I was wondering why no one on here has ever tested UNIDEN Radar Detectors?
They don't make them anymore. The last model they made was the GPS model, and Escort reamed them out for that one, so now they're out of the RD business altogether.

Yes, that one. I have a friend who is a product development exec at Uniden, and he says it takes an act of congress to get them to ever update anything on their website. But try actually finding the GPSRD at any dealer. None of the top four online RD dealers carry it. One of them still has it on their site, but if you are lucky enough to actually find it on their site, it says "Discontinued". It's not even in the Uniden.com online store.
I think we've seen the last of Uniden RDs.

Cool, I saw a news article that mentioned something about UNIDEN detectors so thats why i was wondering. Thanks for the info. Do you know how well it worked?

I'm afraid that I do not. By the time I even heard of the GPSRD, Escort was already all over them. It's a shame, because I firmly believe that competition is good. It would certainly be interesting to see just how good it was. At an MSRP of $199.99, I never expected much. And most reviews I've found online seem to be quite negative. One guy even said it was "not as good as my Cobra", lol.
There is one review online that has a bunch of great photos, as well as some basic functional information.

I sure like the look of that detector. Too bad cobras new one does not look anything close to that good.

More recently, UNiden had a MapTrax GPS system that had a special radar detector add-on, they showed it at CES 2008. I don't know what ever happened to that though because there's not a lot of recent info on it.

I remembered that they tried to separate the GPS from the RD to get around Escort's patent. Someone had video of it from SEMA or something. I couldn't remember what it was called though. I'll see what I can find out from my friend at Uniden.

Uniden's detector lineup, back when they made them, rated right up there with other top-notch brands such as Cobra and RMR. In other words, they made pieces of cr@p that sets off other detectors.

Uniden did make good detectors back in the mid/late 80's.
The RD-9 was considered just a notch below the Passport, and the RD-9XL actually won a Car&Driver detector test.
With the advent of Ka, then "superwide" Ka, Uniden didn't keep up to its competitors. As well, it seems that the FCC requirement that all detectors be Part 15 compliant was pretty much the death sentence for them.

i have tested one once it sucks i hated it the range was poor and thats a big no no for me cant have bad range. the voice alerts were hard to here i got given it for fixing someones computer then i sold it for 5 dollars thats was all it was worth yep and they leak like hell give false alerts real bad. i would rather have a whistler R30 then a uniden.
they make good phones tho cordless ones

Well not exactly correct
The GPSRD was the 1st model to use any GPS in their radar detectors back in the early 2000's.
The FCC came out with a ruling concerning filtering standards (part 15) and Uniden could not meet those guidelines so they discontinued making them.
They were going to make a comeback last year with their GPS and radar detector combo. The detector was made by Attowave (same company that makes the RMR stuff)
The pre-reviews of the unit were not what they expected and then the economy took a dive. Subsequenly they put this on hold

Wasn't it SEMA where we saw that? I remember it was their answer to the Escort patent thing, requiring them to separate the GPS from the detector. According to my friend at Uniden, they haven't sold any RD since around 2003, and as Roy says, they have totally dropped everything with the economy tanking.
It's interesting that the GPSRD is still on their website six years after it was discontinued. But the Uniden website has always been chaos.
The RD business is highly competitive, with both the high end and the low end solidly dominated by major players. It hardly seems prudent to try and carve a niche in that market unless you have something pretty special.

Do you know when this GPSRD was made by Uniden. Looks interesting.
Back before fire and the wheel, I had a Uniden 3 Band Stalker RD. Worked pretty good for me. No Laser detection capability. Now it is retired.
I wouldn't mind having one of those Uniden GPSRD. Anyone know of anyone who might have one available?

I'll second that. Before Cobra was the menace it was today for detector falses, Unidens were the usual culprit. I've picked those damn things up from over a half a mile away before. Some of them were so bad that I'd get a full Ka alert when passing the car it was installed in.

I had a Uniden 777 for four or five years that seemed to work pretty well until one day it simply wouldn't power up any longer.
I only used it on the highway, but I never got pulled over when using it.

My first detector was a Uniden LRD2200 and it was a very nice unit. It had about 75% of the detection range of the V1, awesome for a budget detector, under $200... and VG2 undetectable to boot :) Lent it to a friend one day and he left it on his dash where a cop saw it (Ontario) :( the thing paid for itself many times over before that!

Around 6 years ago I used to run a Uniden LRD 767 in a work van I was driving. It actually saved me from a C/O k band radar at 1.5 miles away. Was I shocked, yes to say the least.:eek:

I am going to second the comment on the LRD2200. In the early 90's I owned a LRD2300 and loved it. I had several X and K band alerts at over 4 miles. In fact I once had a Ka alert at over 3 miles on a straight stretch HWY 6 hamilton to guelph. Easy to operate and user friendly. On the negative side I dont think at had any filtering for false alerts and I'm sure I upset more then one of my fellow RD users. I still have the thing, I wonder how it would do up against my STI?

I agree 100%.
The RD9XL was the last "good" Uniden. I liked how small it was, but the alert tones weren't anywhere near as good as the original Passport.

I agree, they made pieces of junk RD's, I was stupid enough to buy one in 1998.
I sold it to some kid for $40. :lol:
