Guys we will be holding a radar testing session on 1/28/06. Thus far we will be testing the Escort DSP (1991), Valentine One, RX65, X50, STI, and some older ones. This will strickly be a radar test. We MIGHT sneak in a LIDAR detection on the STI to see if it is really improved on LIDAR detection. We should be able to nail this in one day. We will not be video taping do to time constraints. We will be taking plenty of pics though. Any equipment donations (loaning) would be greatly appreciated. This is what we need:
STI
Kustom KA gun
We are NOT making any money of this (like always), this is for us and the forum to see what is the best and for our education

How about getting the DF2 and the AL6 (and some of the older ones for reference) and do a new-jammer first contact as well? 8) 8)
* no videos needed for verification, just the reported figures, GOL already has a reputation of being honest.

May I suggest that the generations of CMI detectors be tested? I realize this may add time, but it will certainly clarify the apochryphal ranking of detectors. I have my opinions based on owning a flock of radar detectors (no GULs, though) and I believe the 2nd gen Escort DSPs have the fewest falses (from Cobras) and modern Ka sensitivity.
The generations:
Original Escort
Passport
DSP (Motorola)
2nd-gen DSP, including 4500,4600,5000,6800,7500.
7500S (?)
8500,X-50 are Motorola DSP.
I'll supply a 5000 and an original Escort if interested.

Sorry no laser jammer tests this time. But, we will do one in the future as soon as production versions of both of these jammers are in the marketplace.

We'll see what happens and how much time we have. No need to send your 5000, I might have a couple  I would be very surprised if the detectors you listed for "2nd Gen DSP" were even close to todays sensitivity on any band. But, maybe we'll find out for sure.
What do you know about the GUL detectors? Were't those early units by Beltronics or something?

Cool. Imma lil confused. From the 2005 GOL shootout. The k,ka,x test that shows the mark of each detec. I see the V1 was at the top of each graph how many feet was it from the gun to where yall marked the detector reading?

It says at the bottom of each chart approximately how far it was from the first cone (Cobra) to the gun. You can add up all of the distances and figure out about how far away from the gun it was. But, it won't tell you too much about performance. That was specific to our test situation, every situation will be different. The purpose was to compare the performance differences between the detectors, not to get a distance from the gun.

I suspect there are differences between the 2nd-gens in that the case sizes differ quite a bit. At one time, Escort claimed the 4500 and 5000 were the same internally, although I doubted that all along as one has an LCD driver and a spectral display v. the conventional discrete LED display.
I find the 5000 to have Ka sensitivity roughly equivalent to the BEL 940 or 960 based on a stationary "your speed is" Ka sign in a nearby town. This surprised me as well. The V1 is better, of course. The BEL 940/960s are the Celerons of the RD industry as they appear to be 985s in sensitivity at a lower price point. My wife prefers the 5000 as it doesn't beep for Cobras---it merely displays "rejecting false signal".
The GULs were vintage BELs, IIRC.

Guys of LIDAR are looking for a couple of people who would be willing to send us their RX-65s to be used in performance testing later this month. This will be a perfect opportunity to have your own detector performance tested against other top units on the market, in some real-world speed trap types of situations. We also plan on testing USA vs INTL mode for Ka.
We plan to test the newer QL4G7M4 RX-65's against the older QL4G1S7 RX-65's to see if there are any significant performance differences. We are especially looking to obtain a couple of newer QL4G7M4 RX-65s, but a couple of the older QL4G1S7 would also help out too, to rule out any manufacturer variance.
If you would be willing to send us your RX-65 for testing, PM me or happya$$.
Jim
I will lend you guys my RX65 to help test these 8)

I'm hoping you guys are going to test with the original Passport 8500 and the Bel 985 / 995 for comparison, right? I'm especially interested in the comparison of Ka for the X50 and the original Passport 8500. Also interested in how much better the RX65 "really" (if any) is vs. the 985 / 995.
FWIW, the reporting of your last test's results was excellent. No BS comparison of features, etc. etc. Just pure detection results! A picture truly does say 1000 words, and the images with the detectors and distances was awesome...very concise and easy to interpret.

Will you guys have enough time to test everything in one day?
*RX65 - older hardware vs. new
*RX65 - Ka performance USA vs. INTL modes
*STi, RX65 & X50 Ka performance with POP on/off
*Full STi testing
*Everything else
I wish you guys had time to test different Ka guns as well: 33.8, 34.7 & 35.5 to see if some Detectors have better Ka performance with certain frequencies.

Now that Roy's going to be involved in the testing does this change the scope of what GOL will be testing on 1/28/06? Laser maybe?Roy was present at the last GoL in august and none of the scope was changed. The testing done depends on the time available is my bet.

Yeah tell me about it...this one had the ant. inside the unit. I took it out and length'n the cable so I could place it outside the car. Also I has just a kustom signal K band ant. I constructed a switch when I work for Radio Shack and tapped into the pwr to trigger it on and off to play with distancing detectors and to play with others that come screaming by me with detectors. A recent mention about the new STi having increased Ka falses due to supposedly crap detectors, would it be possible to experiment and see if that is the case. Becasue if that is so, that would be a disapointment, and of coarse a major factor in purchasing decision, if I am going to get phenominal range but then be hindered by frieghtening Ka alerts. From the discription it sounds like one could possible weed out the falses, weak Ka for a few seconds. Anyways just something I thought might be of interest.

Please test with/without POP mode enabled on the V1, STI, RX55, x50, etc... or if that's not feasible, WITH it enabled, assuming people want maximum protection.
If you have some time, see if the 3.826 V1 picks 16ms-K better than before also..and if it does alert in l and L mode when range is maxxed..
When it came time to do our detector tests, time was short and we knew that we wouldn't be able to be as thorough as we would have liked.
We are going to test every frequency. There will be no video this time or POP testing so time should not be an issue.

Hey happy. I know you guys are getting inundated with requests, but can you do a quick check and see if radar and laser signals are effected by putting it behind the little black dot sun screens you see above the rear view mirror. I can’t get a clear answer on this? Thanks :D

Yeah it would be cool to see the X50 KA range with POP on vs. off, and with x(and or) K band off. (granted you probably wont have that much time)...But POP on vs. OFF could be good.

I know you guy's are all booked up next weekend for so many testing procedures and I can hardly wait for the results but......because Bel/Scort uses a narrow antenna system that causes less false alarms or does not see anything on the sides I would like to see a test against the wide V1 antenna on hills and corners, LEOs favorite hiding spots.
Even if it is not your turn to be shot you need all the range that you can get to pick up that vehicle in front of you (rabbit) that might be shot.
Another favorite that only Car & Driver does is detecting range with radar in steady and instant on modes with the detector units filtered and non filtered.
This should have no or very little affect on K band and especially on Ka band. Many units have failed this in the past.
I actually asked Roy if SML could do this test for 06/05 and Roy responded that Carl would not do this test. Makes me suspicious.
I know that time is crucial but this is something that I would like GOL to test in the near future.

I think that a lot of people have the wrong idea about what the size of the horn antenna will do, such as the "tunnel vision" people talk about in reference to the Belscorts. A larger horn will provide more gain, but will also make it more directional. It shouldnt make it any easier to pick up signals from the sides, if anything, the opposite is true.
Jim
ES13Raven
01-22-2006, 02:12 PM
because Bel/Scort uses a narrow antenna system that causes less false alarms
Just because the V1 uses a larger than average horn, that doesn't make the Bel / Escort horns "narrow" or small. If anything, they are standard or larger than standard. The V1 is definitely not the standard in the industry to measure everything else against.

The effort you put into these thing is astronomical. Many of us have no clue of how much stuff is involed in each of yalls testing. Months of planning. Truely amazing!!!!!!!!!

Wow can can I say we had a GREAT turnout and I have a lot of people to thank. First I would like ot thank all of the forum members who sent their units to be tested. This is a GREAT way to know that we have RETAIL units. I would like to thank Roy for driving a million miles to come to Ohio, buy the food for the cookout, lend us his equipment, and completely staying out of our away and not interfering with our testing. Once again Roy is TRULLY a GENUINE AWESOME guy. It is great to have a great friend in Roy! I would like ot thank our team and participants for contributing anyhting they could to make this a great experience. It is SO NEAT to meet people from the forum. I would like to thank the Sheffield Village PD. This department was EXTREMELY professional, friendly, and even participated! I was in awe that they were that professional after all of the things that I have read! They were AWESOME and I look forward to seeing htem in April! The best part of all this guy is that we found AN AWESOME new LIDAR test site that is about 2500' long. No traffic, beautifull area! A LOT of hard work went into this and we learned a lot once again. The April event should be KICK A$$.

It was necessary to trim-down the range, so that the detectors wouldn't alert for the full length of the course. To accomplish this, instead of shooting the radar straight down the course, we decided to angle it across the road
b b bbb b bbb but why sir?
I think that just adds more ambiguity, you mean to say that all detectors alerted to the full lenght of the corse otherwise?

If the radar was pointed straight away the course was not long enough. New Jersey troopers angle their cruisers this way to cut down detection ability of detectors on their MPH K55 units

I think the results are quite telling, especially Ka wide/narrow, plus seeing the difference between guns, but then again no surprise given the sweep of the oscilator, the middle 34.7 will be the longest rang, thank goodness my FHP troops use that alot.

I worked in Jersey for 3 years and that is exactally how the JNSP use their radar and now PA has been doing the same latley. This methos is quite effective for the LEO's advantage and is quite a challange for us.

I am sure others will be disappointed aswell, although the encouraging words of quality control from the VIP tour, it is scary that RD can differ quite alot. If in doubt send it back for a QC evalutation, others have said they believe their units were returned performing better from getting "repaired".

Wow! Nice work!!!! I am disappionted in the Bel RX65 Ku-range but then again I have never seen a Ku gun....I also had a feeling that the Beltronics would dominate 35.5 and 33.8 Ka they have those frequnecies on lock down....You'd be amazed with the range I get with my 995 on local PD handheld Talon. It's really hard to declare a winner! I think alot depends on what KA radar gun you plan on seeing the most!

Now if you try to combine these results with that of the previous GOL test... such as the non X50 vs X50, where the although also a slight curve to the test site road, the non X50 dominated the new X50. But in this case with a different setup accross the strieght road, there was no difference.
Well, next time I am sending my old bel 985 and I am buying the fellas a round of drinks for the hassle.
The bottom line of this testing has revealed that.
1. Ka narrow is better then wide mode.
2. You performance will vary from one detector to the next.
3. STi is only worth it to those that live banned areas.

DAM!
We dont know about the STi laser detection, with all the fancyness, we can assume its better, but then again we thought the STi was going to blow everything away with Ka performance, we were wrong. Back to my poijnt it looks as thought hte STi is only worth it to those that drive in banned areas.
EDIT
Now although the rx65 seem to be ontop of the STi, the STi still had great performance, so those that need the stealth and want to py for it, it is there choice in determining the extra value/expense.

Seems people owning all of the various models tested are a little disappointed in one way or another. Overall though as a V1 owner I'm not unhappy at all. Actually I wouldn't trade the 3.826's results for those of any of the others, and the laser has yet to be tested and of course the V1's got its other unique features. Yeah, I'm happy.
Detection on the other units was overall pretty darned good though; if all you want is to detect radar, most of 'em will do an OK job.
What's with that Ku range comparison though? V1, 2700 feet, RX65, 172 feet...? Are these the only two units that can detect Ku? Is it coming to the US anytime soon?

The V1, Bel RX65, and Bel V995 all detect Ku plus some other Bel detectors used in europe

No (in the US) it really doesnt seem like it will be an issue for a long time to come... if it ever becomes an issue here.

GOL:
For Ku band, we used a 13.450 GHz oscillator, since we didn't have an actual Ku radar unit available for the test
Although it was not a focused radar gun, the V1 seemed to kick aZZ sort of speak. As said before the Ku wave form is so long that detecting it should not be a problem, just like X band. Although disapointing none the less.
Hats off to V1 for still being the most well rounded RD detector out there. High priced, but that value decision is up to the consumer.

Buttons on the top let you press them without dislodging the unit from a velcro mount on the dash...? But they sure don't help with a suction cup mount or a visor mount.
Well the thought of having the buttons on top was to allow you to grab the unit as it was mounted on the center location on the windshield. As long as you are not hitting large bumps in the road to yank it off the WS.
Buttons located on the front requires the unit to be thicker, as some companies were keeping them thin. Also units like the Whistler uses roughly 5 buttons unlike (3)Escort and (1 technically)Valentine.
My Bel LR unfortunately, I use the visor mount, I dislike it sometimes if I have too close to the left corner of my visor it powers off.
