Escort has not offfered even 1 "upgrade" to their detectors in the past 5 years that they have advertized them for the 8500. What they did do was offer a new model and a 30 dollar trade in for the $300 "upgradable detector. So, I know I am pointing out the obvious, but I just want everyone who is considering a 300-350 dollar detector to be fully informed about the manufacturer's track record vs. their promises.

That is very true, they haven't offered an upgrade, and when they do, they don't really advertise it. However, they built something that is a good detector and doesn't need constant firmware updates to fix bugs in it.

Personally I love the V1 and all it has to offer, but having to send it in for constant firmware upgrades when it doesn't completely fix the problem is rediculous.

You are right when you look at total cost of ownership this has to be considered.

In that case even my old Whister 1650 was upgradable. It was upgraded to an 8500 X50.

Software upgrades: Yes
Hardware upgrades: No

I consider Escort to have the advantage with software, since they dont revise very much and of course give the V1 the advantage with hardware upgrades since they're the only ones that do it.
