I am from eastern North Carolina, and I am preparing to purchase my first radar detector. I was wondering if anyone knew which bands were most frequently used on I-95 as well as highway 64/264 (Raleigh to Greenvile). Any feedback would be appreciated.

I've notice radar traffic enforcement has gotten a lot stronger here lately. If your traveling on Hwy 49 on the long stretch from Charlotte to Concord, be careful. County Sheriffs ( Brown Crown Vicks ) are using K band all up and down this stretch. Some times they use " Instant On " some times they use constant. Just be aware that their out there and some are unmarked.

True, X and KA are used in Charlotte by State Highway Patrol.
K is used by county Sheriffs. I've just recently found out our City
Leo's aquired a few KA guns and verifyed it yesterday by being hit.
I haven't ran into Laser yet but have heard they have it in Raleigh.

Orbital is right about Laser in Raleigh. I think so far its use has been limited to construction workzones. Last week a friend with NCSHP was in Raleigh getting trained/certified on the Pro Laser III so beware it will slowly be making its way to other parts of the State.
Last week when he was in town he called and told me they were out on the Rock Quarry Rd. overpass shooting Laser on I-40 traffic for practice. I was about 10 minutes away and hauled a$$ to get a few Laser hits in on my 8500 just for fun...wouldn't you know it, by the time I got to the area the rain started!!!! All 15-20 Troopers ran back to their cars for rain protection! I went to the next exit to turn around and by the time I got back they were driving back to the Training center. So I missed out!
Some things he quickly mentioned: Target only within 1000', shoot for front plate or lights, never shoot the windshield, and darker cars as opposed to light/metallic cars are harder to get. I already knew all that due to this great forum!!!
If I hear any more, I will be sure to post it here! Oh, anybody in the Northeast part of NC may want to look at getting some countermeasures in place...but you didn't here it from me!!!

x,k,ka is used out here on these tobbacco roads from Zebulon to Wake Forest. 264 and 64 I have experienced K and Ka.
Youngsville uses a lot of X band.

John I go through Youngsville twice a day...their constant on X-band, even when they have the cars parked, makes me smile every time!
Careful the Youngsville PD now have a Dodge Charger in their fleet!
Also, the Rolesville LEO's are running K-band with front and rear antennas, so be careful going from the 55mph to 35mph area on Rolesville Rd. They like to sit on the side of the road and run the rear antenna to catch you not slowing down in time!

yep know what you mean. When I drive out to get on 96 I have gone straight at the fork to see how far I can pick them up.
No matter if they are pointed north or south in front of the station I cant seem to get them beyond that little hill and when taking the curve onto 96 I cant seem to pick them up more then 1/2 way around the turn.
The V1 is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, will compare the two on my ride home for sure.

I'm in Lincoln County, Lake Norman area. I drive 1000 miles a week now, W-S, G-boro, Raleigh, Rocky Mount. My trusty old Escort original has done me well for a long time but I'm passing a lot of SHP cars with front/rear radar and getting no alerts. Just bought a Bel Vector 945, $100 to my door. I know it still leaves a lot to be desired but it'll be better than the old Escort. I'll upgrade again one of these days. Besides, I get paid by the hour so I don't have to go real fast, make more money going the speed limit!

I live in Rutherford country and commute to Hendersonville every day for work (about a 90 mile round trip). On US 74 there is always a HP hidden behind the bridge near the Union Road exit. They too have Dodge Chargers waiting in the center median on occasions.
The other speed trap I've noticed is on the Saluda Grade on I 26. I would say 3 out of the 5 days I come home from work, a cop is waiting near the bottom of the grade to catch people not putting their brakes on!
There is also a section of that road which runs from 65 to 55mph on another grade. The cops like to hide away and hit you there on the bottom of the hill too.
I also travel to Charlotte once a week and the most obvious speed trap is in Shelby. It runs from 65 to 55 then to 45. I made my first trip with the detector their tonight and I was suprised at what I picked up. One cop in the Mcdonalds hitting people driving past (K band).
On the way back I got hit by a cop waiting in a closed truck stop. I am not sure where it is, but it was between the Charlotte/Douglas airport exit and the Kings Mountain/Shelby exit. It was the only truck stop we passed, so for those familiar with the area, it should be easy to identify.
I hope this helps some of you out - sorry if I'm a bit vague on locations, I haven't been living here that long!

I live in Wake Forest (near Raleigh) and I have noticed that US-1 has been littered with cops recently more toward the area around the new bypass. Speaking of the new bypass, it's almost stupid to get above 55 mph cause cops are sitting at every intersection or along to tree line at night.
DMO1028 I know what you mean about the new Chargers, it scared the hell out of me when I stopped at the subway in Youngsville.

Another heads up, SHP has a new paint scheme for their marked cars. They are to be silver on black instead of the old black on silver. I imagine that's to make them harder to spot.

Carolina 5-0 great pictures! Yeah that blue Charger would sneak up on you if you're not careful-
I actually saw a SHP car with the new paint scheme sitting at a light across the intersection from me one day here in Raleigh and at just a glance I swear I thought it was a car for some random security company....Until I looked a little closer! It caught me off guard for sure. It actually looks really good in person. This car also had a big bull-bar on the front too.
Chapman89 I wonder if Youngsville got the HEMI for thier 25-35mph speed limits!?!?! :D

I'm new here and I hope they don't mind posting a few photos or related but non-competing web sites. You can check out http://www.policecararchives.org/ for photos of a lot of current police car photos. I contribute NC departments there as I can and I'm sure they would appreciate anyone else contributions. There are still quite a few NC & SC departments not represented.

I don't know if the Youngsville Charger has the hemi but it still looks pretty mean as it is currently. Actually as I was coming down capital tonite after work the sneaky cop was right behind me and it scared the hell outta me seeing that Chager.
Just for my knowledge I tend to travel to VA often for business can a cop tell if I have a radar detector turned on even if I have it sitting on the center console of my vehicle?
John_in_NC
06-12-2007, 02:52 PM
I like that new look of the SHP except for that sawtooth sticker on the rear bumper.
The Charger in Youngsville is NOT a SRT Hemi. I thought it made a great looking and quite intimidating unmarked until they painted the doors white.
Carolina 5-O
06-12-2007, 03:01 PM
I agree, that bumper sticker needs to go. If they needed reflective tape on the rear bumper it should have been 3M black that reflects gold.

John- I thought the same thing about the white door on the Youngsville car....that's probably how they got it, maybe a factory mess up and they bought it cheap?? Haven't seen it lately, have you? I just hope they don't get it equipped with Ka and learn how to use Instant On!! I kinda like their constant on X-band!!
Chapman89- Not sure about the answer to your question regarding the detection capabilities of the "radar detector detectors" while your X50 is down on your center console. Might want to post that in the "General" section and get a few of the resident experts in on that! Just be careful in Va. until you know for sure!!

Well I just got back from a trip to Charlotte for college this fall. I rode with my father down and I swear his radar detector went off quite often the minute we hit I-85 south. However, when we would pass state trooper vehicles half the time they were unoccupied. This goes to show that the new plan is effect near Concord, Charlotte, etc... I need to research more hot spots in Charlotte since I'll be living there this fall, I don't want some stupid ticket for going less then 10 over b/c I didn't know some cop happened to sit at a given location all the time.

Chapman congrats on attending UNCC this fall (assuming it is UNCC you were talking about)...I'm a UNCC graduate! Civil Engineering major... class of 1995. Holy crap I'm getting old! You'll enjoy Charlotte, the only problem when I attended was it was known as a "suitcase" college meaning everybody went home or elsewhere for the weekends. Because of that, Thursdays were always the big party night. OH yeah one bit of advice, respect the girls...more than likely one will be your wife one day, ask me how I know!!
I was in Charlotte over Memorial Day weekend and SHP did have a lot of empty cars being used as decoys. I'm between Raleigh and Charlotte quite a bit and during any ordinary time of the year, the empty car trick is rarely used.
Driving I-85 South you will notice a lot of x-band alerts around all the interchanges. This is due to a device that helps detect vehicles on the overpasses to control the traffic signals. The regular detector loops that are usually cut into the asphalt to detect traffic are not cut into the concrete bridge decks, so NCDOT mounts a detector unit to a wooden pole that just happens to emit a x-band signal. Yeah it is a pain, but you will learn where these are once you make a trip or two. Just a FYI, I mostly encounter Ka along the Raleigh to Charlotte route, my experience is that x-band is very rare along I-85/I-40 segment. Might want to try City or Lo-X...but be sure to keep x-band activated because it is alive and well in NC!!
Also be careful along the Greensboro by-pass...lots of Ka used in this area and they are really good with "Instant On" especially after dark. They hide without lights on and by the time you see them you are toast...so unless you have your 8500 running with a rabbit out front used as bait do not speed through this area! Also, once you get close to Charlotte in the Salisbury area, watch for the painted lines after every interchange because they sit on the on-ramps running VASCAR too. Probably rare, but trust me they will use VASCAR.

I agree with you on the Greensboro by-pass! I go through there 4 times a week and it's rare that I don't see someone stopped, even rarer that I see no SHP or Guilford County patrols.
Beware also of I-85 around Davidson & Randolph Counties (100 mile marker area). Davidson SO, Lexington City and Archdale City burn up that section!
Ka huh? No wonder my old Escort original never makes a sound through there! Should have my Bel any day now.

dmo1028: Thanks, and yes I am attending UNC-C this fall in the Science and Arts college to major in PreBio/ Pre-Dental. I'm also aware of the college being very big with commuters. To help me against the thursday parties I only have one class one friday, Bio-Lab, it doesn't start till noon. I feel quite satified with my overall schedule though, mostly morning classes that have my day over with by 11 or 12.
Anyways, I made a trip to Busch Gardens today, there were so many people pulled over along the way, almost seemed like every 10-15 miles. Not to mention alot of constuction going on at night along the way home leaving from the area. All in all it was a fun trip, no cop issues.

Dave, Youngsville term for constant on is to leave the unit on in the car 24 hrs a day. :-)
Do you know a good place in Wake Forest where I can find Ka radar?
I want to do another test against WF PD, this time something a bit more open to determine range and angles.

John you are right about the 24/7 radar in Youngsville!! Today they had a car in the Sheetz parking lot out next to Holden Rd. parked towards downtown Yville with radar on. So I made a few runs towards it with the Pro78. Hmmm...well I wasn't astounded by any means. Granted coming towards US-1 in the area there is a slight curve and hill just before you see the Sheetz sign. The best distance I got was .3 miles. With the hill and curve I guess you could call it worst case? Don't get me wrong, I would have had plenty of time to react before I saw the car but I wish it would have been a little better.
WFPD is not very predictable...I encountered two of them today on the 98-bypass (on seperate occasions) and they didn't target anyone!! Other days they get cramps in their radar trigger finger! I also passed a WF cop today on US-1 and nothing! Catching them in the open with radar on is going to be challenging to say the least.

^^^ I was actually at sheetz tonite around 12ish, those two cops cars (one trunk, one car) still trip me out sometimes. I can't say I've ever picked up a radar band coming from them. I only notice it when there are actually cops at Sheetz and not those empty cars.

On my way to Rocky Mount I went around Greensboro on I-85 about 7:30 this morning (the "by-pass") and was promptly nailed with Ka by a silver Tahoe up on a bank at the 421 interchange. Don't know if he was G-boro PD or SHP, probably GPD. Chapman as far as I know the car and truck are just decoys...did you notice the dummy sitting in the seat of the car?!?! Yesterday when I got the x-band alerts there were 2 on duty Youngsville cops sitting outside at a picnic table sipping coffee in the 96 degree weather :? and of course they left the radar unit running.

Carolina 5-0 it very well could've been SHP. I saw a SHP Tahoe in Wake Forest Saturday with a car pulled over. It was fully marked though.

Saw this new '07 Tahoe parked at the station in Hudson/Hwy321N today. Also had a black unmarked one pass me on I-40 mile 125. It wasn't running radar but it looked just like hundreds of other new black Tahoe's. Both were running SHP-### plates though. Welcome to the forum!! Yeah NC aquiring Laser does suck. Be carefull because I know they have it in Greensboro because of a news story back around July 4th. They were using it out on the I-85 bypass.
A couple of months ago a source told me that the SHP is training Troopers from all over the State in hopes of getting a Laser gun in all the Troops. So if Winston doesn't have it yet, it is only a matter of time.

This morning I was going to work and down the lame road that is rated 35 but easily can support traffic going 55 no problem there was a LEO parked on the side with his hazards on and his cherries but no one was pulled over or anything... :? Constant K for a good distance on that.
No laser alerts just yet, only been picking up K and Ka alerts around Charlotte / Union County / Huntersville.
How often do you NCers get an LEO running X band radar? I want to disable it but not at the price of a ticket. ;)

yes, X hits even going on I-40 from Wilmington to Raleigh!
BTW, I found some old laws in NC that have not been repealed.
Are we all law abiding?

I've found the forum after getting my first (and hopefully last) ticket between Hickory and Statesville on I-40. I was curious if anyone would be able to tell me what I was ticketed with, the only thing I can see on the ticket that would be useful is the speed box which has the following: L 79 S I assume that means it was laser?
If that's the case then I will look at getting a jammer to help the daily drive, and if not I should be able to get by with my new 9500i :D but now that I have an RD I seem to speed a little more
Also, thanks for all the info for NC, that's crazy that they go and make that info public (the newscast) about the new Laser guns, for the people on here that makes it easier to prepare/avoid. I'll post any info that's helpful when I see/find it.

Welcome aboard! You may want to make an additional post in the "Beating Your Ticket" section of the forums as there are many knowledgeable people that sift through there. After you make the post there about your ticket I'll be glad to help you with that part of your "new experiences." ;)
As for the 9500i, it is a good detector but you have to know that ANY detector (even the V1) is not a reliable countermeasure for Laser. Your only hope is that your detector will alert you from IR splash off another vehicle or your own (hopefully the officer can't target you well) and you have enough time (like in the milliseconds) to react and get your speed down.
Jammers are definitely the way to go for an active laser countermeasures but it's never a bad idea to go with the more passive countermeasures like the LaserShield and Veil coating. Every little bit helps, every millisecond could be the difference between a ticket. ;)
Anyways, as you may have read here it seems that NC is upgrading laser as of late. It makes sense and I'm sure you'll see it in the more urban areas before the rural places (although equally possible as many small towns use tickets as a huge source of revenue).
I'm in the Charlotte/Union County/Huntersville area for the most part between work, school, and visiting relatives. I've noticed that Charlotte and Huntersville like K/Ka but have yet to really see any real X band threats here. Union County appears to be using K and getting some Ka guns (saw a few shooting in small neighborhoods that no one would be speeding in, probably practice).

In regards to my previous post asking about what I was clocked with, I was wanting to mention that I've started noticing the SHP may be using laser more between Statesville and Hickory on I-140.
What makes me think this is that I get an alert on every 1-2 (out of 3-4) SHP vehicles that I pass, while the others don't trigger my detector at all, yet I have confirmed that they are occupied. I remember Orbital mentioning that it might be time to get some anti Laser gear since it has been confirmed that the SHP has laser, and I'm starting to think the same thing. I'm going to look at some Veil for now since I can't afford a laser jammer (darn college  ) but does anyone driving in NC have a recommendation for a lammer?
Is anyone driving NC right now with a jammer that can share any experience(s) or suggestions/recommendations with us?

Portman,
Were the NCSHP you passed moving?
Reason I ask is because Laser can't be used
accurately while moving. The Leo will have to
have it Stationary with a steady hand or tripod.
As far as a Jammer goes, I asked the same question
a while back and got some really good feed back.

Orbital, they were stationary each time. I have seen them at least twice at the top of an onramp, and the most recent time the car was hiding up in the trees/shrubs at a rest stop.

I live near Rocky Mount and I drive all over the state. I can count the number of times Ive been hit with laser on my fingers. I put about 6000 miles a month on my vehicle for work, this in is NC and VA. KA is big for the NCHP around my area. The locals use K mainly and sparsely X. I was meeting a new black Tahoe and was hit with IO KA, he's been hot around my rural area lately.
On 64 near Nashville Ive seen a unmarked Grand Am pull someone over. Also a unmarked Camaro. The new trooper cars are hard to spot in a distance. Rocky Mount police mainly uses K and the Nash county sheriff uses K and some IO KA. The Sheriff has a marked Charger which is white and gold. Rocky Mount PD had a unmarked Blue Charger running IO KA.
Also I know a guy thats a trooper and he said they recently spent alot on the new KA IO equipment. That was a while back

I doubt we'll ever get KU band when Laser is more

seeing more Laser used in NC. To me that seems
the next logical step for law enforcement.

Nov. 12th-25th is North Carolina Governor's "No Need To Speed week" (the Holiday increased enforcement more-or-less) -- I know Wilmington is participating.
Expect the local cops to dust off their Laser guns and to setup more Ka IO traps in secluded places on back roads. Wilmington cops -- when they actually breakout the laser guns -- have been known to be disguise themselves, like dressing up as golfers.

I'm with ya guys... hence the need to finally upgrade detectors on my part... pretty sad when you can run ol school X and K's and get away with it! Them days' though like Orbital mentions.. I think are over.
Lidar and Ka is the thing now it seems.
I believe 35.5 KA has shown up quite a bit here in the Triangle area.. at least that's what I've been noticing on from what the X-50 has been reporting to me (I like that mode!! it's kinda cool).
I do know Sanford kitty's run the Golden Eagle K and Ka (dual freq) unit (front/back). Their tactic though is taggin ya from behind. They like to mix in with traffic and hit the instant on Ka. Or they'll just sit with C/O Ka.
All my trooper alerts within the last couple weeks have been all constant on Ka.
I might head to Winston-Salem today (it's now 5:10 a.m.) to set up a deer stand on family property.. so I'll see how the V1 does goin thru G-boro to Kernersville/W-S... I have a feelin it might be a bit talkative thru there. Lot's of speed sensors along the highway (I-40W)
Oh, by the way, Orbital,, I do like the X-50 now having run it for a little while. Your right, it's relatively quiet. V1 is definately a bit talkative, but not too bad for my area... I bet it'd be nuts around Charlotte!
Orbital75
11-12-2007, 10:58 AM
Yeah, the X50 is a great quiet unit and I've been very pleased with
it until the 35.5 came around the area. I've been wanting to try
out a V1 since this 35.5 popped up, but your probably right, a V1
would be very chatty in Charlotte. We have all kinds of things that
make detectors scream out. I may have to think about this or I could
use the 30 day trial they give....
I hear your planning on driving down to Winston-Salem... Well, your
X50 is going to chat a little, there are a ton of those Drones on I-40.
Not sure how their programed but they have to be on some 2 or
3 second " Instant On " mode. The X50 will try to filter it but
when your dealing with IO, she's going to warn you like a good
detector should. I can't remember what band those drones are on,
I swear it's X. So if I were you while on I-40, I'd switch to City
and go into LOx mode. Have a great trip and keep the bugs off
your glass and the bears off your @ss....... :)

Wilmington PD is using at least one Stalker LZ1 (assigned to a new light-blue unmarked mustang with dual mounted Ka and handheld radar also). This car is scary, the light-blue really throws you off and they have even gone through the trouble to put black sleeves over the radar antennas so you do not see the white circle from a mile away. Once/if they tint the windows it will be deadly. I of course assume they have more laser guns but do not know of what type. I just thought I would share the info (I do not know what I could do with it, but I know every lidar gun is somewhat different).
On a separate note, does anybody here know what UNC-wilmington campus police are using. I know its always K band, but do they have IO? The reason I ask is b/c 95% of the time you get an alert way ahead of time. However, every once and a while I will get a spurt of half strength K... I am assuming that it is a cop sitting way back in a parking lot (or hopefully on the otherside of a building) but have never directly encountered IO.
NCF-350
11-15-2007, 09:06 PM
I'm not sure about the campus.. if I'm riding thru Wilmington/Wrightsville on the way to fish,, usually pick up K (local kittys/Mounties) or Ka every once in a while from NCHP rollin thru.
I travel 87 south to 74/76 and then to the bridge where the Wild Life Management ramp is there at the foot of it there at the ICW (Intra Coastal Waterway). Only got off the beaten path one time to make a hospital run due to a nasty gaff accident.... wasnt too concerned with what or any radar on that situation..... :o

I ran the V1 thru Gboro over to Winston (early a.m. and afternoon coming back). Had some falses, but was suprised, not too bad!
Only picked up on Ka (East bound trooper C/O - long distance warning).
Coming back I went to a friends in Asheboro (took 220 South to 139 into Troy), zero falses - nice stretch of road too by the way.
I would think the V1 would be good for ya, run in little L mode when in the city - A mode for highway - should be good to go! ;)

Wilmington PD also has a cherry red unmarked charger with I/O Ka that knows how to use it. I was the only car on the road but he had been comming towards me for a mile, so I was doing like 5 over by the time he got near me, thinking he would of shot me by now... sure enough, full Ka just as he passes me.
That I know of so far in Wilmington, NC:
- Unmarked chargers - chery red, light blue, & white [I/O Ka]
- Marked chargers - [all Ka, I think]
- Unmarked mustangs (new) - light blue & white [I/O Ka mounted & handheld, & laser (LZ1)]
- White marked (but barely) BMW motorcycles [I/O Ka... I would bet laser too, but cannot confirm]
--- that is a lot of money for one police deparment, and they train them well, so watch out if you come here or live here...
- I have also seen the unmarked tan campus police suburban running K on the streets off-campus (but he was probably just to lazy to turn the gun off)
- I am not sure if they have unmarked vic's for traffic enforcement still, I have not seen any in awhile with radar. Detectives drive both unmarked vic's and grand marq's (came up on one pretty fast and caught his attention and I also had one follow me for a few mile after taking a turn aggresively -- the detectives tend to only care about DUIs though).

About 40% of the troopers in NC are running VASCAR or the clocking clone Kustom makes. You won't pick anything up with your detector if the car is equipped with a clocking device. In the 1980's VASCAR fell out of favor due to unfavorable court decisions, but now the pendulum has swung back.

Hi,
I got a speeding ticket on the 540 near the Capital blvd exit in Raleigh on Nov. 21. It was issued by the Highway Patrol Troop/Squad "C". My radar detector, a Passport 8500, did not go off (I posted this to the Escort forum too). Trooper said she was running IO radar. Does anyone know specifically what type of radar is used by the Highway Patrol or that Troop? Is it indicated anywhere on the ticket? I couldn't find any mention of the method of measurement on the citation.

justin more than likely she was running Golden Eagle Ka (35.5)
Although they are very good with the IO X-band too, but in Wake County I would say it was Ka that got you.
Just saw the discussion over in the Escort section regarding the "quick trigger" and I'll bet money thats how she got you! As far as quick trigger verses tracking history...not sure about that one. Really all they have to do is visually estimate your speed and they could cite you, but don't take my word on that...I think that would be a question worth asking!

In North Carolina an 86/65 speeding ticket is a mandatory court appearance. It is also an automatic suspension with a huge insurance increase when you do get your license back. A lot depends on your prior record.
In most places you can go in and talk tot he prosecutor prior to your court date. The clerk of ocurt can give you his hours. I doubt he will go for a reduction to a nine over so you may want to use your Prayer for Judgment. Each household gets one every three years. If he won't deal then you do need an attorney. Google North Carolina Speeding Ticket and look for an attorney in that county.

01-26-2008, 08:17 PM
GET THE LAWYER. You are at risk of losing your license. If you have no priors you could go on court day and talk to the ADA and see what he offers, you can always ask for a lawyer then too if he does not offer what you like. However, if you get a lawer, you end up paying the same amount for fine+court costs and you get nothing or almost nothing on your record.
I got the same ticket in GA (86/65 with laser), wrote a letter to the DA to see what he said. I was told to pay the fine (his pay check more or less) and to take an online course (which took about 30 minutes) and I agreed to the charge of "Improper equipment"(haha). I am pretty sure that charge never comes back to NC at all and definetly does not affect insurance. As long as I do not get pulled again in GA (knock on wood) its like it never happened and even then it just means it will be harder to get out of the next issue.

In the last couple of weeks I've seen several laser traps. In every case the shooter was positioned on top of a bridge with 4 or 5 chase cars positioned close by. They're using the no access bridge just before the rest area on I-85-S at Kannapolis with chase cars on the shoulder and today they were on US-64-E on the Middlesex ( 446 I think) bridge with 2 chase cars on the ramp and 2 had already run down customers. Depends on the area, the lawyer, the actual fine for that violation, etc... I would call around, this an everyday occurance for a traffic lawyer. I would bet b/w $100-500 contingent upon the decision. If you get a good lawyer, I bet you pay 300 and it all goes in his pocket and you have no record. If you are not so lucky than you might pay 500 and get a reduced charge on your record. Either way, if you get a lawyer who isnt a complete idiot you should be better off and get to keep your license at a minumum. OF course if you already have a few points on your record you could be screwed. Call the lawyer, be honest, he will tell you what will probably happen, and then call two other lawyers and hire the one you like.

Thought I would bump the NC thread to the top with a quick question-
Has anyone experienced any Laser traps lately by NCSHP? Just wondering what areas of the State are seeing the Lidar action- I'm pretty sure some of our coastal friends have seen the unfortunate side of the ProLaser III!!!
I'm in Raleigh, and have seen nothing! Just the classes being trained and being certified at the I-40 and Rock Quarry Rd. overpass. Twice I have seen about 50 Troopers lined up and training but I have been in a company vehicle with no detector to play with! :x

Seen 'em on I-85 around the 58 mile marker, Concord area and on Hwy 64 in the Nashville/Spring Hope/Zebulon area. In all cases they were on the bridge with chase cars ready on the ramps or roadside.

I drove from the mountains to the sea (Beaufort) and back this past weekend and did'nt see any laser, in fact, the last time I saw any was over the Thanksgiving travel weekend last year here in the mountains but I try to keep a watchful eye when on the road. I think when memorial day rolls around at the end of May you better watch out!!!

I made a trip from Atlanta up to Hickory a few weeks ago. Didn't run across any laser, just a couple of NCSHP I/O Ka-band encounters on US321. (I would have preferred laser!)

I figured I'd been lurking long enough, plus I needed to bump this thread for a good cause.
Today, SHP was out on I-77 at Tyvola (Exit 5) shooting northbound traffic with LIDAR. I didn't actually go out there, but I heard them setting up from my scanner (Pro-97) around 9AM. The chase units were late getting there, so the sargent kept asking where they were.

I'd give it another year before buying countermeasures in the Charlotte area.
On a side note, woke up this morning to hear this on the scanner:
"Monroe, show H-(snip) and H-(snip) 10-6 reference radar, rear stationary."
It was on the lowband, so they were probably out on 485 doing some training.

SHP has been enforcing I-485 a lot lately, I've seen them out there every single day last week. I finally got a video today (bad quality, taken with phone). There were two of them, one was marked, the other was unmarked (probably just talking, but they were definitely running I/O. I'll make another run tomorrow with my digital camera, and hopefully I'll get a better capture.
BTW, this was just before 5PM, I had already passed them (inner loop), and circled around to capture the video (outer loop). I made another pass an hour later, by time I circled back around, he was [gone] chasing after a customer (saw the lights flashing), but apparently he saw a better target on the OTHER side of the highway and pulls a u-turn to go catch him! Someone caught a break.
Enjoy!

Hey everyone,
Another North Carolinian here. Originally from Asheboro, but living in Raleigh now. So I travel 64 quite a bit.
I'm relatively new with radar detectors. I just ordered my Whistler XTR-695 yesterday. Been waiting a long time for it. I'll hopefully get it before this Labor Day weekend - planning on making the trip down 64.
There are a lot of posts on this thread...and I plan to read through all of them. In the meantime, if anyone has any tips for me (how to configure my 695, etc) I welcome everything!
Thanks!

I saw no LEOs at all and received no warnings from my XTR-695.

No problem. I would always be cautious of the Ramseur area. That's where I've received the only speeding ticket I've ever had and where I saw the NCSHP this weekend. There's definitely a lot of good hiding spots around the curves and behind bridges on this route!

I came across a CMPD unit with a K-band unit the other morning. As soon as I turned out of my neighborhood I got a full blast of K-band and about 5 seconds later I saw him pass on the otherside of the road (Highway 49 past I-485 just before Harrisburg). He most likely left the unit on, as he was heading back home (Concord).

Ok here's my trip report. I own a Whistler Pro-78.
Drove from Raleigh to Nags Head along highway 64. Just outside of Raleigh on the Knightdale bypass I detected a Wake County sheriff running C/O X-band heading in the other direction. X-band no less!
Quiet on the long stretches of road where the speed limit is 70 mph. However I saw a lot of activity where speed dropped for any reason. Saw some poor sole in a mini-van pulled over by the NCSHP where the speed dropped from 55 to 45 guess he missed the sign.
The closer I got to the coast the more LEOs I saw. Detected quite a few LEOs heading in the opposite direction on the 2-lane stretch oh highway heading into the OBX where the speed limit is 55.
The OBX (outter banks) is absolutely loaded with LEOs running C/O radar (Dare County Police). Whenever we drove somewhere I either detected a LEO or saw someone pulled over. Great place to try out your RD! I think the LEOs really prey on the tourists down there so watch out!
On the return trip I detected one NCSHP (C/O KA) traveling in the opposite direction on the 2-lane stretch of 64 then it was quiet the rest of the way.
Overall the Pro-78 performed well with virtually no false alarms. I'm impressed with the Pro-78 value.
In summary:
C/O X-Band just outside of Raleigh on 64 bypass
Nothing on 70 mph stretches of highway
Good amount of NCSHP C/O KA Band on 64 leading into and out of OBX where speed is limited to 55 mph
Lots of K and KA C/O Band once in Dare County (Dare County Police)

I travel a lot from SC to Mt. Airy up I-85 and I-77. Thanksgiving day I got a ticket going 80 in a 65 by an unmarked Charger. He was an A**.
Trafic was heavy and all cars were traveling at 73-75 MPH max. He simply picked me out of the crowd. The ticket said "the officer had probably cause to believe" that I was doing 80mph in a 65 zone. Does this mean he did not clock me w/ any radar?
I am planning to call the DA and see what can be done to reduce the points. Otherwise, I will have to make a trip up in Jan to visit the judge.
Any suggestions?
Regardless, my V1 will be here by Friday. I mainly drive the hwy so this seemed to be the best choice for the $$.

I live in the Belmont/Mt Holly area; just north of Gastonia.
If you're traveling I85, be careful when you get anywhere near exits/mile markers 27-24 as there is a lot of speed enforcement in this area.
NCSHP like to sit at the top of the south bound ramp at the Sam Wilson road exit and use VASCAR. You will see the painted marks on the highway. I forget the exit number, maybe 27?. There is also a trucker weigh station about one mile below Sam Wilson road, so the enforcement vehicles are always going in and out of this are regularly.
I don't have a long commute to work like I did 5 years ago. I remember a motorcycle cop shooting Ka band I/0 on the shoulder of Hwy 49, just beyond UNC Charlotte area.

From the NC Highway Patrol website:
Highway Patrol Conducting Operation Slow Down
Secretary Reuben Young, North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety, and Colonel Walter J. Wilson, Jr., Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, announced that beginning today, the N.C. State Highway Patrol will conduct Operation Slow Down-Interstate Initiative to ticket speeders on North Carolina's interstates. Troopers will conduct the operation starting today through Feb. 22nd to encourage drivers to slow down and follow the speed limit.
“The purpose of the operation is to reduce speed related collisions on North Carolina Interstates,” said Secretary Young. “During the past four years, 359 motorists have been killed and 14,297 injured in 50,222 collisions on our interstates; speed is the leading cause of those collisions.”
Stepped-up enforcement and patrols will be conducted across the state, focusing on motorists speeding on interstates and major four-lane highways.
“Troopers are determined to reduce fatal collisions in North Carolina by going after speeders who recklessly endanger our citizens,” said Colonel Wilson. “Speeding is the leading causes of traffic deaths and collisions in our state. Operation Slow Down will help in our efforts to reverse that trend.”
Dangerous driving can be reported to the Highway Patrol by dialing *HP on cellular phones from anywhere in the state.

Today, had my first NC laser experience.
Was heading from Rt 64 to I-540 a little past Knightdale on the way to Wake Forest, There ws a NCSHP sitting under a bridge with his passenger door open shooting laser from about half mile from bridge.
There is a section there on 540 that is going down hill with a slight curve to the left. There he was shooting, my V1- went off and I normally just blow it off as a SVU brake light or something, got a bogey alert, push the mute button but did back down about 5 mph to about 75. Happened at around 6:45 pm with most traffic coming coming out of RPT. Why he choose the least traveled section is beyond me.
V-1 lit up again and as I search the front horizon, there he was. He must have been in a good mood because most NCHSP will give tickets out when more than 9 over. Going to church on Sundays helps I guess. Esting donuts helps too becasue he had a big pot on him too and probably could get up from the stooped over positon

This bridge is 1.5 miles west of exit 59.
The NCSHP sit on this bridge and shoot you with radar. Dont know what band yet, but I have seen them many times there. In fact I sometimes pass by them on this bridge as Im heading home from work.
Sometimes their in a unmarked suv.
Ill keep you updated as I work about 1500 feet from this location.

^ I'd put money on it that it's LIDAR not radar.

You can see the SUV in the background.
Also check out this video, kinda neat. http://www.wsoctv.com/video/16914015/index.html
That's near my house and they're always out there.

Just got back from visiting my parents in Wilmington, lots of new RLC's, but luckily my 9500ix notified me of them. Didn’t see much action down there but the speed limits are high enough I did just fine with maximum filtering.

Hey NC forum members,
I recently took a trip to Cary NC. Traveling on I-40 around the Raleigh-Durham area, I received a lot of weird K band alerts. No enforcement was visible. The K band alerts were weak to medium strength. They were not constantly on, kinda acted like instant-on, but I never saw any enforcement at all. Seemed to be around overpasses. Is there some k band system used in NC?
Seemed like most of the real enforcement was Ka band. I did have one X band encounter too.
Just curious as to the source, the K band alerts were strange and annoying.

North Carolina traffic laws/DMV regulations suck. Worst in the country.

High Point city cops have new toys. They went from K band to Ka and are heavily patrolling 311 from NC-68 to Bus 85. Those without RD's (or with Cobras) and are speeding will be skeerood.

That's awful. You could be cited for 75 in a 70 and get your license suspended.

I'm pretty sure that those alerts are for the NCDOT traffic monitoring. If you look along the side of the highway when you get those, you might see a light pole with a small black device near the top. I believe those are the source of the K band alerts that my RD gives, also.

It sucks for the people who are just passing thru but the locals get used to where the falses are and can distinguish them from real threats. I never give those a second thought anymore. My wife even tries to call out 24.140 etc to guess what band its going to read as we are coming up to some known ones. :D
