Well here goes the report. I went out hunting CHP's today and here is what I found out!

First, I have been E free for count 'em 2 whole days!!! Second, I was able to find a volunteering CHP trying to hide and knab people with constant KA. Third, I went up and back again 3 times for a total of 6 passess all together. Here is what I found: Everytime the RX65 alerted seconds before the V1 did. The difference was less than .1 miles. But here is the good news for the V1 fans. The V1 stayed alerted a good .5 miles after the RX65 stopped! I was coming up behind the CHP who was running a rear antennea meaning the front antenna picked it up first. Also, he was parked right as the Highway went around a slight bend (turn). The V1 jumped smack dab to 6 then right to 8 as soon as I was coming into view of the CHP which was about .2 miles from where it was parked on the side. So total warning was .3 up to where he was and about .5 after I passed him.

The RX65 alerted first (by about 2-3 seconds) but as soon as I passed it drop it. On the return direction (rear antenna facing away) Both detectors gave .3 mile warning. Still the RX65 alerted slightly first then the V1, but the V1 stayed on for .2 after I passed only because after you passed you went around the bend. Now given the fact that it was a bend .2 in my opinion is still good. Both detectors were ran independently and not at the same time. Also, on a sad note the CHP did get somebody in a RED CORVETTE!!! :twisted: I know picture perfect :lol:

Alright now for grand totals. Coming towards the CHP with the rear ant. ON the Bel gave a .4 mile warning and the V1 gave a .3 mile warning. The RX65 dropped the KA as soon as I passed, the V1 stayed on for .5 past (moving away from the rear ant. ) This was steady for all 3 times in this direction. Coming back (rear ant facing away) the Bel gave a .6 and the V1 gave a .5. Again the Bel dropped as soon as passed and the V1 alerted for .2 miles just as I was going around the curve. Now just to clarify coming back it is a straight highway until the curve. and coming to the bel alerted right as I came around. The V1 alerted no more than .1 miles difference, but stayed on the KA alot longer than the RX65.

I feel that the RX65 is good for alerting to KA first giving its rider more time to get to the PSL. The V1 isn't bad either, but it quickly went from nothing to six LED's just like that then to eight. I am still happy with the V1 just as long as I remain E free I'll be OK. And also NO I WASN'T SPEEDING I WAS GOING 55 which was the PSL!!! :lol:

Oh definately! I may not use it as much as I will my V1, but just incase anything ever happens to it or I have to send it in, OR VR comes out with a much better version, then I will have some back-up protection. But yeah I will definately keep it.

see in my mind i just want to have to v1 mounted on one side of the rear view mirror and the rx65 on the other..i think combined they are the perfect combination..kinda like what the veil guy said on his report if u read it...


they are both top detectors for every category and in some way they always top each other..they should ocmbine to one detector and call it like the Valtronic

one question that comes to mind:

if you were going faster (say 10-15mph over), do you think it's possible the time difference in alerting would've been less? because you would've covered the distance quicker, so while the distance between alerts might have still been the same, the time between would've been shorter. just an observation.

i too have noticed STELLAR performance of the rear antenna on my v1 (3.854)... i just really wish the front antenna would seem to perform as well as the bel!

would you say both alerts would've given you plenty of time to slow down?

He said he was driving 55mph which is 80.666666667 feet per second, times this by 3 (# of seconds) and it = 242 feet

So the RX65 alerted about 242 feet before the V1.

So if you were going 83 mph you would have an extra 2 seconds to slow down with the his RX65 compared to his V1, a noticeable difference.

Problem with your math:

A car travelling at 55mph is travelling @ 242 feet per second, not 80.

55miles travelled in an hour * 5280 feet in a mile = 290400 feet travelled in an hour / 1200 seconds in an hour = 242 feet per second.

If the RX65 alerted 2-3 secs prior to the v1 @ 55mph, that is 484-726 feet before the v1, so yeah, roughly 1/10th of mile as Ace said. At 70mph, a car travels 308 feet per second, which means, assume that both RD's would've alerted at the same distance at the prior speed, it would've alerted probably around 1.5-2 secs prior to the v1. So, lets say for every 10-15mph over the speed limit, the RX65 loses a second of advance warning over the v1.

Does it still alert quicker? Of course.

But, at highway speeds, such as 80-90, is it a big difference?

Of course, I know there is probably a lot of fault in this logic, such as this test result was because of a curve not found at highway speeds of 80-90... but... it was fun doing the math nonetheless :)

Maybe V1 owners should drive everywhere in reverse to take advantage of the extra sensitivity on the rear antenna? :roll:

dont be a smarta$$..the rx65 didnt woop anyones ass..i hope u get instant ond from behind and sit there scratching ur head wondering why u neever got an alert..also i hope u get laserd because chances are if u dont have a v1 u wont pick up skatter or a direct hit..also i hope u get picked off at a usual k band false alert area when a motorcylce officer is sitting their with a handheld radar sniping laughing at radar detectors users who think the K band signal is a standard false

i don't hope any of that because there are v1 users who are just as annoying.

i honestly cant tell that much of a difference between the x50 and the v1, and just about all the test (real world and controlled) show the same.

no one is whooping anyones ass except the top 3 (and the sti sometimes) whipping everyone else's ass.

the rear antenna of the v1 can be beneficial i'm sure, it just hasn't been beneficial to me as of yet.

and the "not as sensitive" front antenna has still given me enough time to slow down.

Alright Everyone,

I did some probably stupid testing between the 65 and the V1 to test the V1's J problems. I turned the V1 on first and let it "warm up" for about a minute with no other radar sources around (i.e. my garage) then I powered up the 65 and held it directly behind the V1. At first it gave me a K band to the rear 6/8 on the strength. Then when I changed it from City to Highway to Autoscan and pressed the button fast the V1 beeped with KA from the rear and sure enough about 2 seconds after it said KA I heard and saw the famous J working correctly. I repeated this about 5 more times and it did the same every time. So I know that the J does work correctly for now. It hasn't yet J'd a CHP which makes me very very happy :D But the E still worries me. Although I have NOT seen it in two whole days so that's great.

Next, while driving in town I was coming up this straight road and was preparing to turn left when all of a sudden the V1 points KA to the REAR and breifly flashed to the sides. So I think to myself " Oh Boy! A CHP coming behind me" I wait and wait and I glanced ahead of me and to the left there was a CHP with a customer. As I turn left the arrows go from the back to the sides then ahead. As I pass the CHP they reverse that order. I was disappointed with the V1 until I realized that possibly the KA signal was probably being reflected behind me (hence the rear alert) then to the side and up past me. It just makes me wonder if its that or that the signal was from the front the whole time but the front antenna is not working.

The CHP had both front and rear antennas on because it was strong both before and after I passed. I'd say a .1 before I first figured out he was ahead not behind and .7 after I passed him. Straight all the way too (the road that is) So what are your guys take on this. Reflected to the rear first or broken front antenna? Thanks in advance!

actually Jamal is right.............because there are 3600 seconds per hour, 60 sec/min X 60 min/hr so thus 60x60 is 3600

so 55MPH IS infact 80.6666 FPS

The guy said he got 3 second earlier warning going 55mph before the V1 alerted.

Go to onlineconversion.com and you will see:
55 mile/hour = 80.666 666 667 foot/second

The guy said 3 seconds at 55mph so you multiple 80.666666667 times 3 and it = 242 feet. This calculates the difference in distance between the 2 detectors according to the poster.

83 mile/hour = 121.733 333 333 foot/second. So this means it takes about 2 seconds to go 242 feet at 83mph. Since the RX65 beat the V1 by 242 feet the V1 would alert 2 seconds after the RX65 if he had been travelling 83 mph because that would be 242 feet.

Sheesh. Touchy crowd.

I don't know how much wider the margin could get than umpteen to zip but anyway I've already said I'm prepared to back down to "remorselessly crushed" Can't say fairer than that.

It kind of seems stupid to be arguing over the merits of a detector I own with someone who's been expecting theirs in two days max for about a week but here goes.

Just about any detector on the market, even the lowliest Cobra, will give you adequate protection on X and K band. The problems are Ka and Laser. You've already acknowledged that the V1 lacks a little something in this area (Ka) and if you had Multanovas you'd be even more worried.

So that leaves Laser. The V1 has it's laser abilities trumpeted endlessly but I would contend that if you relied on the V1 to save you... well you'd be one sorry little fella. What you're looking for with laser is scatter, if it's a real hit you're toast. So what percentage of the V1's laser alerts are from scatter as compared to real alerts and falses. From my experience it's around 5% and if I'm being generous I'd give you 45% real hits and 55% falses(when I asked this question of other people I got a range from 80% falses to 95% falses but like I said I'm being generous). So if you slam on the brakes every time you get a laser alert on the V1 45% of the time you're dead anyway 5% of the time you may be saved and 55% of the time you'll look like a cretin. That may be how you organise your life but it's not good enough for me.

So you buy a jammer and Veil and Lasershield.

And switch off the V1's laser alert and enjoy your drive.

Even better, you put the V1 in a drawer and use it for backup.

And buy a detector that's really good on Ka...

Now I wonder what that could be. :twisted:

I agree with carbonhed on one thing I didn't mean to have such a heated debate over the seconds into mileage (feet) But it is nice to know the specifics when you get to be professional and detailed with RD's. Anyways, I feel that both detectors would have given me just enough time to slow down if I was going say 65. I might be going over even with that. It would be pretty obvious with a front dip and a back rise. When I do come into such a case I will shift into the lowest gear possible without crashing, lightly tap the brakes to aviod the dip, and pull ever so lightly on the emergency brake to get me back down when I am in a rush to get somewhere. Normally I don't speed only when I need to get to the post office before it closes at 5 P.M. :wink: But seriously, I normally don't because I just like having something that makes me happy and drives my family nuts with all the beep'n and brap'n and brap brap'n! :lol:

I've tested my RX65 vs my V1 and I am not so sure the Bel wins even on Ka. On all other bands the V1 beats the Bel and I have video posted to prove this.

However, to be fair I don't have any video of the Bel vs the V1 on Ka. I hope to find some LEO's soon that are running Ka, so I can get some real world tests. I have a feeling it is going to be very close.

Bottom line is, they are both really good RD's, so use the one that fits your needs the best. Either way you won't go wrong!

If the RX65 alerted 2-3 secs (161.333 - 241.999 feet) prior to the v1 @ 55mph, that is 484-726 (NOPE!) feet before the v1, so yeah, roughly 1/10th of mile as Ace said. I said this in my first post, but it was rather long so I will say it again. NO. I put one detector up and then went by the CHP. Then while at the red light waiting to make a U-turn I took that down and put the other one up in the same place as the first one. Same height too. So both had the same level play field as the other.

Well I think it would be nice if there was a way to combine all the favorite features such as friendly user interface, easy to use for the beginner yet fun enough for those of us who are "advanced" and talented. Say for example, the arrows from the V1, the expert mode from the X50, the voice alerts from the 65, and the stelath from the Sti. Combine all of them into one with the strongest detection range from each detector (i.e. the laser from V1, KA from 65, K from X50, and so on) Creating the best detector yet. It wouldn't be perfect but at least a vast majority of us could agree on! SO who is up to the challenge! :lol:

Absouletly,

Because even if you don't get a (for example) K band false as soon as you turn on the other detector. It can still do some pretty nasty internal and unnannounced (no warning) damage to one or both detectors. Such as abliterating (sorry for bad spelling!) the range causing both detectors to not alert to anything even if the souce was smack dab in front of it. OK maybe not that bad but hopefully you get the point.

First Problem: Detectors hate each other - Every superheterodyne receiver—that includes all of today's radar detectors—receives and transmits during normal operation. As you probably know, these detector signals sometimes set off other detectors. Out on the road, other detectors are the most common nuisance signal V1 has to deal with.


What's not so obvious is this. Even if a detector isn't set off by another one, it's internal defense system maybe be affecting its radar sensitivity. This problem compounds when you bring two operating detectors into the same car. Up close, the transmitted signals become much stronger than a normal design would anticipate, and the weak signals that wouldn't bother at normal distances can send the defense system into hyperdrive.

V1 inspects every signal it receives and decides, Is it really radar? Is it maybe radar? Is it not radar. But it isn't designed to operate within a few feet of another detector, and we know of no other detector designed for that high-stress condition either.

Here's the irony: If you put two detectors together and one of them seems sluggish, you might decide that one is inferior. In fact, it may have a superior defense system, and the detector that appears to work better may be a grotesque polluting transmitter.

Why it's a Bad Idea to Run Two Radar Detectors in the Same Vehicle

Just because two detectors don't set each other off doesn't mean that they arent interfering with each other. Here are a few resons why you shouldn't run two together in the same vehicle.



It Could "Fool" the False Alert Filtering

Many people familiar with detectors know that false alerts can sometimes be caused by other detectors operating nearby. What is not so obvious, is during their regular sweep, most detectors are also scanning for other non-police radar frequencies that, if detected, could BLOCK or PREVENT an alert.

Superhetrodyne radar detectors contain "Local Oscillators" (or LO for short). LOs create a radar signal that is utilized to "mix down" the incoming radar signal for detection. Although the LO is only used inside the detector, in many cases because of the design etc the LO is actually "leaked" or "transmitted" from the radar detectors (this is the signal RDDs detect to know if a radar detector is being operated) Many detectors on the road have a 1st LO that operates in the 11-12 GHz range. The problem is, that these LOs also produce "harmonics" at multiples of the LO frequency. So, in once classic example, an LO operating at 11.55 GHz would produce a harmonic at 34.65 GHz.

This poses a problem for detector makers. They need to suppress false alerts from other detectors, while allowing real police radar through. So here's what they do: they take advantage of the fact that if another detector is producing a 3rd harmonic harmonic in the Ka band, the fundamental or 2nd harmonic will also be present. But with police radar, no harmonics with these characteristics would be present, since the fundamental frequency of these is in the Ka band.

So, per the above example, if Ka radar was detected at 34.7 Ghz, the detector would also check the LO fundamental at 11.558 GHz, or the second harmonic at 23.116 Ghz. If one or both of these were present, the detector would know that the Ka radar was a false harmonic from another detector and would suppress the alert. So in addition to looking for police radar, most detectors also look for these LO frequencies or ther second harmonics. If the LO frequency, the 2nd harmonic, or both are present. they can tell that the detected radar signal is not police radar and can suppress the false alerts from other detectors.

So, what if a leaky detector is nearby at the same time as police radar is?

Some of the high-end detectors also put fail-safes in place for this: they will examine the signal levels of the harmonics and the Ka radar. If the Ka signal is much stronger than the harmonic, the detector will alert anyway, just to be safe. This works great, except when another detector is operating in the same vehicle. Because the two detectors are close to each other, if one detector sees a harmonic from another, that harmonic will always be strong compared to any real police radar that is detected.

In some cases, the harmonic doesn't even need to be detected at the same time as the Ka radar for the alert to be suppressed, as long as it falls into a "time window" specified in the detector's software.

The whole thing gets pretty complex:
-there are countless frequency schemes used by different detectors, in addition to the 11.55 GHz example above.
-the oscillators are sweeping
-the oscillators in some detectors will "park" to get a closer look at suspected police radar.


All it takes for one detector to suppress a Ka alert on another is for the wrong frequency from the other detector to be detected at the wrong time.



It might cause a detector to "park" often during it's sweep

Some detectors operate by sweeping quickly to look for police radar, and when they see a signal, they "park" their LO to get a closer look at the signal to see if it is really police radar. With another detector operating in close proximity, it might see leaked oscillator interference from the other detector and "park" on different frequencies in order to get a better look. Even if it determines that it isn't police radar that caused the "park" and suppresses the alert, it will still have the effect of unnecesssarily slowing down the overall sweep, reducing the effectiveness to real police radar. This can be especially critical to POP performance.



It could raise the "noise floor"

With a microwave oscillator operating in close proximity, it likely raises the "noise floor" in different bands. The detectors use singal averaging between multiple sweeps to identify a threat-level signal, so raising the noise floor would have the effect of making it so that a stronger signal would be necessary for the detector to be able to pick out radar signals from the noise.

Even enclosing the detectors in metal isn't going to prevent this, since a lot of the leakage comes from the antenna.



It might be OK on some bands/frequencies but not others, it might work just fine until the sweeps of the two detectors coincide with each other in a certain way. But there's just no way to be sure when it is a problem and when it isn't.

You'll hear some people say that they've done run two together for a long time with no problems, but how do they know for sure?

So bottom line: to be safe, don't run two detectors in the same vehicle, especially if you are comparing performance.

Listen to the way he worded his testing. How did he know that the RX65 alerted seconds before the V1 if they were not running at the same time.

It sounds exactly like he was running them at the same time but he is saying they were not running at the same time so people would not discredit his testing.

I kinda have to agree with Jazzy...That was the first thing that popped into my head when reading his post. That is why I did not comment on it...It seemed safe to say to me that he was running both at the same time based on time differences.

It sucks to hear this but a lot of people on here post fake testing results for reasons unknown. Not saying this one is fake but it is just a fact of this forum....and normally I will be the 1st person to let a new guy know his testing is worthless but I was sick of the drama

people need to read through all the responses before posting. that way, we can avoid the same crap being said over and over, which is very annoying, such as when a 2nd person felt the need to correct my math mistake. if you would've read through the discussion, you would see that he stated a few times he didn't run them together.

And if you would have read all the posts what we are saying is it is not possible to give time differences when running the 2 detectors seperate.

So what we are saying: pretty good chances the guy ran them together but gave his results saying he ran them seperate so no one would discredit him just as Jazzy said

Where did I ever say I hated the V1? :roll: I have said the V1 is not as good at picking up Ka band over hills and around corners then the others....but I have never said I hate the V1...I just don't love it and treat it like gold like you do

I just don't agree with someone's report because their results are what I am looking for. :roll: Although that is what many do. Anyway...let it go...this conversation is over. You agree with the report others don't...GOT IT...

and its entirely possible to give time different. you travel at the same speed to the same point, start a stopwatch when each alerts, stop when you reach it. you can throw in the distance factor to figure the time out.

the results aren't what i was looking for. i would LOVE to see results that say the v1 kicks @$$ in Ka all around. but i would be VERY skeptical to accept any results that say this because i know this isn't the case.

i just take offense that you and jazzy feel the need to call BS on someone who is trying to help us all out. he took time out of his day and schedule to turn around and do the test, why cant we just thank him whether we agree or not and not be dicks about it?

how would you feel if you posted results that you know are real and someone was calling BS on it?

Ok let me be more specific as to why I said the 65 alerted 2-3 seconds before the V1. I looked at the white lines on the road and mentally marked in my head where each detector went off at. The highway has many side streets (near town) that break up the lines into about groups of about 20 white lines before they stopped to allow cross traffic to enter the highway (in the center divider painted in yellow) For example, the Bel alerted on the 7th white line in group 3 from the starting point. The V1 would alert 2-3 seconds later or about 3-4 white lines in the same group of white lines. That is how I figured seconds. I realize that this comes across as being fake, but it is an honest test. I just got excited and didn't think it would be necessary, but apparently it is now. So if you feel that way then by all means go ahead, but for me I know it was real and that is all that really matters.

Listen...the reason we "call BS" on peeps reports is so new guys who are looking at buying a detector doesn't base his/hers decision off of it. We do not want people to get the wrong idea...and yes new people to the world of RD's can be influenced by a single report. We know it is just another report but a lot of new guys think all other reports will be just like the one they seen.

And if I posted results in a manner that looks fishy I would want someone to call me out so I could elaborate on exactly how I did it.

Well then I believe everyone reading this post is owed an apology. I am sorry for misleading everyone into thinking the Bel Pro RX65 is better than the V1, but in my "test" it alerted first. I am sure it would sound more fishy if I was saying the V1 beat the RX65 just because I am a V1 owner and user. Of couse I still use my RX65 in my other vehicle so actually I use both. At least I can say that I have evaluated all top three (V1, RX65, X50) detectors and favor two enough to use them both. The X50 is a great detector too, but I like the features of the RX65 and V1 a little more than the X50.

So once again I am sorry for misleading or potentially misleading new users into thinking that the RX65 is better just because of one test that may not even be considered a test. I feel like not posting anymore results, but I am just going to keep an open mind and watch how I word things in future posts.

All right I understand now I must be more specific when posting testing like that. I think ryansandlin was under that impression of you thinking my test results were BS. But hopefully when he reads this he will understand that I just need to be more specific as to the mileage and timing of when and where each detector gives there warnings. Thanks for making me realize that so now I know!

Here is one point....Aa far as lab numbers I know the V1 is the most sensitive even on Ka band. What I was thinking that this is true yet the off-axis sensitivity was never or could not be tested....So what I am thinking if you run a test in a nice straight flat road the V1 will alert prior to all others but if there is a bend or hill the others seem to alert first.

Basically I was just really disappointed with the Ka performance around corners and over hills with the V1. But I think I have a really good(few) RX65...Ah well V1 sold on ebay with concealed display for 415.00...not too shaby if I say so

I realize that now. I think that I wanted the V1 to do bad so I can have a reason to not use it. I have always liked the RX65, but I love the arrows on the V1. So I will be as specific as I can be from now on. But I have noticed the winning on straight roads and losing with hills and curves (V1 that is) How odd?

And speaking of testing there is a town nearby that uses K band "Your speed is" signs. The first one is on a hill + a curve so this should be interesting! I will have to go test it out and see just how good each detector really is in this scenario. Then after the hill + curve combo there is a curve then it goes straight for some while with another YSI (Your Speed Is) then after that there is one around a curve but facing the opposite side of traffic. And then there is the way back!!! :wink: Well I have some serious testing to do. Granted it's not KA band but still it will hopefully benefit all of us that must worry if K band is a real threat!!!
