    Default My First Radar Detector..

Well hello everyone.. I must start off by saying I came across this website a week or two ago and have been enjoying every minute of it. Just today I became a member. I've learned a lot here and just purchased my first Radar Detector. After weeks or researching and pondering I settled with the finest and THE Valentine One.

I reside in Central Florida.. Near Orlando to be precise. I got the Blendmount mount for the Valentine One as it seemed the most cleanest setup to me. I got my dealer to install it for me and got it powered with the Rear View Mirror. I must say it looks really clean and feels great!

I shall drive around with it without tweaking any of the settings for now but once I get the hang of everything I'll look into changing them. If everyone could please give their input on what settings to go about? I'd say I'm driving equally between the city and highway. But it also leans to each side depending on the times.

I've been using it for the past few days and questions arise in my mind. Sometimes while driving and there are Cop Cars around nothing beeps. To my understanding is that they're not equipped with radars or they might be turned off? Also in these past few days I've been in an encounter with an I/O but luckily it was just as soon as the traffic signal turned green and wasn't even close to speeding..

What else is there that I should know?
    Thank you everyone in advance.
Looking forward to enjoying my time here on the forum and the next few years of pure protection with my Valentine One.

Welcome to the forum and you made the right choice on the V1, do you have any pics of your install. I know that a lot of people on this site don't care for the Blendmount mount because it's is explode to everyone include LEO but if that's what you like it's all good. The best place is above or on the side of your rvm, people if they know you have a rd they will ride on your back.

Currently I don't have any pictures but I've been meaning to take some and shall take some soon.. It does look really good!

I understand its really exposed but living in a place where its legal what difference would it make to the LEO's?

In the neighborhood I live in, literally 5 houses down is where a Police Office lives. His police vehicle is always parked outside and is always off. While coming back home or leaving the Valentine One goes off because of that car. I find it very surprising, what does it mean? While driving around sometimes I come across cops and nothing happens, but here when the car is switched off and no sign of civilization the Radar goes off.. Fascinating..

you have a rd not a cop detector. the sounds you hear is probably a false from surrounding security sensor, door openers..etc. play with it some more and it will find to be usful. you probably see the difference when you on the highway since city use more lidar and too many false from sensors i mention..

    Great choice in detection.
I generally recommend that you use the "A" mode for the first month or two to get used to the detector and the threats in your area. "l" and "L" can be used to quiet the detector when driving in the city. Use it some more and read up on the Valentine section of the forum. We are happy to answer your questions.

    Congrats on the purchase!

There's all kinds of information on this site about programming the V1 and how to use its various modes. Drive with it in "A" mode for a few weeks until you get a feel for it and start to learn what radar bands law enforcement uses in your area. Try to find some members on this site from your area, as they can quickly educate you on how to best program and use the V1 for your area. I've heard that laser is used frequently in Florida, and if that's the case, make sure you realize that a laser detector pretty much only detects laser after the officer has your speed. Laser jammers could be in your future if you want full protection.

And I know I'm stating the obvious, but realize that this is only a radar detector and NOT a cop detector. It will only alert to law enforcement if they have their radar turned on at the time, and you'll quickly discover that most cops don't. Have fun with your V1 and continue to learn and understand its capabilities and limitations so that you can get the most out of it.

    Good luck!

First of all I must say thank you everyone for the quick replies and everything..

Secondly, yes I look forward to driving it a few more weeks and learning everything, should be interesting..

Also, I must say I do know this isn't a cop detector. What I do find surprising is that the cop that lives beside me probably has his Radar on all night which seems to be interesting since I doubt that could be a possibility with the car not running.. There are NO door openers or anything like that, I'm talking about this happening in a neighborhood...

If most cops don't have their Radar turned on, let's say I was driving on the highway and that's where most likely I'd be going over the speed limit. There is a cop car that's there in the side and he has his Radar turned off. He was planing on using I/O.. So I'll be screwed then riiight? What do cops do when they're parked on the side in the highway? Do they usually have their Radars turned on?

With I/O, you're screwed if you're the first car. If you use a rabbit (motorist speeding ahead of you), it shouldn't be a problem, provided your v1 alerts and you adjust your speed.

It really depends on the cop. Alongside the road, they can be using I/O, C/O, LIDAR, or eating donuts. The one's I've passed recently were shooting laser.
