View Full Version : DOES POLICE HAVE TO "CLOCK" YOUR SPEED

I have a question i was wondering if Police had to actually clock your speed to give you a speeding ticket. I know they must have to or radar detectors wouldnt matter. But if someone is going 30+ over the speed limit you sometimes can visually tell they shouldnt be going that fast... So i was wondering if they could pull you over and get you for speeding? I emailed my local PD but they dont like to reply. I contacted the KSP (KENTUCKY STATE POLICE) they didnt reply...

Nope, they don't have to clock you. If they wanted to, they could ticket you based on their visual estimate alone. I doubt if this happens too frequently though...

Each state is different. I had one in Columbia City, IN tell me he didn't have his radar on, but still could write me one for speeding. I don't know if he was full of it or what but since he didn't even give me a written warning, I never worried about it. Probably what helped me was that I was headed to the county courthouse to repair one of their electronic court recorders and I had to be there at a specific time and I was running late. He checked out my story and let me go.

I've been pulled over in Oregon and Washington for speeding without being clocked... multiple times. I have never received a ticket for it, and one instance was pretty extreme speeding... doesn't mean that they couldn't though.

Sadly though, the chances of drivers winning in court probably would not be any better vs. being clocked with Radar/Lidar.
In the end, in most scenarios, the prosecution only needs to prove that there is a 51% chance you were speeding, and the word of the LEO goes a long way in court. :?

Happened to me but was eventually thrown out by the prosecution. Totally BS ticket. The cop did not even have a radar unit in her car.
