Ok. Second road trip with the X50 today. Mounted it high this time and I had better warning distances.

However, the little unit really sniffed one out today. I was driving on a rural stretch of highway with a ridiculously low speed limit of 60. I didn't want to push my luck in a company vehicle so I was doing about 70. I mainly brought the X50 along to get more windshield time with it.

Anyway, this young thing in a Honda Civic passes me doing about 85. Later, she is about 1/2 mile ahead and rounds a curve in the road and goes out of sight. About two seconds later I get two quick Ka "brap braps" from the X50. I get off the gas and slow down.

I start rounding the curve and lo and behold a Texas DPS is coming from the other direction and he locks on to me at close range (less than 1/4 mile).

My old Vector 940 would have never sniffed that one out.

Yep! I'm starting to trust it a little more.

You will experience this many more times. You can trust this unit. Try using the unit in all three filtering modes and see how sensitivity is affected. I have settled on autosensitivity mode.

The X50 lost my trust. I have noticed recently after being around a lot of Ka constant on traps that MY X50 (3rd one from Escort BTW) would provide me last minute warning when the cop was hidden on my side of the road with the Ka antenna facing the same direction as me clocking people from the back. If that had been an instant on trap like I find in Maryland I would have had a ticket for sure because the detection range sucked so bad it wouldn't have detected the cop clocking the other people ahead. X50 seems to only perform SLIGHTY better than my orignal 8500 ONLY when the radar souce is ahead and pointed in my direction. Just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I drove through the same Ka trap twice, but the second time I took down the X50 and put the 8500 up. The original 8500 detected the Ka WAY before the X50 did. The X50 is also horrible when it comes to radar from the rear or anything off axis for that matter. Twice the X50 let me down in a radar sitution the orignal 8500 would not. Never had any constant on close calls with the original 8500, but the X50 has let me down and I will be sure to ebay it. Maybe I have a "factory freak" original 8500 that performs better than other 8500's because this is my 3rd X50 and I think it's crap except for radar directly ahead facing the front of my car, but in the real world this isn't the only speed trap. Speedzones only tested the units with radar in front pointed in the direction of the detectors, that is why I believe the X50 performed so well in the tests. And even though my X50 beats my 8500 slighty on straight ahead radar, it is only by a couple of seconds. I'm gonna stick with my original 8500 it has better all around protection. I guess I will ebay my X50 and try different detector in the near future.

I hope that my wife gains trust on her new RX65. She used to have an RD850

..its instant-on trap..not constant on ..ur definity not gona get the same reading on an instand-on test dude. i was hit by instant-0n today (x instant-on) it picked it up around a bend then i saw the cop 1/10 mile away.....maybe if i turned around i would ge full alert reight next to the cop..but hey its instant-on....no protetion there!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a constant on Ka trap in VA cause they don't care to hide it over there.

Yes it was constant on, I verified that. Instant on is very rare in VA. I've only seen instant on in VA about 2 or 3 times. Most of my instant on experience is from driving in MD. Very dissapointed with the X50.
