Two quick questions... (limo and nüvi)

Hey all.

Those of you who've caught my very few other posts will know I'm a newbie around here (and to the world of RD's too).

I have two quick questions....


(1) I run the VI in "a" mode. Today I was driving down the street where there was nothing around us (ie: buildings, cops, etc). Than this big-ass limo pulls up along side of me doing probably 50% faster than my own speed. Almost as soon as he get's along side of me by V1 starts going ballistic with a ka full report. Kinda scared the crap out of me lol.

Anyway, any idea what would have caused this? The fact that the V1 didn't go off until the limo was directly beside me, there were no cops around, and as soon as the limo got ahead of me, the V1 went quiet.


(2) -- and now for the uber-newbie question.... I have been thinking about getting the Garmin nüvi 660. But I was wondering what kind (if any at all) such a device would interfere with the V1 RD. (again, this shows my level of understanding of RD's at this point)

1 Probably a leaky cheap RD in the limo causing the false on your RD.

2 Possible laser alerts from the LCD screen, probably no issues.

Nuvi 660 is outstanding GPS!!!!...wide touchscreen,FM-modulator,bluetooth for GSM calls,customPOI(you can load from any speedcam-database),MP3....etc..etc.,Then hook your nuvi660 with GilssonGPS external antenna and you'll be :shock: surprised what this thing is capable of :!:

You're fine w/ the GPS - few laser alerts if they are pointed right at each other.

I am gonna have to go with the leaky crapra too. V1 filtered if for awhile and than it was just too strong and it let it through.

Thanks a bunch of for the feedback already!!

I live in an area that has very very few LEO's that actually use radar, but I travel a lot out-of-the-area and thus the need for my RD. I started off with the 9500i, but as others on here have said "Its just too scary quiet". I'd rather have nothing and than all of a sudden something, even if it's bogus, than have nothing and not know something that might be legit is out there. Everywhere here were I live is trees (the big suckers) and mountains, and a buddy of mine I was talking too the other day was telling me a story of his V1 picking up a ping from cops 4 miles away -- through the mountains -- and when he finally saw the cops, there were 6 of them, and 2 ambulances flying through the mountains. lol, said he couldn't figure out what the hell was setting off his v1 out in the middle of the redwood tress, than all of a sudden all hell breaks loose and out of no where all those cops go flying by. Suffice to say, I'd rather have a bleep at 4 miles, than nothing at all until they are on my bumpers or in my headlights -- even if it means the local gas station door setting of a ka or x band alert.


Anyway, back on-topic here...

Is this the external antenna that you suggest for the nuvi 660 ?? Are you sure (ie: do you yourself use it) this sucker will even plug into the nuvi 660 ??

Yes this is external antenna!I have nuvi670 wich is identical(hardware) as nuvi660.Antenna on this link is one of the best if not THE BEST GPS antenna....I have this antenna on my 670...works like a charm!
I have MCX 90°elbow connector.Check your nuvi what type of connector is! Mine is MCX...but I am from Europe,maybe it's different(BNC or FME connector) for US market...also,think how are you going to mount your nuvi....you might need straight not 90°connector!O.K....Take Care :D

Well, I ordered one of those Gilsson and it showed up yesterday.

Plugged it into my unit and it took it from 22 feet with 6 bars (4 solid) to 8 feet with 11 bars (9 solid).

I'd say that's a pretty fair improvement!

just make sure that the nav isn't right next to the RD. You can try it but if it is really close you might get a laser alert. 8 inches should b far away enough. Perhaps even less you'll have to try it out.

Yeah, you won't be dissapointed with any of the Nuvi's, they are great GPS's.

Yeah, I have the 350 too... but I live in the middle of the redwood trees (http://yokhannan.dyndns.org/pics/redwoods.jpg)... and sometimes we loose connections while going through the denser sections of the forests... so, hoping to resolve it with the Gilsson. (check out this big feller (http://yokhannan.dyndns.org/pics/100_0023.jpg) in my backyard)

Yeah, I mount the V1 on the drivers side of the RVM, and I have the Nuvi almost directly beside my steering wheel. There's a good 18-20 inches.

I'm also wondering what kind of interference the FM TMC traffic receiver is going to cause throughout the whole system.
