I know i ask alot of questions here but im too curious about RDs.. I wanna know all the good infos about them so i can be good at it and help out other later.

My question is. IF you point your laser pointer at your RD.. will it go off? go off in laser...

no Laser uses an Infra red light for laser invisible to light
Some detectors will be set off by TV remotes

I think it depends on the laser pointer. I know the led lights from the tail lights of some vehicles will set it off. So my answer is somtimes. Someone else can give u a much better answer.

but if i point it at teh detector. will it like screw it up? like how it does to yoru eye?

The lasers used by police also use a laser thats pulsed. Like some one else said some remote controls do use a pulsed laser beam, but the beam is very short (LP). The pulses in most remotes wont even set off the detector.

If the laser is 904nm then it will!
laser are visible light rather than infrared although you can buy infrared lasers!
when uoi concider the power of a laser pointer to the power of the sun, the sun would more than likely damage the sensor.. but they made the device to withstand the sun.
laser detector use a photo diode detector which is a sensor which is extremely sensitive to police 904nm laser photons!
that is easy compard to the radar detecting part of the detector.

Interesting discovery, isn't IR laser a.k.a LIDAR supposed to be safe on the eyes? Which is why its monitored by the Food and Drug Administration and not the FCC.
What are the effects of laser energy on the eye?
The site of damage depends on the wavelength of the incident or reflected laser beam:
* Laser light in the visible to near infrared spectrum (i.e., 400 - 1400 nm) can cause damage to the retina resulting in scotoma (blind spot in the fovea). This wave band is also know as the "retinal hazard region".
* Laser light in the ultraviolet (290 - 400 nm) or far infrared (1400 - 10,600 nm) spectrum can cause damage to the cornea and/or to the lens.

it also depends on what class the laser is, obviously medical lasers are far much powerful than your class 1 laser in your cd player!
class 1 lasers are ment to be eye safe, or so they say!
laser pointers fall in this catagory, it may dazzle you but it should cause damage unless your constantly shining the beam in the eye for 5+ minutes, even then nothing may happen.

NO way will a laser pointer activate a detector even if it is 904 laser it will need to be pulsed.

My DishNetwork satellite remote control triggered the laser alert of my S2 8)
While playing with my new toy(laser range finder for golf , or bowhunting use), I found that it would set off my bel65 as well as all of the other detectors I have tried it on.

Yep, they run the same principal as a police lidar...sends a pulsed burst of laser and reads the return pulse.
SamuraiVM- Try pressing a few different buttons as some have different pulse rates for different commands....
Try sending a file or pic on a Cellphone using IR and put the IR port in front of the detector...this will surely set it off ;)
I have a video posted somwhere on here with a demo of that.

I used my RCA remote control to a 27 inch tv that I have. If you notice it has 2 led's that light up. I think it was the only one that I could get to set it off.

My DirectTV remote (Channel Down Button) sets off my X50. I noted that if i set the detector on the floor and turn the remote to a 10-15 degree angle it will pick up the IR pulse instantly.

Well, it takes a lot of tries to get an alert, maybe 20 attempts for 1 laser alert... try different locations (S2 and the remote), also we are talking about that remote with TWO little infra-red leds, right? The remote MUST have TWO leds, the ones with just one won't trigger the laser alert...

Panasonic remote controls (for TV) are very good for testing laser detection. I can stand at the front of my car with the V1 in the windshield and it will easily detect the remote!
BTW, the V1 will also detect the LED display on the BEL 985 at close range.

My logitech laser mouse uses a pulsed IR laser and sets my V1 off...

I also got two DTV receivers (the old one with HU card and a newer one with P4), I tried both remotes, nothing, then I tried the DishNet and its remote (with 2 leds) did the trick... but you gotta be patient, I think I tried over 10 times to get one alert, also I changed positions for the S2 and the remote... who knows, maybe my S2 it's a kind of a spoiled little kid :lol:
