I know that all the get what you pay for is true but what would be the best radar detector that you could get at a Target, Wal-Mart, etc... I really can't afford a nice escort or anything like that right now. And out of the best one's what are its capabilities? Like the radius it detects and it effectiveness? My guess is after looking at there websites it is the Cobra 797XRS. Now I know it is not that good but I don't have too much of a choice right now.

Thanks alot,

See if you can find a Whistler SRT-30R. I use it (on a budget...college  ) and it's one of the lower end Whistlers BUT it does good for the price you pay for it. Way better than any cobra and I'm really pleased with mine to be honest.

the budget is under $100 i'm assuming? i'd go for a e795 or a whistler whatever, now the srt-30r must be a factory freak because i had one just for the hell of it for a few days and the thing wouldnt shut up and didnt pick up a speed sign that even my e795 would pick up from 1/2 a mile away  i mean no disrespect to you cooljay , i may of had some f'ed up one i dont know? by the way how do you like your scanner i just picked up the same one a few days ago

For the most part:

Red X50: 300USD
Blue X50: ~340/350USD

 non taken. My SRT-30R might be the odd ball that actually works but I have yet to have it false other than grocery store doors, but that's a given with any RD  and actually have had mine pick up instant on with rabbits ahead of me a good 15 seconds around a curve while on my move  and it seems to have a decent range of pick up for me anyways. Has saved my butt a few times already as you can tell from my signature 8)

As for the scanner I love it 8) I happen to be about 9 miles from a BIG state wide repeater tower so I can pick up the LSP for my area really good and can even pick up the sheriff for my parish pretty good also. Was listening today when the LSP had 2 accidents happen at the same time on the same highway  1 was a 4 car accident and the other was just a 2 car accident. People here can't drive when the roads are wet and it stormed today so 90% of the calls today were accidents.

Hey, not everybody has the funds to get into the high-end stuff... people have bills to pay, kids in school, maybe a wife  , so it's called 'on a limited budget'... we all have to respect each other and NOT making fun of somebody who, for personal reasons, cannot afford the real stuff... thank you

I actually bought that Cobra XRS 797 and It was really crapy. I spent 150 bucks on it, and got a crap detector. The best distance I ever got on it was about 150 feet. Close enough that I could nail the cop that was gunning me with a rock out my window.

GO TO RADIO SHACK/CALL THEM AND GET A BELTRONICS v895 [same as the 955] for 149.99!!! CALL AND CHECK IF THEY HAVE IT, YOU WILL NOT BE DISSIPOINTED!

i'd say got with at least a bel 895, it's onle $149.99 and it's got good Ka range much better than any of the models mentioned above

If you have a radioshack. Go there and get a Beltronics e795<-$79 or for a little more get a Beltronics vector 895.<-$149Both of these RD's are WAY better then the cobras. Cobra is more interested in mass production and marketing than the actuall performance of their units.

If you can find a Whistler Pro 58, I would say go with that. It's a good little detector. The only issue I have with it is the display. Never the less, it's a
fine unit. One of my buddies has one and he really likes it. They run around $95.00

My friend who was the one who introduced me to radar detectors recommended a whistler. When I saw this forum I called him and asked him about bel and escort and all that and told him I was going to get a rx65. He told me that is an excellent choice. He said the reason he recommended whistler to me was because he figured I wouldn't do any research and go to a store to buy one and that means the only two options would be whistler or cobra. He also told me whistler has an advantage over other brands: they are like a brick. If you get a whistler it will most likly work well, work right, and not fail for years. A bel might last 1 or 2 years (hopefully longer) but a whistler will last over 3 years on average without any issues if not way longer. They are sturdy rds that last.

Now this is what he told me. I have not researched it first hand, so that info could be false.

Go to Radio Shack and buy a BEL 895!!!! Its the best bang for your buck radar detector. $200 and great detection range!!!!

Actually the Beltronics 895 is down in price, becuase Radio Shack is no longer going to be carrying them for some reason. It is at 149.99 and probably the best bang for the buck radar detector out there. Its good quality, strong distance, and has everything you need, including pop, voice, etc.

I am thinking the Whistler's XTR-220 Radar Detector or Whistler XTR 280 Which would be better? What are the ranges I am looking at?

cooljay
09-19-2006, 07:46 PM
Well the XTR-220 is run on batteries. The XTR-560 at walmart is showing a price of $128.48 which is just a couple cents more than the 220. I would go with the 560 if you can find one at your local walmart. But I think either would work fine.

Just today on my SRT-30R I got a good K alert while the LEO was behind a big hill. I got my first alert of the LEO about a mile out 8). Not bad for my "Cheap" detector

My first question: Why do you not want to buy from RS... and limit yourself to Bullseye & Wally-World? We are trying to help you and explain that bang-for-your-buck the Clearence sale on the V895 at RadioHut is top-notch.

As for which one is better, I honestly dont know... someone may here, or in the whistler section of the forum.

The ranges... well that depends 100% from alert-to-alert, everyone from what band is being used, and what terrain is present... etc etc, so no concrete range can be given.

hookem202
09-19-2006, 07:56 PM
Go for the bel 895 from RS. Look at all the more experience forum members because they have probably owned alot more RD's and have experience with both sides the Whistler and Bel. Im personally telling you that for $149.99, you cant get a better RD "with a supported warranty" than the Bel 895. You will be able to tell the difference between the two dramatically. GET THE BEL 895 from RS!!!!!!

This I would completely understand... I am sure everyone does... no one would tell him drive 250miles to get an RD on here (well most wouldn't).

The thing is though... he simply doesn't tell us why he will get it from other large-chain stores, but not RS (again if there isn't one near... thats understandable), we are trying the best we can to help him, to spend as little as he can, but still get the protection he needs.

ummm..We are talking about the OP who asked about buying one from a local store (maybe he can't buy one online?) but I would buy one online too but to say that a store does not carry any good detectors is wrong. I bought my Whistler SRT-30R at RS and it works great for what I paid for it

I just bought a bel 980 older model from ebay $80 works great so far. you take a risk but look at there feeddback score and how many sales with 100% good feedback worth a try.who care's dude it's walmart they take return's  it is a good thing.

Besides if you don't have a credit card pay your friend with a credit card cash for the purchase!!!!!!

I personally see spending money on other detector other than BEL 895...POINTLESS!!!!!!! He is better saving his money fpr another detector cause the cheap-os at the be stores will not save him from any tickets and he is better off saving the money to fight the ticket

I am an experience user and just want people to have the best possible detector for their budget

Besides I am never more than 30minutes away from any radio shack.

Go to their site and use the store locator!!!.

X2, the cheapos will only make you wish you'd still had the $80 you spent on them later on for the better model you really want. BEL 895 $149.97 for the win.

Thanks again but I really need to just get one from walmart. It is between Whistler's XTR-220 Radar Detector or Whistler XTR 280 I have my reasons. I belive you all about all the other radar detectors but I really just need to know which is better. Whistler's XTR-220 Radar Detector or Whistler XTR 280? A few of you also say don't get the cordless one, why is that? Which one would you all reccomend?

Whistler cordless units aren't so bad. They run as good as the non cordless, and they have a fancy rechargeable battery. Of course you do need to recharge it now and then...

If you going to get one of those then the whistler xtr-280 = whistler 1788. Just renamed for Wal-Mart to sell it. I personally wouldnt get a whistler bc too many falses plus for 20 more $$ you can have a Bel 895. But the xtr-280 "whistler 1788"is my choice between the two.

cooljay

Warning zombies ahead

I don't understand how you guys can say don't buy a whistler or this or that! If you've never used it or if you have had 1 bad experince with that brand. I use a "Cheap" whistler SRT-30R and it performs GREAT and I have yet to get a ticket and it has picked up every leo before I could even see them and gave me more than enough time to slow down.

So please don't say don't buy this or that unless you've used it before. Also EVERYONE has had a bad experince with one brand or another. I've read about tons of bad things with the V1 but yet people still will say buy it.

If it doesn't work he can take it back and get his money back, if it does work great he has an RD that can at least give him some protection. The "don't expect to be saved" speech is getting old really. I can understand if it was a cheap cobra or something but whistler is a pretty good brand.

EDIT: I have heard and read though that the 1788 does false alot. But I don't have that problem with my whistler is all I am saying. Maybe it's something with the 1788's.

I have yet to have any falses with my whistler other than grocery doors. Even Radar Roy suggests a whistler for the $150 price range:

The top pick for radar detectors in the $150.00 price range!

Ive owned both Whitlers top end units and are not impressed. I can say something, i have owned alot of RD's in my life and know which ones are better. Just trying to save an innocent soul a ticket. One of my room mates today was talking to me about my x50 and told me he was thinking of getting an Phazer II. I was ahh man poor soul is so misleaded, so i told him that they do not work and showed him some videos on here. He could not stop thanking me for showing these vida and saving his money, posssibly a ticket.
