You can tell that the LEO's are getting geared up for a big Thanksgiving ticket fest. They were out in full force today in Texas. I had 5 separate radar encounters on the way home from work today.

The first was in traffic so I didn't pay much attention to it. It's hard to find freeways in Houston at 5:00 pm in which you can speed on. So, LEO's really hit the feeder roads hard. Here is an example.

Anyway, after I got out of the city limits of Houston today, I really started noticing that the Texas DPS were out in full force.

I started getting a faint Ka signal and it slowly grew. I picked it up about 3 or more miles away from the where the LEO was. As it turns out, there were 2 DPS officers with cars pulled over within 500 yards of each other. One of the DPS officers left his radar on during the stop and the other one didn't? Here are some pics of the encounter and of my 940 in action.

Here are some pics of the second DPS officer. He had this car pulled over about 500 yards past the one above.

Now for the question. I was about 5 miles from my home when I topped a hill and Boom, my radar lit up like a Christmas tree. There was a pack car about 1/8th of a mile in front of me and I assumed that I would pick up radar scatter from them. I was the lead car in a pack of about 5. The pack of cars in front of me were about 1/8 of a mile ahead. Thankfully, I was close to home and was only going 5 miles over the posted speed limit.

Do LEO's skip packs of cars and say, target every other pack. IT seems like cars always travel in bunches on my route. You can get thru one pack of cars and then in a few miles your in another pack. This is always caused by someone going slow in the left fast lane.

The reason that I ask this question is that either one of two things happened. Either the DPS didn't target the car in front of me that was visible or he was using POP? I don't know but I think that he was selectively enforcing traffic and looking for a good target. It was dark by the time this all happened but I could clearly see that it was a DPS officer.

Now I'm questioning whether or not I should turn on POP on my Bel 940?

Does anyone know if the Texas DPS uses POP? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah.. All I can say is I love my Bel 995. I'm seriously considering a move to the RX75.

With all these LEOs you should invest in a camcorder...you can be famous on youtube.

Then I was IO'd and he didn't shoot the cars in front of me like the locals usually do. This guys was a bonified "Red Patch" DPS.

I'm on my way home now. We'll see what I get into tonight :o

Is it time to replace my old V895 with a brand new V940?

I'm kinda learning about this thing after-the-fact which isn't my traditional method of operation.

The unit I got this afternoon has a date of 2607 and shows the M4 antenna design. Revision level appears to be 6.3.

I'm kinda peeved - - I didn't realize I couldn't shut down X band and the AUTOSCAN feature isn't included. I'm not going to tolerate another BEL with its non-stop false alarms. So far, it seems OK, but I'm real annoyed about not being able to terminate X band. I'm trying to decide whether to exchange it for the 995 which has those features and is another $45 or so. Not sure if it's worth the $$ and effort to swap.

I'm trying to keep things in a positive light. My aged 7500S is falsing more and more often on LASER and this 9400 is just to act as a replacement unit in a little-used car. Seems like a sweet deal @ $125.

If you want to terminate X band nomore55 than just pull the trigger....the 995 is on sale at CC online for 50 bucks off. Order it there and select pick up in store. The v995 is quieter than the 940. I just wish this 940 of mine didn't croak it was an excellent detector...I'm going to fiddle with techmode.

Oh and Lumberjack, I have never seen such a LEO fest,,,,You must have a ball my friend!!! :D

Lord, I hear ya - - thanks. I just don't know if I want to fool around with returning it and laying out more dollar for an infrequently used unit. As I said in my PM to you, it's likely the 940 will be superior to the old 7500S it's replacing.

BTW, CC will honor their own on-line pricing if you ask. The 940 I bought today was marked $150 (IIRC) on the box and they grabbed a manager and "price matched" their internet pricing @ $125.
Oh and Lumberjack, I have never seen such a LEO fest,,,,You must have a ball my friend!!! :D
The LEO's were out again today. But not as heavy as yesterday.

I saw a Harris County Constable this morning on the way into work.
He came up from behind and gunned me. I was able to snap off a pic when he rolled by.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc70/Lumberjack93/DSC02237.jpg

Then, on my way home I picked up a LEO who already had a guy pulled over. I picked him up a long way away with my 940. It's funny, some LEO's leave their radar on during a stop and some don't.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc70/Lumberjack93/DSC02239.jpg

Anyway, after getting gunned from behind and twice on the way home, I am seriously considering buying a high end detector. While I'm totally satisfied with my 940, I am now thinking that with as much driving as I do, I could really benefit from a high end detector.

I've been tinkering around with buying a Valentine 1, an Escort 9500i and a Bel STI. After reading the Guys of Lidar most recent test results, I see where the V1 and the 9500i seem to be the top performers of the 3.

However, when you consider the distance that I drive, I really like the feature that you get with the 9500i. You can eliminate falses by marking them with the GPS feature. Then, the next time you go by that grocery store with the leaky X or K band auto door opener, you won't have to listen to it. But, it will pick up new signals in that same area, just not the one that you marked as a false.

The Ka distance that I would get from any of these three top end models would work fine for my purposes. I just really like the 9500i. I also like the V1's ability to see in front or behind you and the directional arrows. The STI, I like it's night illumination and ergonomics. However, it doesn't seem to have the range of the other two. But, the range on any of the top three is extreme to begin with.

So, I guess I'll really need to think about it. We don't see a lot of laser down here in Texas. Mostly Ka by State Troopers and K by local Sheriffs and Constables depts. Cities in Texas use a mixed bag of Ka, K and Laser. My routes don't take me by any photo radar so I'm covered there.

Anyway, I'm in a real delima about which one to buy. My wife has already spoken for my 940. It will work just fine around the small town that I live in.

So, here's the $64,000.00 question. What unit do you like the best out of the 9500i, STI and V1? What features do you like best about each of them? How easy is it to update the firmware? Any known issues with any of these models that are currently in prouduction? I do see where the firmware version on the 9500i will be able to be flashed from a download. I like that as opposed to having to send the unit in for a firmware update.

Thanks for any advice you guys have.

Is laser used in your area? If so consider getting a jammer. Since you are already happy with your 940.

I rarely have Laser encounters here in Texas. Usually only in the spring. The LEO's here in Texas don't like them from what I hear. It's too hot (105 degrees) in Summer on some days. LEO's wearing a vest and a hot uniform don't really savor hanging out of a window to shoot you with a laser when they can do it with a fixed mount Stalker from within the confines of an air-conditioned patrol car. In the winter it's usually rainy. That's why I don't think we see a lot of Lasers in Texas.

Ka is the choice of the Texas DPS.

I'd stick with that 940. It seems to serve you well with plenty of advanced warning.

The more I've thought about it the more I'm considering sticking with the 940. I don't know what it is but I think I got a really sensative unit from Bel. The reason I say that is I seem to be getting range like a 995 would have. I just don't have the option to totally eliminate X band and I don't have the 9500i's ability to eliminate known falses thru programming.

However, I only spent 125.00 for my unit at Circuit City last year.

I counted the number of falses I get on my way to work and it is only 3. I can live with 3 falses a day.

By the way, here is a pic of an encounter I had today. I picked up a Ka signal on this DPS car close to 3 miles away. A cold front just came thru today and I seem to be getting even better reception than I usually get.
