Can a cell phone cause a laser alert?

I would think this is a strange question if it wasn't for a couple of episodes that happened to me. I've got a Motorola V180 and was driving last Wednesday when it rang. As soon as I picked it up and answered it, the laser alert on my RX65 went off. I slowed up and didn't see anything so I didn't think anything else about it. The exact same scenario happened again Thursday. The second one occurred about 5 miles from the first. Just an odd coincidence or something else???

Where is your detector mounted....was the alerts during the day? was it a sunny day???

Try to answer the cell phone again see if it happens again...I hold you are using a hand-free set for your phone though

I had the same experience with a cell phone . My friend once got into my car and both time he used is celular my laser alert when off, Coinsidance?

The detector is mounted just above my VA state inspection sticker which means it's about 4-5'' from the bottom of the windshield. It was about 8:15 pm so it was just starting to darken outside. Another funny thing about all of this is that I've never had it happen when I've made calls, just when I received these 2...J

Interaction between electronics devices is quite common. Even in seemingly diverse technologies like RADAR DETECTORS and Cell Phones.

So anything is possible. Moving the 2 units further apart, separating power sources and or grounds and shielding can all help.

The wierdest one I ever experienced with a RD was in my present car with an older detector. On certain occassions it would false like crazy..........every few seconds, became useless of course. I finally by total accident discovered it was my Proximity Car Burglar alarm transciever that was causing it. But Only when I placed anything metallic near the unit. It would then proceed to false the RD. Go figure.

Put your cell antenna next to your radar detector see if it goes off. Mine set off X band. Passport 8500 and Sanyo 4900.

I'm pretty certain that my old TDMA Motorola V60T would occasionally set off a POP alert upon recieving a call. May have just been coincidental, but it seemed to happen quite a bit. I now have a CDMA Nokia 3586i and haven't ever had the problem again.

Similar thing going on here when you hold your cell phone near an amplifier while it's transmitting... you get noise over your speakers.

Different detectors will react differently to different phones, frequencies (850, 900, 1800, 1900 etc) and different network types (TDMA, CDMA, iDEN, GSM).

Yes, this used to happen to my old radar detector. I used to have a Bel 820 and everytime my friend would get in the car with his T-Mobile phone and just point the antenna at the radar detector it went off with a Laser Alert.

Now that I have an X50 and a motorola v710 I have no problems.

I have a Palm TREO, and I do get occassional KU band warnings on my RX65. Nothing on the X50, but then again, it doesnt have KU.

It seems the RX65's KU falses more than anything else, even K band. I dont know why KU falses so much, perhaps it has little/no filtering on that band?

Ku is as easy to detect as X-band that probably why you get the falses...However this is not a common thing(Ku- flases) so either turn Ku off since no police agentcy uses it yet or send detector to BEL for service you might have a problem.

I have Ku enabled on my BEL and I have never ever gotten a Ku false

I just got the TREO 650. Very cool phone. I think i can attribute a false ku on my V1 to the TREO also. It has only happened once, and it was when i had the phone up near the V1. I was using the camcorder feature because oddly enough, I was getting laser alerts from a bug light i had turned on outside. It was cloudy and rainy and from about 30' away i could get the V1 to laser alert when the bug light was on.

I'm guessing the RX65 doesn't have any filtering on ku either. I can get a couple of ku falses a day, then go a week or longer with none, so it can vary.

I used to get Ku alerts on my Bel 550 Euro when I got calls on my Nokia 6100 on the O2 network here in the UK

Yeah, the TREO has a lot of stuff built in. Infrared, bluetooth, internet,etc..

I'm pretty sure the false didn't come from anywhere else, since i live in the boonies, and this was at my house.

Like A 2000 SS in Jersey said, with all the electronics nowadays, anythings posssible.

It also seems on a cloudy day my V1 is a bit more sensitive to Laser also, since i can be more off axis with the tester, when the suns not shining down on the windshield.

Yep. Also noticed that when someone is using a cassette adapter for a portable cd player in their car, my phone causes a loud buzzing. Cheapie computer speakers seem to pick up a lot of garbage too.
