Pulled over, no ticket, with an RD would I have gotten one?

I got pulled over yesterday, the policeman said I was doing 50 in a 35.

Anyway, I was polite, and he was a local cop, so I talked my way out of it, saying I was traveling with traffic and such, and he let me go.

My question is, if I had had a radar detector, do you think he would have given me ticket? Do police decide beforehand that as long as the person is nice, they don't give a tickets? Do radar detectors really stir them up?

I guess my question is, is there ever an instance where is it bad to have a radar detector (other than getting pulled over where they are illegal)?

I would think that most cops view a detector as an intent to speed. I think a cop would be much less likely to let someone off if he knew they had a detector...

That's one great thing about mounting it high with a direct wire cord the cops don't see it.
I use the visor clip wired to ignition accessory.
Although one time I had mine on the windshield at dash level was pulled over for a seat belt ticket and the officer talked about the radar detector the hole time. About if and how they work.

No. Consider yourself lucky. I was totally polite to the officer that pulled me over for 58 in a 35 and he gave me no break at all. When officers put on their lights, its because they are coming to write you a ticket or write you up for some other violation, unless you have a very good excuse or they were suspicious of you, over all I think it depends on the cop, but from what I have experienced, most will write you tickets. As far as the RD, I would have to say that you more than likely would have got written up. A cop would see that and know you are a speeder. Honestly why else would you carry a RD? I wouldnt.

I think the VEIL Guy said that its good to ask the cop to reduce the ticket to a seat belt violation instead of a moving violation. You can also ask the cop to reduce the ticket to a broken head light, or some other bull**** no point offense.

Situation: (not trying to get off topic too much)
I was driving along doing about 8 over and this la county leo pulled up on my right hand side right in my blind spot, I had the tunes going and my windows up (10% limo tint) and i got a ka alert, i slowed down by applying my breaks and the cop went past me. He slowed down and flashed is lights on. I left my detector up in the window right dead center and he had an attitude and gave me a ticket for the window tint, however never did give me a ticket for speeding even though i was doing 52 in a 45. He had his spotlight on as well so maybe he didn't see the rd i don't know. Anyway thats what happened to me.

I've been pulled over my fair share for window tint mostly, and from my experiences and my friend's expereinces have been this: If you're cool with the officer and don't try to mouth off to them or anything like that, they'll usually cut you a break depending on if the last person was an ass to the leo or not. Its like the lottery, you never know if you're going to win big or go home crying.

From my experience and from what friends of the family have been saying (leos) they mostly target the fast looking/modded cars which basically look like they would speed (given) and because they want to look at some of them on the inside. Around here I have yet to see an old clunker get pulled over, even if its a sleeper (modded engine).

Common sense tells most that you are more likely to get a ticket with one. No guarantee, or course.

More than likely, without a RD, you will still get a ticket for speeding. As someone else put it in another forum - It's the cops job to enforce the law as it is written, it's up to the judge to let you off or not based on your defense/excuse. So, unless you got big boobs, blonde hair, and can cry on command, get a RD. I would hide it well so you don't get picked out of a crowd and harassed.

next time the officer lets you go with a warning... before he leaves, ask the cop if he wouldve issued you a warning if he saw a radar detector. he already let you go, so just ask.

I wish I could say I wouldn't have, but I came around a fairly tight corner, with low visibility, cop was using laser I believe, I was only about 300-400 feet from the officer.

It is a road that doesn't seem much traffic, and I have never seen a police officer there, hence I was speeding. The worst part about it is the speed limit used to be 45 mph on the road, then reduced to 35 mph because some old lady complained people were going so fast on the road they were hitting the telephone pole by her house and disrupting the cable TV! There are no marks from cars what so ever on the telephone pole.

Probably depends on the officer. Most are pretty cool. In fact, I saw one of the officers I know (not as a personal friend, but just know him from some local aquaintences) driving around off duty...and he had a radar detector stuck to the windshield.

A buddy of mine with an RD asked an officer for a warning. The officer promptly pointed at the RD and said 'that was your warning.' Take that as you will.

This is one of the many reasons I went with a remote mount detector (RX75 Plus.) I don't have to worry about the officer (or theives) seeing it.

I have some buddies that are cops. I asked them and they said they don't care if somebody has a detector or not. They said they would not base their decision to ticket on that or not. The two biggest factors are the person's driving record and their attitude. If you are polite that helps a lot, and if the driving record is clean you are less likely to get a ticket.

There is no absolute answer to your question. It will depend on the cop. I have been pulled over twice with a RD and got warnings each time. The one time my detector was off, but I think he saw it on the windshield. And I was 18 over too. The RD was a BEL 745 STi, that had this quirk where if it was turned on before starting the car, starting the car would turn it off! The other time (also 18 over) I had two detectors and they were both blaring away when he walked up to the car. I was polite and got no ticket.

At least be polite before you know whether you are going to get a ticket or just a warning. Then after that, if you find out you're getting a ticket, then you can be rude!

I want to start by saying this happened fifteen years ago when I was much dumber than I am now.
I was pulled over for speeding at about 55 in a 35 (I hate to admit it, but I was driving drunk and weaving in and out of traffic - going like a raped ape). I grabbed the RD and tossed it under the seat.
I had pretty much resigned myself to going to jail for DUI, and decided to be honest.
When the Kentwood PO came to my window, he asked me the usual: Do you know why I pulled you over? I said that it was probably for speeding and weaving in and out of traffic. Like I said, I was mentally in handcuffs already.
He asked me if I had a RD ... I laughed and said "Oh, Man, you saw me take that off the dash, didn't you?"
He took my paperwork and was gone for a couple minutes. When he came back, he gave me my ID and asked if I would be willing to slow down for him. I told him I would and he let me go - I could hardly believe my luck.

Really? I remember this cop pulling over somebody i knew because he was driving a clunker, easier to catch is what the cop told him. Also my cousin been pulled over exiting a freeway and same situation, even though she was doing 80 with traffic, she got pulled over because she was exiting the offramp(easier to catch??)


Also I would like to add about getting out of tickets may be an age thing as well. Like I once said I had been pulled over and completely polite to the officer he still wrote me a ticket with no break. I was 21 at the time in a modded chevy nova muscle car, now 22. The same road i got pulled over on another older guy like 65 got pulled over there twice and let go both times, So let me ask some of you, do you think cops will base thing on age as well, Roy? When you pulled people over did you write young people tickets more often than older people? Just curious.

Got a cop who parks next to me....He has a silver bullet....I asked him what's the point if you got the Tin(Badge)??????He does'nt want to do the routine of getting stopped and flashing Badge(Time)..A Hassle :lol: :lol:
