lil review for a lil radar

pro: very accurate, worth more than its price tag
cons: no savable settings or memory
i bought an xtr140 about 3 weeks ago in anticipation of my trip home from lubbock to dallas. i wasnt looking for an all out balls to the wall radar, i just wanted to have something to tell me when my rabbit was being shot at. driving around lubbock i had really good detection range, up to half a mile warning in low traffic conditions, .3 miles average. several times i measure the speed sign which was shooting down the street from .6 miles . ive also run into campus police shooting radar and a few patrol cars on the street raveling in opposite directions

i was looking forward to my trip home to dallas but now that im back i hate to say i didnt see a single dps trooper. the only experience i had with any police officers outside of dallas was in a small town about two hours out of lubbock. a local cruiser was setup on the outskirts of town shooting I/O k/ka (xtr140 doesnt say which) i experienced one blip on the radar as i saw a car in the distance hit the first new speed limit sign as speed increases once you leave city limits, in between us was another car and the alert soon ramped up from 2 to 3 quickly then went away after initial visual contact with the patrol car. i was looking down at the odometer and i had half mile detection from first alert, way more than enough time to react in this speed zone. (im assuming it was instant on radar, i only had a total of maybe three or four alerts, not a constant notification of signal strength

coming back into dallas i passed by dfw intl airport and got what i assume was an sws message. the strength bars cycled up and for about thiry seconds

further down 635 i crested a hill to see light at the bottom and at about the same time i picked up the radar alert from the xtr140. the officer was ahead of me with a customer already pulled over with me approaching from behind. i watched the odometer again and from first alert was half a mile, more suprisingly i recieved radar alert for another half mile after passing the patrol car.

i also had the unpleasant experience of being tailgated by what i assume to be a cobra user. i starting picking up x band and it kept getting stronger and stronger until i had a car on my ass and x band going off full alert, the jetta pulled beside me and i noticed a rd hanging from the winshield and as he passed the x alert ramped down as he got further away.

i had a slight encounter with plano pd's undercover charger, i got a few blips of of detection approaching a largely false area with several large stores on the service road. out of nowhere ahead i see a car swerve across 3 lanes and come to a stop on the shoulder and it was a light blue charger with the spot light on it. as i passed i got a slight full alert but he was drving up into the shrubbery towards the service road as i passed to get back into optimal position

all in all for the $40 i paid for it i have been really impressed. although i havent had a full contact besides with the county officer runnin I/O the whistler has had more than enough time for me to react. the best thing about this model is the lack of false alerts, whistler has really outdone themselves with the XTR line of detectors. if i do get falses they are easy to see as most store detection only happens when i am close enough to read the walgreens or cvs signs out infront of them

p.s. if your interested i can take pics with the skin off. i compared the pics with those of the pro 78 and the 140 has a slightly smaller horn, and a totally different looking circuit board layout. i have the radar placed above the rear view mirror on the tint strip

also if you find yourself without a radar, i was in autozone the other day and they sell the 140 for $49.99

A continuing Whistler tradition, to make their low end detectors perform reasonably well.

nice, i tried 220 once and i was pretty impressed by its performance. the only thing that bugged me sometimes was sudden , short k alerts on higways. does it happen on ur's?

i had one occasion where i had an alert and there was nothing there, it was just two alerts with a strength of 1 k/ka signal. but that was the only one and it was a six hour drive with my whistler dead silent most of the way till i got back into dallas

Thanks for the review Ck15! It is good to see that Whistler offers a low priced alternative that offers good performance...I wish they were advertised more than that other brand that we love to hate!!!

My sister-in-law has been bugging me to find her a RD in the $50 range :roll: ...I think I might have found something for her in the XTR140-Plus I get to continue my support of Whistler!
