Default Impressions of 3.813 vs. 3.864

I got tired of all the ghosting on my 3.863, so I sent it in for a tune late last year. The tech at VR said they could not replicate the problem, but they upgraded the parts that are known to cause ghosting, and upgraded to 3.864. I get it back, still ghosts.

I was watching ebay for a while, and picked up 3.813, after calling VR to see if it was stolen. It was not, and I got it for a pretty good price. I was expecting the 3.813 not to work correctly, and I was correct, it was very slow to respond on K and X. Laser was fine though. I sent it in to VR for a tune up, and it came back one week ago.

I noticed that the 3.864 holds on to the K band signal 1.5 seconds longer than the 3.813, I assume that is true for all bands. This gives the illusion that the 3.864 is more sensitive, but that is not true. My 3.813 is as sensitive as my 3.864 with POP on detecting K band. The 3.813 is more sensitive on X band, by about ~100 feet, but that is based on X door openers. 3.813 falses on KA when I go up my driveway from the sat dish, just like the 3.864. Laser is very sensitive.

I am not sure when I will sell my 3.864, but I like the 3.813, and the arrows are a bit more accurate. I was really annoyed by the ghosting and band misidentificationon the 3.864.

I think all the new versions from 3.863+ ghost because they are very sensitive. I noticed that my 3.863 doesn't ghost until I am 100 ft from the source.

That is strange. My 3.863 used to ghost first three months and then after that, it was gone and also the false from Cobra was gone too. I don't know how that happened after three months of us that it become a sudden "golden" radar detector. The performance seem to be same especially during the cool days since it the performance seem to decrease during hot days of course and it's been over a 1.3 years of use now. I'm never going to upgrade this version.

If I can remember that other members do love their 3.863 also too. I have to say that is the best post-pop version there is.

I would love to get 3.813 anytime but I'm too lazy to purchase something that there is no need for it yet.

I can only confirm one time when my 3.864 'ghosted' if you can call it that. Sometimes the arrows get confused, but with so many things to reflect off of it's hard to blame the detector. I think the same thing happend with my ghosting scenario; just a victim of reflections. Here's the scenario:

Two lane road in each direction, traveling North. Two LEO's, both running X band radar, facing South parked in a parking lot on the opposite side of the road. To my right are those large sound barrier wall panels that are constructed to keep the neoghborhood people from complaining about noise. As I approached them, the V1 told me 2 bogeys, then 3, flipping back and forth, then stayed on 3 'til I passed. In this case the arrows were a bit confused too.

When the V1 reports a (usually very strong) source as multiple sources.

    Ghosting: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx5ATNeePwo"]YouTube - Outrun's Ghosting V1[/ame]

That is what mine did, bogey counter was useless, and as a result the arrows are pretty much worthless too. My 3.813 has not ghosted yet.

Here is my original post about ghosting and band mis ID.

HappyA$$ has a great video showing ghosting too: http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...-w-videos.html

I am not sure if the very newest V1s still ghost.

What makes it bad is that the V1's bogey counter is one of the features that is supposed to seperate it from the others but many times it does not work properly
