View Full Version : Which RADAR is 35.2 GHz?

Which RADAR gun runs at 35.2 GHz (Ka)? I encountered a NYSP SUV running C/O 35.2 GHz yesterday. I didn't see any external antenna. They usually run Stalkers of various flavors, mostly at 34.7 but several at 34.9. Funny thing, he had a bicycle mounted on the back too. It was on I-90 near Utica, NY. He was around a curve and already had a customer. I was able to make two runs at him with different detectors running. The results were interesting, as one performed MUCH better than the other against this particular gun and frequency.

There are only three Ka band frequencies used by police radar in the US.

1. 33.8 - MPH
2. 34.7 - Applied Concepts (Stalker)
3. 35.5 - Kustom and Decatur

Your spec display probably got a bad reading or the police radar was way out of tune.

3. 35.5 - Kustom and Decatur

Your spec display probably got a bad reading or the police radar was way out of tune.

I think the spec display was right on, as it indicated correctly for the other 20 or so encounters yesterday. For this gun, it varied from 35.20 to 35.19 as I approached with the STi. I doubt if the gun was out of tune, as they seem to get them calibrated very regularly. Also, it was a brand new SUV, which leads me to believe it probably has the latest equipment. Thus, whatever the radar unit, the tuning must have been intentional.

Back in the early 90's when the Stalkers first came out, they were seeking permission from the FCC to develop and market a spread spectrum radar gun which would "hop" frequencies hundreds or thousands of times per second throughout the (then) wide Ka range. There were a few magazine articles published about this. Several objections were filed with the FCC to prevent this from happening, including an objection filed by Whistler.

A gun such as this would mean BIG problems for radar detectors. If implemented the way it is described, NO current detector would alert to it.

This gun never saw the light of day. But I also haven't found anyone who knows what became of the project either. I have asked several people in the engineering departments of all major detector manufacturers, as well as people in the radar gun industry. One person who used to be on this forum called up Stalker and asked about it, and the rep didn't even know what he was talking about. At any rate, it's safe to say that we don't need to worry about a frequency hopper being out on the roads, but I still wish I knew exactly what happened with the project. I really hope it isn't something they have been refining for the last 15 years!

Although the Stalkers manufactured today are on 34.7 GHz, the original Stalker ATR's were at 34.94 GHz. Reportedly, some early detectors that implemented Ka swept only segments around photo radar at 34.36 GHz and the Stalkers at 34.94 GHz. This was easier for them to do, since at the time most detectors used an oscillator around 11.558 GHz which produced a harmonic at 34.674 GHz, right in the middle of the band. It was easy for them to sweep 34.674 + IF and 34.674 - IF and leave a "hole" around 34.7 which remained unswept. Stalker realized this, and moved their operating frequency to this "hole" in order to defeat these detectors. Of course detectors eventually swept the whole wide Ka and later superwide, but the Stalker freq has remained on 34.7 to this day.

As for what you saw on 35.2 GHz: rumor has it that there were some old Stalker ATR's that operated on 35.2 GHz. GTO_04 is friends with a cop in a town nearby him that has a gun on this freq. From what I remember, he said it was slow to acquire a speed and had crappy range. Perhaps you encountered one of these old guns.

Rumor has it that there also might be Stalker ATR's out there on 34.2 GHz as well.
