View Full Version : Cops pulling cars over without setting off my RX65

I've seen quite a few instances where a police crown vic pulled over (in action) a speeding vehicle ahead of me without setting off my RX65. I'm assuming he did not clock him with a radar gun at all.
Are the cops allowed to pull people over without accurately clocking their speed with a radar or lidar device?
On the way up the mountain to my university are usually young drivers going 30-40km/h above the limit. And I witnessed this poor guy getting pulled over on the first day of school... without even using radar...

I'm pretty sure they can pace you, and if they feel you're over you'll get a speeding ticket, this happened to a friend of mine on Highway 401.
I heard its easier to fight those in court.

They can do all sorts of things:
Pacing, VASCAR, Lidar (laser often times will not set off an RD/LD when a vehicle infront is the target [lets say from a overpass]... and then chaser cars are used).
Officers can also pull you over for visually going faster then the speed limit...they are trained to approximate speed just by using their eyes, so they may pull him over based on that...maybe not be able to give him a speeding ticket...but could pull him over none-the-less.
He could also be getting pulled over for something other then speeding:
Improper lane change
Incorrect use of turn signal
Crossing a double solid
Not obeying a traffic control device
Exhibition of acceleration
Exhibition of deceleration
No seatbelt
Light(s) out
Non inspected/registered vehicle
Wreckless driving
Public endagerment
Etc etc...the list goes on....but all those and hundreds more could be a citation without the use of speed measurement equipment.

Considering that you were using an RX65, it may well have been lidar. RX65s are notoriously bad against lidar.
Smart money's on VASCAR, though.

Well, the cop car was moving all the time. It came up from behind me, sped up, and pulled over some speeding vehicle ahead.
I don't think lidar units can be used when the cop car's moving

Mobile lidar is still in prototype form, I believe, if it's even that far yet. Professor Jim?
Regardless, it was either pacing or VASCAR.
