Knowing your local radar band....?

Also, wondering if POP is used in my area?

Chicago: Ka, Laser (NEW-PL III), Redlight Enforcement (inductive loop), X (traffic density monitoring). Should I just assume upgrading to the lastest V1 version my best alternative? It looks as if I need them all.

Also, what is LIDAR? What is VASCAR? What is KU?

RazAny good detector will work for you. V1, X50, RX65, STi, etc.

For Chicago, Ka and Laser are the things to worry about when it comes to speed enforcement. Red-light cameras use inductive loops (coils embedded in the pavement), so a detector won't help you there, just try to avoid running red lights if you know there's a camera there. X band is used to analyze traffic patterns (to identify congestion), so X isn't a threat for speed enforcement according to the Chicago posting (other areas may use X for speed enforcement though).

LIDAR = LIght Distance and Ranging, the official name for laser speed enforcement technology.

VASCAR = Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder. Basically a fancy stopwatch. An officer times the amount of time it takes you to cross two points of reference a known distance apart, and the measured time is used to calculate your speed. Since no signal is sent out, VASCAR can't be detected by a radar detector. VASCAR can be done from the ground or from the air (plane or helicopter).

Currently I own the V1 which I bought back in early 03' It has not been upgraded and I'll have to check to see which version it is.

I'm worried that if I upgrade to the latest, I'm introducing new problems but maybe not?
