issue a ticket with standard instant-on radar. But if you CAN detect POP then it will be a blessing in disguise. Why? I'll explain.

If a cop thinks that his radar can't be detected do you think that he's going to be really sneaky about how he uses it? Hell no. He's just going to POP POP POP-away at traffic because it doesn't matter...as far as he knows. Meanwhile you're tooling along with your POP-capable detector and you start to get instant alerts. Instead of waiting for you to come around the corner before he pulled the trigger, the cop gave you plenty of warning by zapping every car that came along. You slowed down way in advance while some other dude with an older detector (maybe even a V1) gets nailed.

Now, I don't know if our technology is really there yet. But when it is, POP will be a gift and the tables will turn back in our favor. Score one for the good guys.

Think of POP as being the Plasma TVs of 4 years ago.... the good ones were 20k, but no one knew (except the manufacturers) about the burn-in problems with them.. the smart people waited 4 years and went with DLP displays or are waiting till they completely fix the plasma problems.

    or

the 01 BMW M3 came in only 6 spd manual... numerous problems were also occuring as catastrophic engine failures were common...(connecting rod bearing failure = kaboom) in 02 they fixed it and ALSO offered SMG.. and now, you can get an 05 M comp. package for 4k more!! and you are almost on par with the Euro M3 CSL!! Do you know how many people in my club that have an E46 are upset that they didnt wait or are angry that bmw held off till the end to offer the best M ?-

point being, dont buy something brand spanking new... there are too many bugs and glitches.. wait till they hash it out, perfect it, then go for the buy. Until VR fixes the problems, POP is readily used, and there arent new firmware upgrades every other week, I am sticking with the 3.813.

How many people have sent in their V1 for POP1, then sent it back for POP2, then sent it back to fix the J function, then sent it back to get the Euro mode? They shouldve done enough testing, research and development before releasing half ass work.

I'm sorry, but it doesnt sit well with the consumer when a business is conducted like this.

But at least VR is dedicated enough to fixing any issues unlike companies like RMR

Ok, brick, I hereby grant you permission to whack me upside the head with a Kustom ProLaser III. I checked my firmware this morning and it is indeed 3.813, not 3.818 like I thought yesterday.

It's what I get for relying on my slowly deteriorating grey matter rather than writing the number down. DOH!

I guess this thread is now pointless. I'm updating my signature now... ops:

And don't forget the multiple K band bogy on a single issue, although I don't know what version that started with you might have it as well. This is why I returned my 3.818 and kept my 2.879
And now the 3.824 with a section 7 malfunction.

VR, STOP RELEASING NEW VERSIONS UNTIL YOU HAVE IT RIGHT!
