Say for instance I mount the 9500ci remote antenna on a bracket like a windshield detector behind my rearview mirror up high, do you think thieves will think it is a reg detector and try to steal it not knowing? Or will think it is like a EZ pass toll box, or will not know what it is.

The reason I am asking is it still can be seen from the outside of the car esp from the front.

Most thieves don't spend much time assessing the value of whatever it is they intend to steal. They just take it. If the radar antenna is obvious, it is in danger of being stolen.

I agree, I don't think they think, they just take an opportunity and go for it. My Fiance left her car unlocked they other night and someone stole the change in the center console, left the V1 and 2 sets of golf clubs alone!!!

Glad I had just installed the invisicord on the V1 because that has to be the only reason they missed it, because it was not powered up.

Don't sweat what a thief will do, if they want it they will find a way to get it.

You could try the alarm system I use in the Vette, an empty holster left on the dash so they know the owner is packing!! :D

Focalcivic, I've tested my 9500ci for long enough now to realize that mounting it low in the grille has very little effect on its performance as long as it is unobstructed. Its just a matter of tweaking the angle of the antenna to ideally match its lower mounting location. This will solve your theif problem too. Here is a good example:

I was sitting in traffic near the local chicken plant which has an X band door opener. My 9500ci antenna, mounted low and optimally angled with regards to tilt, was occasionally alerting to X band radar whereas my high mounted 9500i was not at all. Yet my 9500ci's antenna was being blocked from a direct line of site view towards the X band antenna location by the car in front of me! Likewise, my grille mounted 9500ci antenna always beats out either my high windshield mounted STi or 9500i in alerting to K band radar sources around town by up to 15 seconds while driving around town.

I honestly hope you're right. It's perhaps the only flaw in an awesome detector.

In the meantime, I plan to milk it for all it's worth. :D

The STi antenna (used in the 9500ci and in the STi-R) has a predominantly downward flare. Mounting any of these antennas high on a windshield, the best angle is a totally level case. For the 9500ci or STi-R antenna, this assumes that you have the case oriented such that the serial number sticker is on top.

When mounting a 9500ci or STi-R antenna in a car grille which is 2 to 3 feet off the ground then,

Antenna sticker side up:

-- Adjust the angle of the case such that the front of the antenna is tilted up between 2 to 8 degrees -- 5 degrees being optimal.

Antenna sticker side down:

-- Adjust the angle of the case such that the front of the antenna is tilted down between 2 to 8 degrees -- 5 degrees being optimal.

If your 9500ci or STi antenna is mounted lower than 2 feet off the ground, then use the above but note that theoretically 6 or 7 degrees would be optimal.

I am lucky that I know which radar and laser they use in my county, and a offer to spend a few hours with a local LEO testing it.

I will be much lower than 2 feet, more like 8 inches off the road.

In that case and if that is the highest available mounting option, then mount the antenna sticker side down and level. That would be ideal for this specific setup. :)
