Anyone have their radar detector OUTSIDE of their car?

I was thinking of making a plastic case the right size of the V1 and then using waterproof silicone (kitchen and bath II) to make it 100% water proof.

THEN run the Concealed Display into the interior of my car.

Anyone think of doing something like this? OR anyone actually DO IT?

btw, i know "laser" would be killed but, im thinking of getting a jammer :)

main reason for this is because i noticed the radar does not work 100% within the interior of my car as the winshield blocks some of the range.

The windshield does NOT have any tint on it, or vynil, plain ol' glass

That would require you mounting the V1 lower which would kill the range and make the rear antenna useless

If I were you I would go with a Detector like the Escort SR7 or BEL RX75 which is ment for external use

It would make the rear antenna useless, and depending where you mounted it, it could make laser scatter impossible to pick up but have a direct shot alert. If you want an exterior RD pick up one of the belscort units, then you could add the laser shifter to the set up, if you are in the market for a jammer.

I was thinking about doing this -- if you mounted it right above the where the windshield meets the hood, you might get some laser hits still, since the V1 kicks butt for laser...

plus since windshield glass cuts down on the laser range, with however it's composed (according to what I've read on valentine's website) you could experiment with different materials to make the case with for better range - like heavy duty plastic or plexi-glass? You'd probably want to tint the top of it tho and just allow the front and rear to be clear .. although if you're too not concerned with rear laser, and to fully hide what you got up there, you could tint the back of it (where the V1s knob and display would be).. because the front of the V1 is black anyway.. so it wouldn't look like anything other than the front of a remote control for a TV showing through the clear plexi-glass... and you'd probably still get some rear laser reception, although not as good as if it was clear..

I'm not good at building stuff, otherwise I'd have done something like this.. plus, if you want to be clever, you can make it removable somehow, so you can take it with you.. just dont want it flying off the car..

Claim it on your insurance and pay the 50 deductible. Sounds like the easiest route.

You may want to install it in a giant spot lamp, remove the lightbulb, insert the radar.....uses the inner reflector to increase sensitivity and reflect more radar waves. However It will increase drag in your car. But it will be Stealth. What LEO will look there for your RD.

all this other stuff sounds........ well.........WOW..., youre reading too far into it..............I can set off my X50 laser sensor with my car stereo remote from outside the car on the other side of the windshield..its not that bad at all

I think that you are negating the fact that if you have a remote unit, ie..Rx75, your radar sensor is going to be mounted considerably lower than it would if you had a regular unit, and to this point, I think that your radar range would be reduced by the low mounting.

true the ability to "See" over hills would be reduced, thats for sure

well Radarbusters has a waterproof cover for the V1, it's about $25.00.

i have the one for the X50 and it works well. stays put regardless of speed.

if you're serious about it, something like this may work, and depending on mount location, some silicone around the bottom where the cords come in and you're done.

i'm inclined to agree with others on the loss of radar range with a low mount though.

if possible i would try and test it before you invest the time and money into doing it.
find a known source and test range with it mounted inside, and then put it outside where you plan on mounting and test it.
on a clear day, i see no problem doing a few runs with it mounted outside a cover.

the 2 main reasons i got a cover ( by the way, the X50 is on my motorcycle) is for protection in case i get caught in some rain, i can leave it on,
and also i painted the cover black, minus the front and rear openings, to "blend " better with my bike.

there is no loss of laser detection either with this cover. still do the jammer though.
