Any info appreciated. Also interested in getting a list of European countries where radar detectors are allowed.

This site used to have a map with all the legal issues regarding radar detectors in Europe. The only thing I find now is this:
http://www.radar-warner.de/html/legal_situation.html

Is it legal to operate radar laser detectors?

In Germany there is a small penalty when you operate a radar / laser detector. When operating the equipment outside Germany in case of getting into closer contact to police you should avoid to be caught.
Otherwise it may happen that you have to pay a considerable amount as a direct penalty.
You will lose your detector as well.

I assume the legal status has changed the last time I checked, they used to be legal

Can anyone offer more information??

In Germany it is allowed to buy a detector and to own one but using te unit is prohibited.
But don't worry, the police doesn't pay that much of attention to radar detectors and also is it possible to hide it in your car. There are many ways.

Radar detectors ara legal to own in Germany, but not in Austria. They're searching for them and you can pay up to 4000€ fine, if you use one.

Using radar locations alarm (POI) in navigation system is prohibited in Germany (not less than 75 euros) and Switzerland (at least 200 euros penalty). Using POI warning system is allowed in Austria, where are all radar detectors prohibited, even owning them.

There is an article with more info about that, but I can't posted. You can find it on page of Austria auto club (öeamtc)

I'd like to know how they can tell. I guess their search and seizure laws are different over there. But I know France has the same law.

In France you are allowed to use GPS based systems. In reality it would be impossible to enforce a ban on them since EVERYONE has a TOMTOM on their windshield.

On the other hand detectors or jammers are quite illegal here. The fines are quite hefty. Speeding tickets are usually around 90€ but a detector fine is 1500€ plus confiscation of the car if it hard mounted. That is why nobody wants to put in a remote system here.

I use my GPS system on the highways where the gendarme are looking for detector users. I use the detector locally where the chance is lower that they are specifically targeting detector users.

A+

I don't live in Germany, so I don't have much experience with the police there, but when I got stopped last year on autobahn for speeding, the policeman looked at the navi on windshield for a moment, but he didn't say anything about showing it to him. I guess, he checked what is shown on the screen.

I was actually very lucky. It was 100 km/h zone (I didn't see the limit sign, because I was passing a truck there, I think). Then I had to break for traffic in front of me and still got busted doing 135 km/h. If there were no traffc, I would flew by radar doing 220 -240 km/h. Ticket was 75€.

The police doesn't know anything about RDs or Jammers!!

This information is wrong. The woman who wrote this article, has absolutely no idea what she wrote. I'm aware of this report too!

Possession, selling, import: Legal
usage and installation: illegal --> up to 4.000€

The same with LJs!
