This correspondence is from the respected site/company of pbelectronics.com. I was hoping for a more "detailed" response but I am sure, due to confidentiality issues, he could not be more specific. (I do not know if FL or NC do or do not use xband radar...but this what was said!) I had correspondence with this company before (and actually did business once) and they are very professional!

How many xband guns do you sell to police departments….and do you know what areas (I know Ohio and NJ do!) still use xband?

Frankly, i know there is X-band used in Texas but i have had my X-band off for the past two years and have no complaints. I do have to say if i lived in the dallas-fort worth area i would turn it on. I have heard of x-band flaoting around that area.

Well i live halfway between Dallas and Houston on I45. My girl friend and I traveled through dallas on our way to Six Flags in Arlinigton and encountered some constant-on x-band by a sheriff. I dont remember the exact county.

316.1906 Radar speed-measuring devices; evidence, admissibility.--



Part 2 F says

(2) Evidence of the speed of a vehicle measured by any radar speed-measuring device shall be inadmissible in any proceeding with respect to an alleged violation of provisions of law regulating the lawful speed of vehicles, unless such evidence of speed is obtained by an officer who:

(f) Is using a radar unit which meets the minimum design criteria for such units established by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.


The law doesn't specify the details, but if you look at the DHSMV minimum design criteria, which was published Volume 30, Number 5, January 30, 2004 in the Florida Administrative Weekly, 15B-2.0082 Minimum Design Criteria for Radar Units has a part (2) that says

(2) All radar units used in this State on or after January 1,
1995, shall be designed to operate in one or both of the
following frequency ranges as assigned by the Federal
Communication Commission for operation of Doppler radar
radiolocation units.
24.050 – 24.250 GHz (K – Band) (Common
33.400 – 36.000 GHz (Ka – Band) Referrals)
The radar must have a doppler audio operating in the range 300
Hz to 4.0 KHz.

I'm not a lawyer, so this isn't legal advice, but it seems to me that LEO's could use X-band all day long, pull you over, and write you tickets. You could go to court, plead guilty or plead innocent and be found guilty *IF* you or your lawyer didn't know about this, and use it to have the radar reading tossed out.

I haven't seen X-band units on the state buying contract price list, and I doubt you'd run into them in any agency that keeps their equipment current and up to date.(like the FHP or one of the large cities) A smaller agency with less funding *might* still have an old unit in service :?:

Well, I just gotten home from a trip to Madison Wisconsin. Got hit with X band in Orangeville, IL again. Village car with the old CMI Magnum still on the dash.

Dane county, Lidar and City of Madison K band Kustom Eagle series. UW Hospital had a unmarked car there, also a Kustom Golden Eagle sitting on the dash.

So there is X band a live in the area.

Hey Veri, I just made a run from Houston to Brownsville and back and had no X band alerts from a leo. I can tell you that Brownsville and Port Isabel police use Ka band a lot. Got pulled over by a Port Isabel officer one night using Ka.

just try driving down in the southeastern part of ohio.. i drove from athens ohio up to akron, and on 50/32 and I77 X band is the primary trooper radar. was hit 6 times on a single 3 hour drive, and 5/6 were all IO Xband from the state patrol. alive? no its thriving down here so if your ever driving through ohio, just beware.

I'm just curious here but, why is X band being phased out for speed measuring devices? It seems to measure speed as well as K or ka, or am I wrong on that. Or, is it a case of so many other devices cluttering up the bandwidth in the X range? I know its easier to detect but I doubt that would be the main reason.

Hello,

X band has a very wide signal as it gets away from the gun. Plus the size of the antenna horn. K band has about the same range and has a horn that is about 1/2 the size of X. Which would you like mounted on your dash?
