I was driving home on 4 lane highway, lots of cars I was going 72mph in 65 anyways my v1 went off on ka when I passed a cop going other way but not tell I was like 200 feet from him. never stopped me just thought I would have got a more of a wareing.

Sounds like instant-on to me. No detector can detect a signal that isn't there. The V1 has one of the fastest response-times in the industry.

That was Instant On. Although it's not always the case, generally 65 mph speed zones can have as much as a 15 mph grace before they pull you over. So 72 might have been too close for him to loop around and pull you over. Especially with a mass of cars where there can be some ambiguity as to who was going what speed.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of it being rear facing radar, although I/O is more likely.

Ka warnings are highly impacted by geometry and terrain. Sometimes the warning will be miles, other times it could be no more than 200'. Yesterday was a classic example when I had the V940 riding shot gun. I was traveling on a local road, at the PSL, and came to a corner that's nearly 90 degrees. There was a local peace officer approaching me in the opposite direction. I had less than a 1 second warning from the V940 before I had visual contact with the officer. I've had this same encounter with the V1 and the warning time has been similar....meaning very short :o Very short.

So he was useing pop but there was lots of car in front of me and behind me. so You would think he would be poping other cars so I should picked him up lot sooner?

for the most part, POP seems to have been still-born ;) is it really a legitmate threat today? Was it ever?

POP is an ultra-short duration pulse that's so brief most detectors won't be able to pick it up. LEOs are only supposed to use this ONLY to verify they need to perform a 2nd reading using instant on for the typical duration of a few seconds. POP is uncommon.

Instant-on (I/O) means the LEO can switch the transmitter off and on at will. When it's off, there's nothing for a detector to detect. Once the officer has a target in site, and is concerned about their speed, he flips on the transmitter and gets a reading. There's typically little to no advance warning in such an encounter. I/O is common. I/O can be stationery or rolling.

How do we know if we don't have detectors that can accurately detect it, much less identify it conclusively? :)

It shouldn’t. But certain famous brands have “Selectable POP.” It’s a special operating mode you must activate. Otherwise you’re not POP protected.

There’s only one reason for Selectable POP—the “famous brands” company doesn’t have the technology to make a full-time feature you can live with. Why? Because those detectors poorly distinguish real radar from a thicket of false alarms. So they give you “Selectable POP.” Use it if you can stand it.


Beyond Ordinary

V1’s warning range on POP is beyond the others, too. They trim back warning range on POP to reduce false alarms. V1’s superior engineering gives range on POP that’s beyond them, and beyond line of sight.

The “famous brands” cover only Ka band, too. V1 provides coverage beyond Ka—specifically the MPH Industries models Enforcer™ (K and Ka) and the BEE™ III (Ka).


The World as it Really Is

Probably you’ve noticed that many other detectors create false alarms that set off your detector. Hundreds of thousands of badly engineered detectors from BEL®, Cobra®, Radio Shack® and Uniden® spew local oscillator harmonics that are very similar in character to the POP burst used by MPH Industries. Ordinary detectors aren’t clever enough to reliably distinguish between them.


V1 has never been ordinary. :D "

Ok, the V1 detects Ka POP with 90+% reliability but does not make any effort to distinguish Ka from Ka POP. When POP is turned off, it seems like Ka POP is still detected with a good 10-50% probability. The bayesian reversal of these conditional probabilities is probably not all that great.

The V1 doesn't detect K-band POP (16ms) at all. Nor does any other detector on the market. This is the bigger problem at hand.

I'm just not sure if it's more threat or more "noise", if I may. Let's keep things in perspective: we have some very sharp-eyed spotters here. I don't hear anyone talking about it any longer.

This issue has come up before, and I'm not certain if it's been adequately explained. Apparently, most moving radar used to use the radar to measure patrol car speed. It seems that adding the VSS option to a radar unit still doesn't replace that function of the radar unit, but simply helps it decide which radar signal represents the patrol car speed. Instant On is the main reason you still want to use a radar - absorbing rabbit, whenever possible. You want to follow at a safely dangerous distance: safe for you, dangerous for him, in the event of radar.

Sounds like Instant on was used, and the cop didn't have you in mind as a target but someone coming up behind you. Or ahead of him on his side of the street.
