I currently use a Bel 795 and am looking for a new detector, however, I cant spend a lot of money. I have been considering a bel 940 or maybe a whistler pro-58. Any thoughts on which might be the best overall detector?

Well, the Pro-58 costs 106 dollars(shipping included) from Roy, while the 940 costs 150ish (I think). I don't know how they compare against each other, the the Pro-58 is great for the price.

You will be happier with the Bel than with the Whistler...

What is the max that you can spend?

My price range is about $150 and under. I'd love to have an 8500x50 but can spend the money for one.

The Bel 940 is a decent detector. I have also heard that the Whistler Pro 58 and 73 are good as well.

$150 probably isn't enough to find any better, even on ebay.

for the budget it seems the pro58 or 73 or the 940.

If he were really tight on money, isn't the Pro-58 and the Pro-73 the same thing, except for the 73 having some extra features. If the detection is the same, would the features be worth the extra 50 dollars?

yes, you are right 58 less features, but same detection range (so I have been told over and over again. Never actually owned either)

See if you can find a Bel 895 on closeout from Radio Shack. They are identical to the 955 but less expensive. Now that they are on closeout, you should be able to get a great deal on one.

I think so, the Pro73 display alone makes it worth it IMHO...

i myself own a PRO-73 and i think its a great unit for the money. the detection range is worth a 150$.
It has saved me from a

75 in a 60 detected 1.0 mile away.

50 in a 25 detected over half mile away.(Didn't realize it drop from 40 to 25!)

55 in a 40 detected over a half mile away

Whistler 1793SE can be purchased online for ~$100, and it's Whistler's top model. VERY good buy.

I can't speak personally on behalf of the Bel's... only go by what I hear from others on this site.

HUH Whistler's top model is the PRO-73.

HUH? I'm pretty sure the Pro-73 has been discontinued. The 1793SE and Pro-73 share the same exact chassis, have the same exact performance... the differences are that the 1793SE offers MORE features, as well as more control over selecting what features you want active or disabled (at least according to the manuals... cause there are likely unwritten procedures to control all the Pro-73's features). The Pro-73 has a blue display as oppose to the 1793SE's red display.

So why exactly do you think the Pro-73 is the top model?
