View Full Version : Aluminum enclosures
Has anyone tried out of one those supposed weatherproof enclosures for a RD? I've seen them on some other web sites and was considering getting one for my V1. I was thinking of mounting it in my roof rack thus keeping my V1 out of sight completely w/o losing rear detection.
Any thoughts??

Sounds like a sweet idea, but i would be worried about heat durring the summer time. Also i think you would have to make the container our of something besides metal since metal would hinder radar detection.
Well according to the website, the front and rear would consist of polycarbonate plates; which are transparent to radar and laser.

how do you get it wired to the cabin?
truthfully I don't think your performance would change that much. and it certainly would not be great enough to out way the risk of losing your RD to a faulty seal.

This is something I contemplated a while ago. See, I had one of my Saabs with the original plastic accessory sunroof "visor" thingy. Right about perfectly sized to swallow a V1. Weatherproof the unit, stick it in, run the wires straight into the sunroof and then on the headliner, down the A-pillar, into the dash, out of where the gauges are, and just plug in the remote display right there. Presto - mounted high and invisible to certain people I'd rather not know about it.

I would worry about how much hotter the V1 would get in the box and how safe it would be from moisture.
well I can understand the question of the heat. But the website suggests to stick the box in the front of the car behind the grille, also in front of the radiator. With the heat from the radiator and the box still subjected to moisture. Could it be that different?? Yeah I realize I'd have to run the cable somewhere.
Like I started though.... just a thought.

If it was outside the car on the roof rack wouldn't that make it that much more appealing for somebody to steal? It is right there just crack the case open and walk away, they wouldn't even have to go through the effort of breaking your window.

regardless of where it is, the metal box will compound the heat issue, not only is it out and exposed to the sun, the V1, as with any other detector, gives off heat........ so in essence its two kinds of bad, just leave it inside the cozy climate controled cabin, thats my thought on this

i think it could be done without to much worry. just make sure you seal the area around the enclosure where the power cord attaches in to keep out the elements. if you are that worried about head you could always take an old cpu fan and mount it on top of the enclosure. shouldn't be to hard to wire either.
if that sounds like too much you should just get one of those stealth visor mounts.
