View Full Version : How much warning to you get with 35.5 forwardfacing

I just want to know you encounter with forwardfacing 35.5, how many of you encounter this band and what was the warning time. I got .10 miles of forward facing ka 35.5 with my v1. So i wont to know why was it this short and if this is normally and or any other detector does best with it. thanks and please state which radar detector you use.

By "Forward Facing" do you mean "Oncoming"? If so then yes, your warning will be fairly short. Especially if there are hills or curves.

no i dont mean oncomming the leo was was parked on the left side facing the direction I was going and he was running constant on ka

Was he shooting your lane or oncoming traffic?

I dont exactly know which way he was shooting, he could of done both, he could of shot the oncoming traffic or shoot us as we past

Best was 1/2 mile. (boncing off a vehicle he had pulled over)

Worst was about 1/8 mile (nothing to bounce off of.)

I'm guessing he was shooting on-coming traffic. So you were picking up signals bouncing off oncoming cars.

Front-facing, .1 miles is already impressive enough of a result, coming at you, I think it's more of a matter of how long it takes for the cop to enter your line of sight around a curve or over a hill. At any rate, with the exception of the new Belscort remote-mount units the V1 is one of the top dogs for range and also even more so for alert reaction speed (time from detection to sounding the alert), so you're basically equipped with some of the the best protection you can get.

For myself, I'm running a Whistler Pro 78 Rev C, PoP Off that's alerting to constant on K and Ka doppler inbound roughly about a 1/2 mile or so in rolling hills and heavy woods. In real time at 60 mph, that would equate to a 30 second warning, plus or minus a few seconds. Has me wondering if the Troopers here are using higher power settings to compensate for the terrain...just don't know

My question then.......Have you tried relocating/repositioning your unit for better reception?????

Careful there, this is moving 35.5 we're talking about, the Whistler Pro-78 is a great detector but it is behind the V1 in sensitivity by a wide margin on every band. It's all about the encounter how much alert time you get.

You're right .... went back to edit what I think may be happening. The other err, was not to factor in closing speed.

Was home bound yesterday, no traffic, running uphill when the unit went off with increasing doppler. Nothing in sight, a split second later a Sheriff's unit pops over the hill, range roughly 1/2 mile out. The only thing I could deduce for the alert would be scatter from atmospheric bounce (low cloud cover, light rain)...

ive gotten hald mile detection in the pro 78, ramp up never went past 6 but it was flat and there was a couple of semis in opposing lanes

Yeah the XTR-690/Pro-78 are absolutely one of my favorite detectors and I would recommend them without hesitation to anyone out there, but I do have to say that my V1 consistently gets longer real-world range than my XTR-690, sometimes to unbelievable extents (5 minutes of smooth Ka rampup to an oncoming cruiser through dense city traffic)

On the OP's 10 second encounter, that's where his money towards a V1 paid off. I wouldn't be surprised if another less sensitive detector wouldn't have alerted at all until point-blank range when it's too late.

I see a lot of this where I live.

It completely depends on the situation - both C/O and I/O.

For both my old Rev5 x50 as well as my 4307 dated 9500i, I've gotten warnings that were "eye-openingly impressive," and other times, ones which, had I been speeding, I'd surely have eaten a ticket.

You can get anywhere from a hundred ft. to over 700 ft. The warning distance you get really depends on the reflection you get from objects in front of the radar gun. Don't be surprise when you get a short warning. This is also applicable to any Ka band frequency.

It also seemed to have a more "realistic" ramp up. It seemed that the ci was going crazy way before the threat, while the V1 seemed to have a steady increase up untill you got to the threat which would give a more accurate distance to the target. Am I correct? Without the arrows, I would assume that a steller ramp up would be needed to try and guage where the threat is and how far away. I'm not familiar with the CI as I've never owned one, but I kept thinking the patrol car would be on the next block with how crazy the CI got.

Nice vid DJ. Seemed like the V1 alerted first! :D Yep, the V1 alerted first. I was cresting the hill and the V1 is mounted about 3ft higher. The 9500ci alerts first about 90% of the time on 35.5Ka, but not this particular time. But, the V1 is fairly close to the 9500ci on 35.5Ka. 34.7Ka is a different story however.

Us 9500ci users have been quietly complaining to Escort about our rampup. It's too aggressive, just like you mentioned. It makes it very difficult to judge distance. I have been told tha a fix is coming soon, whatever that means. I posted this video a while back showing the 9500ci's lack of rampup.

Yeah man, that's really bad. Awesome detection but Jeez, I thought you got I/Oed in the kill zone with how fast it went up. and how it stayed pegged almost the entire time. What's the deal with 34.7? Do you have any vids of it on this band vs. the V1? I'd be interested in seeing them. I guess I could just go through your youtube video list and find them though. Is your list set to private?

Also, what makes the CI more sensitve? Is it because of more power, better equipment etc?

I got about 1/4 mile once from an officer parked on an on ramp shooting traffic as it passed. It would have been much less if the signal wasn't bouncing off an over head hwy sign announcing the next exit. Shooting Ka at passing traffic makes it difficult to pick up. That's where your eyes, situational awareness, and common sense come in.

I'll never know which band I'm detecting in this region and by god, I hope it's not 35.5 GHz but I know it's 34.7 GHz by DPS.

Awesome detection range (even for the terrain) - can't believe how bad the ramp-up was, in that case!

I typically see that kind of ramp-up on my 9500i only when the enforcement vehicle is "closing."

That kind of detection range really REQUIRES that the unit have more linear ramp-up.

And off axis, the difference is even greater. I did three passes with this 34.7Ka band speed sign three blocks down the cross street and the V1 had a rough time detecting it, but the 9500ci did extremely well. The first pass, the V1 was pretty close, but the last two passes were not. The second pass, the V1 never alerted.
