Well the V1 IS the top radar detector, but good luck finding it for $200. Try ebay, but you'll likely be getting a stolen one that is all jacked up and you'll be spending more to get it tuned up/upgraded anyway. I suggest you save your pennies if you want a great detector.

But you might also look at the Beltronic Vectors (specifically the 940).

How much is V1 IS? How much should I save up for decent radar dector?

Wallymart is selling the Beltronics 995 for $239.

    Otherwise...

    9500i $449 (red display)
    STi $499
    V1 $399 or $369 for a refurbish unit
    rx65 $329 (red display)
    X50 $299 (red display)
995 $299 ...these are the retail prices

These are the top detectors with premium features. There are the Bel 955 series, has nearly the same if not the same performance as the 995, but with a few less creature comfort features.

    The 955 retails for $199

ur better off just dropping the extra $200 for a v1 rather then getting a bel vector for around that...true they are still great for the price but a v1 is a v1...this website is operated by many members on this forum...it is the only non-biased you will probably ever see www.guysoflidar.com and http://guysoflidar.com/august-2007/r...ctor-test.html

I second that too, I just offered the vector as a lower-priced option. I got one but I have a really bad problem with wanting the next step up. I really wish I spend the extra $200 in the first place for the V1.

Sidekick456 has been jumped into the gang, "Zombie Style"! LOL :P He said <$200 because he has an $8000 dental bill coming up and a money grubbing, um, I mean, budget conscious wife.

Edit: Oops, got my newbies mixed up.

If your mostly a highway speeder, its the V1, hands down. If you mostly drive in large metro areas with alot of false alarms, get the 9500i.

If you cant buy the V1 now....SLOW DOWN until you can.

even if you buy any other dectector youll be buying an
inferior product compared to the V1.

Im sure im not the only person on here thats own other
detectors (at least three from escort alone) before i finally
freekin' wised up and bought THE BEST !

I'd be MONEY ahead if id saved up and bought the V1 in the
    beginning !

As they say...you can pay me now or you can pay me later !

My first RD, I was looking between 8500, 985, and a V1. These were the top 3 RD's at that time. The Escort and Bel were the same price $250 more or less. The V1 $399. I really could not afford the $399 price tag. I got the 985 for the features and savings. I have had excellent performance with a top tier Beltronics detector. I would expect sidekick to come away with a same very capable detector.
