View Full Version : Increased chance of being ticketed while using RD?

Hi All,
I would like to buy a radar detector, but I am wondering something. If I would happen to get caught speeding, even when using the detector, is LEO going to be more likely to want to ticket me since I have a RD???
I would just hate to get caught and get a ticket, but have my chances of receiving a warning greatly diminished because I have a radar detector mounted.
Thanks,
-Chantman

That has not been my experience.
Bottom line is you will get more tickets overall without it than you will with it. You have to be sensible and realize that an RD is just a tool and does not give you ticket immunity.
Make your detectable as invisible as possible. Mount it high near or behind the tint strip (if laser is not a threat for you) and it will be virtually invisible to any cop standing at your car window. Use a Smart Cord (BEL) or Remote Display (V1) so they can't see your RD when driving behind you.

From my experience cops will not give youa ticket just because you have an RD.
Once in a great while they'll mention it like, "looks like your hardware didn't help you this time.." or something along those lines, but it's not as bad as you think.
I worried about it at first, but trust me it doesn't make a difference.
I like to shut off my detector before he walks up to the car just out of respect and so that it's less noticeable though.

Some cops will give you a ticket automatically if they see your RD some won't. I have a buddy who's a cop and uses an RD in his own car because he likes gadgets. I've personally gotten a ticket every time I got pulled before I bought the RD (twice) so I'm not worried about not getting a warning anyway.
Not "just because," but you can find many a post on LEO-populated sites where people are saying that the presence of a detector most definitely doesn't help the driver, to put it lightly.

Cops seem to think they don't work very well, at least in my experience. If they only knew how many times the RD has saved my ass they'd be singing a different tune. Nevertheless, I try and put it under the seat when they pull me over, but sometimes I don't. Some have commented on it ... the last time I was pulled over for tint the cop sarcastically mentioned my RD but didn't write me a ticket.

If you know they've alreay seen it, there is really no use in hiding it. Turning it off, yea, or the very least lower the volume. Apparently, they don't really like it when they see you have a RD from afar, then when they come up to you, it's not there.

Chances are yes. However i think that it does not reduce the chance of gettign a warning that much. If you are really worried about this look into getting a remote mounted radar detector. They are more expensive, but will eliminate this fear. Another alternative is to hide your radar detector. Some people stick it in between a cd holder and their visor. The downside to this is that if you hide it well your not going to be able to read the warnings, however, each band has it's own sound so you can still get the same info that you would from the display.

With the RD you should get pulled over.
But if you do, rip it down before he gets close.

I dont think it matters if you have a rd or not.
If you are that worried about about it stay within the speed limit .

That's a good idea (mounting it between visor and cd case. I guess it doesn't matter if it's not as good for laser because once it goes off, you're already caught.
Does mounting it off to the side hurt anything?
Do the detectors ship with extra long wires for high mounting?
Thanks!

I'd venture to say once he is behind you and close enough that he has called in your plates, he will likely observe you doing something like trying to hide something like a detector - or your pipe.

The Valentine1 uses a plain phone cord, so you can buy one at your desired length, or cut and crimp your own.
I don't know about the other top-tier detectors. Search their respective forums and you'll find some good answers.

I had an experience where a cop almost let me go with a warning until he saw the radar detector, then he changed his mind and gave me a ticket. So I always rip mine down when ever I see the cop leave the median.

I DO THE SAME THING OF WHAT FEW TIMES I HAVE BEEN STOPPED. ALSO I HAVE ALSO LEFT IT MOUNTED KIND OF HIDDEN BUT CERTAINLY NOT UP FRONT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WINDSHIELD WHERE EVERYONE CAN SEE IT. IT'S LIKE AN ADVERTISEMENT.
BUT THE WAY I HAVE IT MOUNTED I DON'T THINK THE OFFICER NOTICED IT ANYWAY.
PERSONALLY I WOULDN'T WANT TO ADVERTISE IT BECAUSE IT JUST DOESN'T LOOK GOOD LIKE PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES..THINKING THIS GUYS TRYING TO BEAT US AT OUR OWN GAME...IT SEEMS TO BE OR THE IMPRESSION IS THAT IF YOU USE A RD/LASER D YOU SPEED SO GUILTY BY ASSOC. AND IT ATTRACTS ATTENTION.
I MEAN IT JUST DOESN'T HELP YOU LOOK BETTER WHEN STOPPED. wHY ADVERTISE IT:rolleyes:
HARD FOR ME TO EXPLAIN BUT IT IS LIKE THIS, I SEE ALOT OF CARS ON THE ROADS WITH RADAR DETECTORS SMACKED RIGHT OUT IN FRONT OF THE WINDSHIELD FOR EVERYONE TO SEE AND IT LEGAL TO HAVE IN THIS STATE BUT THESE ARE CARS LIKE ECONOMY CARS, JUNKIE CARS, TRUCKS, SUV'S, CARS THAT COULDN'T GET OUT OF THEIR OWN WAY.
DITTO FOR THE CLUB I SEE ON SOME OF THESE JUNKY CARS-WHO WOULD WANT TO STEAL THAT?:D. YOU WOULD THINK ON A PORSCHE, CORVETTE, MUSTANG BOTH OF THE ABOVE INSTRUMENTS WOULD BE USED MORE OR THIS IS THE STEREOTYPED.
I GOT PULLED OVER BEFORE AT 5:30 AM PITCH DARK OUTSIDE FOR TINT :mad:AND NO FRONT PLATE SO THAT TELLS YOU THE KIND OF LUCK I HAVE. THE CHP OFFICER EVEN HAD ONE OF THOSE LED TINT TESTERS HE USED AND DEMONSTRATED IT TO ME. I THINK IT SAID .33 OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. IF IT'S NOT ONE THING IT'S ANOTHER:mad:

be careful with that. if the LEO sees this he may think you have a gun or drugs. as they are stopping you if they see movement you maybe getting approached by a gun and a very nervous LEO who will definitely give you a ticket for making him search your car for nothing.
I would rather leave it up then attract more attention to me. I don't care how careful you think you are doing it they are trained to see things like this.

I haven't read a single one of you post (in all caps) because it seems like you probably have nothing important to say and it strains my eyeballs too much to even give you the courtesy of reading it.
Its like driving towards me on a two lane road with YOUR BRIGHTS ON.... its just plain annoying.

I cannot (responsibly) afford to get my windows tinted right now and it drives me nuts how many people have misaligned headlights shining in my mirrors all the damn time or they coming towards me on a dark road blinding me. It's one of my biggest pet peeves besides other traffic in general.

Maybe maybe not. Cops are just like other people -- i.e. they don't all behave in exactly the same manner as each other.

Here's how I see it:
My RD does a good enough job to detect all radar, so if I hear it set off, I'm slowing down and assuming I'm not getting pulled over. Then for about the next 5 miles, I'll drive the PSL in case I'm being paced from behind.
If I get hit by laser and I'm going over 5MPH, I'll take the RD off immediately and keep driving. This way, when pulled over (since it isn't really a laser detector), the cop won't have any idea of my RD in the first place.

I believe it is a huge chances of getting ticket because of using RD because I can see that LEOs thinking that your using it to get away with it. I was just literally almost busted yesterday (I posted a thread on it yesterday) and took down my RD before he could see it and it's hardwired too.

Its one of my peeves as well. It seems its always the drivers side light pointing in your face, perhaps on purpose.
I installed some driving lights on a rocker switch to turn on for gigging these people with. Helps on the backroads here too. We dont have many streetlights here.

I agree with this and I can tell you I asked the same questions myself. The best thing to do is a stealthy install. Don't let the LEO see it, and he won't know to be any harder with you.

I agree and also do this but you must be careful. Put yourself in the LEO's position he may think you are going for a weapon or hiding something but it will bring unwanted attention to you if you aren't able to do this discretly.

Yes, yes, yes! All the cops I have talked to (both local and state) have said they are far less likely to give warnings if they see the driver have a RD. That was the main reason I waited so long to get an RD. But you can always stealth mount and hardwire your RD like I did. Then cops would never know you have a RD.

Case Closed.
I really don't see how Cops would give warning to someone who has a RD. It's just the way it is. It's got to be like 1% of Officers will give warning instead of ticket at say like 5 mph over. It has to be.

Put yourself in the cops shoes for a minute. If you pulled a guy for speeding and saw a detector in the car you would probably think there was intent. Maybe a break if its in the open and plugged into the lighter.(probably no break tho depending on attitude)If I saw a guy with a hardwired detector I would KNOW he is a speeder and is trying to be stealth about it. That would be a ticket for sure. He is a player and is therefore fair game. So you would likely go ahead and cite the guy knowing that he got away with it plenty before and you just got him. It is a cat & mouse game. Sometimes we get caught.
