I'd go for the Whistler Pro 58 or Pro 73. Good detectors if your your going to spend between $100 or $200. Good range at a reasonable price.

I would say the Bel 895 or the 955.

x2, The V895 is by far the best detector under 200 dollars, it doesn't have a lot of features, but the key (radar detection), it is absolutly top-notch, darn near Top-3 class in detection.

This only makes it harder for me ...I just seen a 995 on ebay

The beltronics 995,895 and 955 all seem the same to me....
What do I do now ?

DOUG ebay is a No No, Between 995 and the other ones ummm there is a difference, the 995 is really close to the top 3, the other ones not as close, look on google and you can get a good price from an authorized dealer on the 895 or 955. Roy on sells the V995

to date, I've had good luck with a Bel 945... at about $120... not the top three by any stretch... but tolerable... and a few decent saves.

If you can get one of the two recommended above, good on ya.. Or save some money and get a top three model... just stay way from cobra at ANY PRICE.

I was sort of in the same dilemma. Since the 895 is not available in my area, I considered the other best alternatives.

check out these threads:

http://www.radardetector.net/BEL-955-or-995-Oh-no%2C-not-again%21%21-16826t.php

Don't go ebay. Bel and SquareTrade warranties get voided with scratched out serial numbers - testimonials from several others on this forum who've gone this route. Prolly better to just donate to local PD and hope for a reprieve.
Go with either the 955 or 995. Roy doesn't carry the 955. I called them, won't sell it unless they can batch order 30 or so at a time. Available for $180-$200 at other authorized dealers. Roy should be able to get you a good price for the 995 but will probably be just over $200.
Get the 940 if you *have* to stay within $150.

The fact that you are doing some research shows that you are on the right track by asking for expert/field recommendations. Now it's time to listen.

Your best bet would be buy the best Bel detector that you can afford. If you go really cheap on it, you may end up wanting to upgrade and then you will end up spending even more...

I went cheap and regretted it...Mind you, I also live in a banned area, so I went with the STi for stealth.

I would PM Roy, and see what he can do for you. He has excellent service!!!!!

if you can spend $200, try to find someone that works @ best buy that will hook you up w/ their discount. the wholesale price on an x50 is like $180. I did that with my first x50. still covered under warranty and everything, as escort won't know you were "hooked up".

I would advise against that because of the warrenty issues that will follow. If you did find someone that would buy it for you it is unlikly that you can take it to them if something goes wrong and then they go fix it for you.

PM Roy, he'll hook you up and youll get your warrenty.

you'll get the warranty with best buy too. you are buying a brand new unit, right off the shelf, with a registration card and everything. he can't take it back to best buy, but his "source" can, but he still has the warranty with escort. there is no issue here. its the same as buying from roy or any other authorized escort dealer (bb is authorized), just much cheaper.

because i used to work at best buy. after i left, my friend used his discount to get me my first x50. as far as i know, the discount is still the same.

i always encourage buying from Roy. Roy has done so much work for us, with his website, forum, etc- I wouldn't give my money to anyone BUT him (except AntiLaser...or Valentine if they ever come out with a better product)... but you stated your budget. More than I support buying from Roy, I support every person's right to get the best product for the money. If you have a friend or connection at Best Buy that's willing, go for it. If not, I would suggest to ask Roy what his recommendations are. My personal opinion: I wouldn't feel protected with anything BUT a top 3/4.

Hope this helps.

I did go and ask a dude about the discount ...
He told me that it doesnt work woth the escort detectors , something about best buy does not make money from escort, about a dollar a x-50.

It does work because my friend's son got him an X50 at the discount price. However, this same employee also told us they are so strict on employee purchases that it has become the #1 reason for termination. The store management has actually had my friend come in so they could ask him about some of the purchases the son has made on his behalf. As far as I know it's ok to use the discount on immediate family.

So it doesn't suprise me if someone told you they couldn't do it...

i have heard they have gotten a lot stricter. my friend is manager at the local one and even he won't hook me up.

but yeah, best buy does make money off of escorts. gaming systems, on the other hand, they don't... but there is a huge markup on radar detectors. i really doubt that has changed.

so... you've tried that. now, go with roy :)

personally though...i would save my money for another $100 or so and get a top 3.
