View Full Version : Yet another GOL test

Hey everyone. Just got off the phone with happy@$$ and we both agree we should attempt to tests ALL KA frequencies against the top end detectors. yes, it will be a small test, but we are all curious to know how all the detectors do against the latest KA frequencies.

Nothing is offical as of yet, steve or jimbonzzz will have the final word...

CAn u guys pleaseeeeeee also test the detector's ability to detect laser from the rear under real-world circumstances? Particulary when mounted low on the dash, or up on the dash, and for the V1 and X50. I really would like to know these results.

And using regular small car, i.e Sethy's one, VS a bigger SUV.

We are going to keep this mini meaning simple. We all feel shortchanged since we never tested out the other two KA frequencies. This is all that we will do. We will test the V1 1.8, V1 1.7 (if Boomerman is kind enough to loan it to us), Escort 8500, Escort 8500 X50 rev 5, and the RX65. We are probably going to sneak in an X band test as well to see how the V1 1.7 fairs since it has a bigger horn. I need to touch basis with Jim first before anything is final

You guys ROCK.

Thanks for running this "mini" test.
(it aint so mini if your leadfooting and the po po's are hiding ahead, painting cars w/one of the untested KA's)

Speaking of KA, what might causes KA false on X50 rev 5??

Thoughts? and/or is there a link to previous discussion?

KA falses on the x50 can come from other leaky detectors.

As for doing rear laser detection tests, I am sure that can be arranged. That wouldnt take up to much time on the fact we wouldnt have to be testing jammers

Rear laser? This would mean you have alrady passed the cop where he is hiding, and he first hits you at close range.

Unless I am missing something, a detector would provide you with absolutely NO protection from this. Even if you could count on the detector to alert to every rear laser hit, they've almost certainly already got a speed reading since it is close range, so you won't have any time to slow down.

Even with a jammer, you are probably screwed, except in some VERY limited circumstances, such as if you are using an Antilaser in the rear, or a Blinder against PL3, or a ZR3 against LA or PL3.

Jim

Dilip

Jim

I know that you would most likely be screwed under such circumstance, but suppose you get lucky and you pass by the cop very fast, therefore he can't target you at such a close range, and you have veiled lights & plates, there might be a small chance u could get away with it.

But any how i was just curious if a detector would actually alert under real world circumstances.

theresa
11-03-2005, 08:41 PM
^If your going THAT FAST, aren't most cops going to operate under "pull him over now, ask questions later"?

Dilip
11-03-2005, 08:43 PM
In Hong Kong they can't give you a speeding ticket without proof of your speed.

anyhow.....i was just curious if detectors will pick up rear laser since they do have that rear lens.

sethy
11-03-2005, 08:45 PM
I personally would like to see the rear laser tests. an 04 cavalier with veil and maybe a blinder or AL6, and there is a chance you'd get away with it...

jimbonzzz
11-03-2005, 08:50 PM
Al6? Very likely.
Blinder? Maybe if the gun is a PL3 or LA Stealth.
Detector? You better hope the cop has parkinson's disease.

Like the other guy said maybe you all can get a hold of some other frequency radar guns. Instead of the Genesis maybe a Stalker or MPH Industries as well. They use the MPH Python here where I live. So if you all can get those 3 different brands of radar guns.....33.8 34.7 and 35.5 then we will see which detector can detect which frequency better! 8)

Yes, Sethy, pleaseeeeee do the rear laser test because in Hong Kong this tactic is used by police quite often, and I"m sure in the future it will get increasingly popular. Thanks!

Do you know what model laser they use? (Lasercam? Digicam? etc) because it sounds to me that they use photo-LIDAR like they do here, and in that case the target range is not only very short (40-80m) in order to get the photo of the rear licence plate, but they also use a tripod, which makes it even easier and quicker to clock you... you wouldn't have a chance with detection only.
And in that type of set up (photo-lidar) its regarded as a very tough situation for jamming as well, since the distance is very short, its in a tripod, and the rear of the car is generally large very reflective.

They use LTI 20/20 and LTI Ultralytes.

As hand guns without photo? or in photo-Lidar version? ... the photo-LIDAR that uses de LTI 20/20 is the australian Poltech/Redflex Lasercam NT, and the photo-lidar setup one than uses the LTI Ultralyte gun is the Micro-Digicam.

I'm sorry, i dont really know which one.

HappyA$$, i understand how you may think it's a waste of time. It was just a request since I think rear laser will become more and more common in the future as Sethy also agrees. All u need is one gun and just test maybe 2 different detectors, it wouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

sethy
11-04-2005, 10:07 PM
As I see it it wont take that long at all. Just laser the vehicles as they are driving away for the radar tests. We do this 2 or 3 times, it would be quick and simple.

Could you please be kind an clarify for me why you really think REAR laser it's more achiavable than normal (front) laser gun (on a tripod)??? So far I've passed by dozens and dozens of laser speed traps, 100% targeting you from the front only (within 1,000 ft range) and it was no problem for the cops (sometimes just one, sometimes two) to pull you over and fine you on the spot...

LTI is going to be releasing a new unit which requires officers to target from the rear.

...laser from behind is going to be the new trend. laser detection is important, but no where near as important as laser jamming.

Dilip
11-06-2005, 10:17 AM
The reason i say this is because it happens quite often in Hong Kong.

They can hide, and you can't see the officer targeting you so there's no chance for those without a detector to see the officer. And i know even for those that have a detector, i'ts practically useless.

So, if there is NO problem for them to laser you from the FRONT and pull you over right away, why they should change their current tactic and adopt a new one :?:

Dilip

I know its not a problem from the front. But there are certain locations that would make targetting from the rear easier and more feasible than the front.

Also from the rear, it is much easier to lock on since the back of the car is much bigger and has more perpendicular surface area to the road. And like i said, the reason they'd do it from the rear is because in some circumstances, they can hide and you will have no chance seeing them, and no chance of escape even if you have a detector/jammer/

I'm not saying there's problem from the front. I'm just saying that they also do it from the rear in Hong Kong which is why i was curious about a detector's ability to pick up such shots.

You adopt a new tactic ONLY when the current one ain't productive no more... that's why Specter RDDs came out on the market, VG2 didn't do its job no more, right?
Maybe HK cops watch too much the SCIFI channel... and you too, cause you go along with them

Dilip, you should know that they probably won't be testing on Multanovas, which you confront in HK... :( They will be testing Ka band about 20 times stronger than Multanovas are. Rest assured, I tested my Euro mode V1 against Multanova and the results from the rear are surprisingly promising: I detected radar about 300 meters in advance, with previous V1 software only 20 -50 meters...

Carlos from Spain

Multanovas catch you from the rear but testing rear detection of the multanova on a detector is useless. One thing is rear radar detection, and another is front detection of rear oriented radar (descending) which is what you want to test for the multanova or photo-radar.

The reason is that multanova is facing to the rear of the vehicles but you approach the multanova with your vehicle with your front. And you need to detect it before you encounter it with your front detection. If you detected it from the rear its too late, you have gone past it and has got you. The problem is that since the radar itself is facing away from you, its tougher to catch the signal than if it were facing you (ascending). But the test for the detector should be sone as any other radar trap, front detection. No matter if its facing you or not (like photo-radar multanova). Only in instant on rear targeting radar gun traps you would want to test rear detection, which is a different case scenario than photoradar.

If they use photo-Lidar, then thats different. In standalone LIDAR guns traps (US) they shoot you to your front since they afterwards stop you, but normally in photo-LIDAR they target you from the rear in order to get your rear plate on the photo. But since you can't detect laser unless its pointed in your direction (unlike radar) you want to test rear detection in photo-LIDAR. But IMO useless to try to detect photo-Lidar since they usually target at 70m only, and you have already gone by it too, if you have not seen it then you will not detect it and slow down in time at that range.

Only now I understand what our HK friend was asking about... photo-LIDAR... where I live, Ontario, photo radar, the one with a van taking photos of any vehicle speeding, has been outlawed since 1995 (privacy issues), LIDAR showed-up in Toronto in 1996, so the photo-LIDAR combo ain't possible in Ontario... that's why, and because Dilip did not mention photo-LIDAR as the main subject of his persistent questions, I believed that he doesn't know what is talking about... sorry for that... and lucky me I don't have to worry about any photo-Radar/LIDAR!

Actually I am not even 100% sure if we have photo-lidar here.

all i know, is that for any kind of speeding ticket, the police must have proof they can give in court, i.e. a photo. Therefore I think that the laser guns here LTI 20/20 & ultralytes, have the ability to take a photo of your car also with the speed reading.

But thats besides the point actually.

The point is that in HK, they use front and rear laser. So i was just curious if detectors like the V1 & X50 can detect rear laser.

I've been to lots of traffic trials in Toronto, cops never ever bring any evidence with them besides their own notes they are taking right after they issued the ticket... their presence to the trial is enough to prove that they were right issuing the ticket... unless YOU, the defendant, can prove in court that they were wrong and convince the judge that you are innocent and they were wrong issuing you the ticket, you will be convicted of speeding and automatically the ticket will show-up in your driving record and stay there for 3 long years... but if the cop doesn't show-up to court during your trial and you, the defendant, are in court at that time, you are free to go and all charges are dismissed... two different countries (or province for Ontario), two totally different judicial systems

Yep, it sure does .. at least with falses -- I haven't had a real incident yet.
However I've gotten a few laser falses from the rear, usually from brake lights on certain trucks or the laser navigation systems that are popping up, as well as some neon signs.. so yes, it does work, although I've never had a real encounter with rear-laser..so..assuming it works with falses, it works with real laser? Hope that works for ya :)

I know many people have asked for much already and this is supposed to be a "mini" test. But since you are already testing radar on the big 3, is there any way you could also test rear radar detection for the big 3 detectors? I know only the V1 has a rear antenna but I think its sneaky when LEO's instant on from the rear and creep up on unsuspecting traffic, I would like to see how well the detectors pick up the signals (with as little "reflection" from other large objects if possible)

Please? :)
