Thanks a bunchI think that any cobra is a waste of money, and I feel that most of the members of this forum will tell you the same thing

Welcome to the Board!!!

Well Cobras are very cheap made RDs, which leak radar and have poor results, for the price that it is sold for, you might want to consider a Whistler PRO 58 which is a good RD for the price <$100.

Here is a good way of seing the difference of the performance:

SO if you really want to have a good detection and not drive other RD users crazy don't get a Cobra. You will be better off that way.

Also RDs such as RMR like the phazer I/II is a scam so don't even get close to that if you don't want to waste your money.

Good luck,

that was my first RD ever and i would suggest returning it and getting a Bel Vector 940, they are like 50 dollars more then the cobra and really offer quite a bit better RD

Totally agreeing with everyone here. I too was a Cobra user, I had a XRS9700 and now I have an STi. Night and Day comparison.

Go with a cheaper Bel or Whistler if you're on a budget.

I just bought an cobra xrs 9330 and it was on and I was two cars up from a cop at a stop light and it wasnt sensing anything. Everything was on and it was in the proper place... is that normal ?

Well it isn't a cop detector, its a radar detector.

If the cop/LEO didn't have any radar in his car on - this is perfectly normal.

I was under the assumption that all police (im from york region in ontario) could detect if I had a radar detector. And that I would be able to instantly get a reading on my rd If I was in the vicinity of one.... whats the point if it doesnt detect cops ?

The point is to detect radar... aka: The main way LEO's obtain your speed reading.

If the LEO's aren't running radar, they can't get your speed. (Unless they are using laser, pacing, vascar etc etc... some other form of speed monitoring/measuring).

Since your in Canada there is another bit of information that must be remembered... LEO's may only be looking to see if you have a radar detector (via Spectre RDD units)... this means they wont be obtaining your speed... yet they will still pull you over and cite you for use of an illegal radar detector.

Supposedly the xrs 9330 is VG-2 and Spectre 1 undetectable... also what if they are not running radar but happen to see me speeding... I was told that if I do get a reading I should disconnect the power to the rd as soon as possible and slow down. I was also wondering if the mounting position has a big impact on the range of the rd. Thanks.

yes yes yes yes yes...... :D

you need to mount your RD correctly. My favorite place so far is right below the RVM. i would recommend buying something else than a cobra though.

Well since the law enforcement is now up to using the Spectre 3 RDD, that cobra will probably be detected...

LEO's can use their best judgement and pull you over for speeding, as they are trained (in the US anyways) to be able to estimate speeds with a reasonable accuracy.

IE: Going 120 in a 60... is not a good thing.

Also, be careful about slowing down too quickly.

I had a cobra ESD 9110. I got busted with that one up north in Ontario. It was falling apart though. Cheaply made plastic!

The escort is a fine detector as well as the Bell STi. But the STi can't be detected. The best place I have found to mount is up high above RVM.

imo, mounting it just below, would be obvious to see from the side of your car when the LEO pulls up next to you. With the STi mounted so high, it not only gets great distances but if it shows just a little, it looks like another XM Radio. Also if you do decide to go for something like this. Make sure its is put on ALL DARK!

Use your smart cord for the visual alert. This stops the LEO looking in and noticing that there are strange lights activated when he guns you.

me too i just moved mine from below to above the RVM. i notice i have better detection in the city.
