I'm not so hot on POP. On my normal 1000 mile trip over the weekend I had 5 false POP's and 0 real ones. I was really disappointed with the X50. I've only had it 3 weeks and This was my second trip with it. I'm out in the middle of nowhere and getting false X's with nothing visible anywhere. No hiding spots either. The same happened with a POP false. I'm tempted to go back to my old cheap Whistlers as I've never been ticketed using them and I get a lot less falses with them.

ALL RD's FALSE!!! no big deal. 5 flase POP alerts in a 1000 mile stretch is nothing. Thats like 1 every 2 hours. Face it no detector can be perfect.

From what I understand, most people run with POP off on the X50, have you tried that or are you really worried about POP radar?
Supposedly, in Automode, the X50 is one of the queitest detectors.

false X's with nothing visible anywhere.
Maybe you were picking up a cellular type antena that was leaking a X band freq?

DITTO! they do false so much, when i had it i left it on but damn its loud when it says "POP"
i like how the V1 doesnt say POP just alerts
when the X50 POP's i ignore it coz its never been a real threat

when pop goes off it scares the dickins out of me cause its so loud and at a constant like tone. I leave it off probably 90% of the time as with X band.

Isn't that the same thing when your V1 goes off in a X or K or Ka band alert and the tone stays longer than the POP beep with the X50? It even makes you pay more attention by looking for LEO and yet you don't find one. At least when you know it POP's, you ignore it and spend less time worrying about a real threat.

Best thing to do is turn POP off. You'll get the same thing with your whistlers. Bottom line, all RD's makes false alert and are not immune to it.

I just did this too in the Philly area. Road tripped up to north jersey and back this weekend and got POP falses more often than all other falses combined. Very dissapointing. However, as NJ and PA are the two most primative radar states in the nation that I'm aware of (PA = vascar only and troopers use K/Ka instant on.... NJ = X+K and they're easy as HELL to detect coming) I'll probably turn it back off. I'd just like some more information about NJ/PA/MD/DE and POP before I do.

Only state on East coast with POP is NY and they havce the units upstate
Geneva NY has BeeIII and enforcers units in their cars so when i get a POP alert i am near a cop

I expected better out of what I thought was a top notch unit. POP is supposedly used in Illinois which is where most of my 1000 miles is traveled so that's why I turned it on, but it falses much more than my cheap Whistlers. With the Whistler and a CB I'm pretty safe. Of course I don't run much over 9 mph over the limit anyway.
I ran my Whistler 1650 on the back window and the X50 in the front for a 120 mile test today and the X50 went off 32 times (1 POP) and the Whistler, 20 times. All were false.
I've had RD's for 20 some years. My first was a Fox that had the head end mounted in the grill. Over the years, it seemed like each time I bought a new detector, I would get less false detects. Now it just seems they are adding bands without worrying about falses.

When you get into a real radar situation you will be thankful that you have a top of the line detector. That is when you will notice the difference between what you are used to and the quality of the X50. The X50 is more sensitive than the other brands that you named which means you will get some more falses. Like I said when you are in a real situation you will be glad you have quality and not junk. By the way if you ever take a drive through some of the towns in East TN make sure POP is on. You will see what your X50 is capable of.

Well, I believe I'll keep it and try to get used to it. It has detected real radar so I know that it can do it. I do like the automute and the mute button located on the lighter plug as on my van, I have an extra lighter plug located just to where I can hit the button with my right hand without leaning forward.
I'm still waiting for my first laser detect on it. Illinois was having major speed traps on I-57 every Sunday around the 220 cop shop and my old Whister wasn't detecting anything and from where they were watching, I don't think they were using VASCAR (I could be wrong however, and I usually am). I figured it was laser but my Whister has the laser band. I don't have a front plate so they may not have aimed at me.
The last 3 weeks I either took another route or they just weren't set up. Maybe they stopped the offensive at the beginning of Aug.
How close do they have to be for my RD to detect laser? If they are targeting a car next to me will I get a detect?
I am using expert mode and pulled into a CVS the other day. I had 3 x's and 2 K detects! Pretty cool to see all of those even though they were all false. I can't imagine what CVS has that is setting off all 5 as there's no other business on that corner. I know the X's can be door opener sensors but what would the K's be?

If they aim at your plates or headlights, your detector could miss it due to the narrow beam width. Having the detector mounted low increases your chance of detection, but the cops have your speed before you can react. The V1 is sensitive enough to pick up reflected laser when it hits another car, but that's about the only detector that can do this.
If laser is commonly used in your area, you should consider getting some laser countermeasures (Veil, Laser Shield if you have a front plate, and a jammer if you can afford one).

Burglar alarm sensors usually use X but they're usually weak and not often detected outside the building. How many automatic doors are on that CVS? Usually each door has 2 sensors, one inside and one outside. Each one of those sensors emits either X or K (newer ones are often K, older ones are X).

I have mine mounted just above the rear view mirror but under the tint so it probably isn't that good for laser as the van is already much higher than any car, but at least I don't have a front plate. I even removed the mount but that was for asthetic reasons.
I can't remember if CVS's internal doors have their own sensors or are activated with the external doors so I'm not sure.
Last week I got a strong K band coming from that area but I wasn't near enough to the store yet so I slowed down. There just behind some bushes was Elkhart's famous motorcycle cop with his gun pointed straight at me. I tried not to smile too much as he and I made eye contact as I passed him. On my 5 mile hop to work CVS and Walgreens are my only falses I get so it's easy to tell when it's real, and the 2 stores are only 3 blocks apart. They've never gotten me yet but my wife got it while ignoring the muted signal of her Whistler going off. I had shorted the mute switch so that it went into muted mode when it powered up but after that I took the jumper off so that she'd get the full blast each time.
