Well i bought my escort 9500ix off of craigslist about 5 months ago and the thing works perfectly. Only problem is i have not been able to update it, which up untill now has not been a problem but i was just driving down 7th street today and the city of phoenix decided to take down their old red light cameras and move them. when they took them out i thought they were going back in the same places so i would not have to worry about it but now i sort of do. So i was wondering if there is anyone who lives in phoenix or glendale who would be willing to let me update my radar gun or can anyone tell me how to since i bought it used and i came with no wires or cds to do so., thx

You have to buy a subscription to the database from Escort. Once you do that they will send you a code to allow you access to the database.

All you need is the code and a USB cable. You can download the detector tools software to install the upgrade from Escorts website.

Yep. It's as easy as 1 2 3.

If you have one of the older 9500ix you will need a 12v power supply if you're going to update by your computer. If you have a laptop and USB cord you can take it to your car and use the power there.

On the newer models you don't need a power supply. Just the USB cord.

The new instructions changes information on page 26 of the owner's manual.
1. Connect a mini USB cable, (not included) to the Passport 9500ix
2. Connect the USB cable to the PC
3. Log on to Escortradar.com/download
4. Follow the online instructions

I have yet to register mine so I will soon find out how the download works.
I'm really impressed with the way this RD.

How to update firmware etc.

I did the 3-year subscription for my 9500ix. It was something like 29.95
There is a Firmware update, which I didn't download, and the weekly Defender database. The updates that I have seen are posted on Monday's, and the email they send on the following day (Tuesday) to let folks know about the weekly updates include which States are updated for that week.
The downloads therefore are for selected States for that week. If one doesn't do the download updates each week, whatever is missed will be updated the next time the download is accomplished. So lets say if one doesn't do any downloads for 2 months, then they decided to do one, the months that were missed will be included in the update.
When I subscribed, they sent me a code to activate the 3-year subscription. The new code was a one time deal. After that, I only need my email address and the serial number of the RD for weekly update downloads.
I'm using one of my camera USB cords that work for the 9500ix. I had a problem getting the connection between the 9500ix and the laptop - found out for whatever reason that 1 USB port doesn't work for this, although the same USB port works for anything else (cameras, wireless mouse etc.).

Re: Firmware update

I was going to do the update but it said I had a newer version and was trying to install an old version. I guess they haven't updated their wbsite yet!

Cheers .. Ben, OH

I had the same thing happen, so after that I deleted the Firmware download from my desktop. Read it happening to others also.
I'm thinking our RD's are up to the latest and the download is for older units.
The weekly Defender updates are a separate download and would apply to all units.

I wonder how long it takes for them to get something on the site to let folks know about this. And if ours is the most latest, then they should have the Firmware on the site matching it, being the most latest.

Bingo!

The latest firmware is being shipped on new units but is not available to download via Detector Tools yet. :o We should have new firmware posted early in 2010. If you are receiving the weekly camera update notification emails then you will receive an email when the firmware is available.
