View Full Version : MPH Radar frequencys and POP question

I work at a Ford dedalership and we sell the majority of the patrol cars for the local towns and counties. We also service most of them and I can say that I have seen nothing except MPH radar units in all of them. I can vouch for at least 2 Bee III units with POP (most of the rest are older MPH units, not sure of model). I have seen X band used in one unmarked that I assume was an older handheld units.

Now for my questions. Do all MPH KA units run on 33.8? Also is there a set frequency on K band that MPH uses?

If they are on the same frequency this brings me to my next question. I run POP on on both my V1 and my 9500ci due to the Bee III units. I've never been hit, but am afraid to turn it off. It is my understanding that POP mode can hurt performance since it has to check the POP frequencys more often hurting scanning of the others. However, if all the radar in the area is on those frequencys, wouldn't that be a good thing and shorten reaction times?

Toronto Police, where I live, uses ONLY MPH radar units (BEE III in C/O mode only) as traditional radar, obviously you know laser is a different animal, all MPH units are around Ka33.8, also in my area no need to use POP feature, that's pretty much for legal areas

PS A very easy way to find out about the freq of the guns your local police is using: run your RD in the tech mode or whatever you call it when you can read the freq of any (real or false) radar alert! I keep it in tech mode, anytime, anywhere!

POP is used in 33.8 frequency i believe. All it is is a super fast quick trigger burst in 32ms.

I know the POP guns run on 33.8, but what about the other model KA band MPH radar units which account for the majority of them in the county (only seen 2 of the Bee III units so far). I can chase them all in SPEC mode to verify, but that sounds like a headache. I figured someone may already know if they are all 33.8 or not.

Laser currently isn't an issue, I remember them buying a LIDAR unit back when they first hit the streets, but none of them use anymore if they even still have it. I have never had a laser alert in my area (except a cell phone tower that set off my V1.). I've been hit on the road, but right now I'm more concerned with my home territory where I do 98% of my driving.

There are NO stand-alone POP guns, POP is one of the features all, or at least the latest, MPH radar units are built with...

Only Z-25, Z-35, BEE III and ENFORCER have the POP feature built-in...

Again, each PD uses its own radar guns, unless there are people in this forum that live in your area, it's up to you to find out what guns are used around you, my STI very easily allows me to do that that's why I know all the guns used by local cops and the ones on the open road.

What is POP Mode?

POP Mode is a feature that was introduced by MPH Industries in their latest radar guns, designed to defeat radar detectors. POP acquires a vehicle's speed by sending out a quick burst of radar. This burst was so short that detectors available at the time of POP's introduction did not alert to it, either due to a sweep rate that was too slow to detect it at all, or due to the short burst being filtered out as a false alert. Fortunately, many radar detector manufacturers have since added POP detection capability to their latest radar detectors.


Radar guns that currently have the POP feature:

MPH BEE 3 = 67ms, K or Ka-Band
MPH Enforcer = 67ms, K or-Ka Band
MPH Z25 = 16ms K-Band
MPH Z35 = 16ms K-Band

Many of the latest detectors can detect 67ms Ka-Band POP reasonably well.

The operator's manual for these guns cautions that "Information derived during the POP burst is non-evidential and to be used for advisory information only...citations should not be issued solely on information derived from the POP burst.

There's plenty of info on POP and the current production MPH guns. I was just hoping that someone might have experience with the older models to see if 33.8 was a standard for the older guns or if MPH has used other KA frequencys over the years.

MPH has only used 33.8 GHz for Ka, even on older Ka-capable guns like the BEE-36.

Thanks, that's exactly what needed. That should mean that 33.8 is likely the only threat I should see in KA (gotta verfy what the troopers are using yet but all local units are MPH).

Now I just need to find out if POP on makes the 33.8 get scanned more often or not. I think I'll try asking on Escorts forum and see if they respond. Assuming with POP on it has to check 33.8 more often, it would hurt responce on the other frequencys, but should make 33.8 quicker to respond. I don't know if this is true, but it sounds possible.

POP Test

For this test, we chose a straight 1000-foot course near our laser test course. This test was done on the third day, and there was NO Ka radar interference in this area like there was on the first two days. This test included 67ms K-Band POP, which we have never tested before. POP was turned ON for all detectors.

All three types of POP were tested. The following radar units were used:

MPH Enforcer - 67ms Ka-Band POP
MPH BEE III - 67ms K-Band POP
MPH Z-25 - 16ms K-Band POP
Each detector got five tries against each gun. Results are number of alerts out of five.

So, 16ms would be used in stationary mode since the guns are handheld. But the 67ms units can be stationary or moving.

So, 16ms would be used in stationary mode since the guns are handheld. But the 67ms units can be stationary or moving.You're right. I didn't describe that very well. The MPH radar units that are capable of moving mode use 67ms pop.
