Driving fast / radar detectors.

I really like the V1 that i've owned - but i really haven't (yet) come across many cops to actually see how it works, and so i feel i'm driving at risk.
At first i thought they were cool, but at least for me, i have a crappy car, and when i drive 100+MPH i feel like i might break the transmission and cause it to overheat, even though i have a transmission cooler installed. Is driving fast @ 3700-4000RPM for sustained periods (1 hour) bad for an automatic transmission? Having said this, i almost feel that my V1 is useless b/c i can't use it to its max potential.

So i'd just like to know whether 100+MPH @ 3700-4000RPM is bad for an automatic trans & engine on a dodge avenger v6 (a604 trans).

A604's tend to blow up when you look at them at oblique angles :lol:

High-rpm high-speed crusing isn't really that bad. But the accleration up to that speed puts a lot of stress. When you are moving statically at a fixed speed there really isn't any problem.

Keep in mind your detector isn't a "magic pill" that will solve all your "enforcement" difficulties. Only drive fast when you can do so safely, both on a physical side and on the financial side as well.

I agree. I dont do high speeds ~ 90+ when there's too much traffic. But i'm just worried about messing up my car, more than anything. In the city, i almost never pass 2200RPM, and yea, when reaching ~ 90mph i do it slowly.

I also keep reading that several people 'send back' their V1 for repair. I mean, i get some Ka and K readings but i never can see the cop? I really dont know what to think at this point.

Those are generally what are known as "false" alerts. There seems to be a few faults in the V1 false-alert suppression software recently.

Your car has a fairly high-revving smooth V6. There is no danger in revving the motor to 6000r/min on occasion. In fact, running the engine fast occasionally at high throttle (ie heavy acceleration or high speed) is a good thing for the motor as it allows carbon deposits in the combustion chamber to be "burned out" pretty well... back in the day they called that an "Italian Tuneup"...

I have some video of Instant On Ka band my V1 picked up... on my BMW meet's road trip yesterday (saturday 5/21). Have to load in on my computer. you cannot see the cop, but you can see the speed we were running at... 120-145... then BAM, instant on... scurred the poop outta me as i had to drop the camera and tell my friends on the 2way radios to shut it down!

Even at those speeds the V1 picked up the cop in plenty of time...

I need to find the firewire cable so I can transfer the video. I'll post it in the video sections, along with a desciption of what happend. hopefully soon.

wow that is nice -- M3s own :) Mine would redline/overheat/&die at 140mph probably!! When you say 'plenty of time' how far away approximately did it pick him up?

Hey tell me how i should handle this situation:
I'm on the freeway doing say 80 or so...(in the all bogey mode)..and if i hear an X band beep..i usually do nothing...now, i should slow down ANY time i hear a K or Ka, right?

I'd feel like an idiot if i hear a Ka, stomp my breaks, and other people fly by and nothing happend -- this happened several times, but i dont know what happened. I've sent my V1 for an upgrade 2 wks ago..and i've had the 'J' thing come up only once in the city...

I need to find more cops and test my V1 out...its killing me, there's no cops anywhere, lol.

You need to learn where the falses are in your area

Yea i know where the falses are in the city and on the freeways where i go, but the areas where theres no falses, i get some K / Ka and i dunno where its coming from. Is it a false from another car, or maybe an actual cop. Many times i haven't spotted the cop.
SInce i've owned the V1, honestly i hit a cop like 2-3 times, and thats it.
I'd really like to be proud of it but as of yet i just gotta wait untill the right time comes and takes your guys` words on how good it is.

I have the x50 and I pick up a lot of ka alerts from the OTHER side of the freeway. Personally I still slow down, but I don't slam on my breaks unless it gets to almost full tone or POP. Its worked for me ever since I've gotten it, and the only thing i've ever gotten a ticket for (knock on wood) is window tinting on my old car, I had blacked-out limo (10%) tint on both passenger and driver, as well as the rear windshield. Even with the tint, the x50 did VERY well at picking up KA alerts.

In the video I have posted, thats EXACTLY what they do. Even though it wasn't a video of them doing so, thats what they are doing and it is funny to see someone who doesn't have a detector doing 55mph in a 25mph zone.

I've seen this one cop in an area where there are 6-7 sometimes 8 falses, but everything is filtered in the 'L' mode; well, he's been lurking there a few times and been using 'K' band, hidden behind the bushes during rush hour. pretty smart guy, lol.

That's a great example of why the "Bogey Counter" feature of the V1 is useful.

It would read "2" in the above scenario, indicating that there's another source of radar besides the speed sign.

The arrows also would change from the forward one, to both the forward and rear arrow when you passed the sign, with the forward arrow blinking to indicate the greater threat.

i would have to guessimate it was around 3/4 to 1 mile out when I picked up the Ka instant on,... luckily it was at a spot when we were down to 120 mph... had we been going 140+ as we were moments before, it wouldve been mad chaos.. at 120, it would be around 30 seconds to reach the cop, given he was 1 mile away. What kind of distance can the cop actually clock you?

when Ka lights up, slow it DOWN asap.

I ignore X band because I have yet to get hit with it in Missouri.. only local municipalities use K, and that is getting few and far between. mainly Ka is in Missouri.

Speeding at 90+ no detector will hardly save you at those speeds it's obvious that you are breaking the law and any cop doesn't have to be running radar or laser to slap you with a speeding ticket plus at those speeds they will add wreckless driving

You are screwed at those speed if the cop is well hidden with laser gun or just waiting for someone to blow by

V1, BEL, or Passport............ make speeding standard practice and you'll get a ticket. These instruments are only tools. All tools have their limitations. I've had several sitiuations where the V1 gave no warning to instant on. The police here in SE and central Wisconsin are very well trained at radar and laser usage.

God help you if he is using K band POP because you probably will not detect it regardless of what detector you have.

California cops have to have their hazards on (not flashing, but steady signal) otherwise its entrapment according to many cops I have spoken with.

Of course, if he *just* waits for the obvious speeder, then yea, i'm out of luck. But if these detectors can detect from ~ mile or so away, then its relatively decent. I always look for those who are going faster than me and are in front -- so its a 'mini' backup, i guess.

If you are careful about leaving someone out in front of you then you stand a pretty good chance. You'll still have to watch out around curves and hills, though. I've found that detection range, especially with Ka, can be really inconsistent. This weekend I came up on a trooper with someone pulled over and I didn't even get an alert until well after I saw him. He was probably shooting the other direction into the trees but it was disconcerting none-the-less.

You ever drive I-80 in jersey? It's @ 3 lanes here. 65 is the PSL and general law-abiding people in the center lane tend to do 80 as a general average in my area... which means anyone in the passing lane is doing 85-90 if they are moving past the rest of traffic. The people in the right lane doing 65 are either old, out of state, or illegal aliens with no DL.

Plus you always see the people driving 100+ that drive like they're skiing down a mountain full of trees, weaving in and out of people. I know a guy personally who does 100-110 in some crappy '87 olds (on the highway, of course) with a radio shack radar detector... I think he's crazy.

I am thinking at 100+ in a dodge avenger your going to be close to redline, and if you hold that speed for any period of time well I would worry about the engine before the tranny! "kaboom"!!

I was doing 85mph on I-80 in NJ coming home from school! After i looked at my speedo i began to slow down to 75 just as i slow down a blacked out impala goes by me at 90 gets behind the car i was following...My detector is now alerting X-band and he was running it in pulse mode. The impala flips on the strobe lights and the guy was getting pulled over for the 85 range...Then the impala must of notified another cop and sure enough when i was back up at 80 i see a NJ trooper come barelling out of the woods i let off the gas till i was doing 75 then the cop jolts ahead and gets the car that was ahead of me. I-80 is heavily policed from my trips i have taken on that road....
You want speed try the LIE cars are usually around 75-85 and cops don't pull you over unless you have a stand out car if they are patrolling

Mine haven't been so bad. Tend to need a headgasket and timing chain job at 150 000 miles then they're good for another 150 000... Very fun to drive though, especially the turbo. I don't know if I'm ever going to try and pass somebody on the highway in 2nd gear though! :lol:

There is a 1989 Saab 900 SPG model in the US that has 950 000 miles (1.6 million kilometres!!) on it currently. It's in the Saab Club USA magazine IIRC... Although it might have had two engines, 12 transmissions, three bodies and four interiors, 2 suspensions... like the George Washington axe... :lol:
