Hey guys, I just got a inexpensive radar detector drom radioshack(22.1697). I am surprised to see no reviews on cheaper radar detectors! :!: Can any one throw some light on the specs of this detector? I want to gradually upgrade the detectors as I am relatively new in this field.

Wow,
I think you may have insulted just about everyone in here with that statement/question.

Can you still get your money back if you return it?

I got it for $35. Is it not even worth spending that much money? I could afford only that much at this time.It saved me a ticket already in cleveland, so it has payed for it self, rest all is a bonus! I just want some details from someone who has used it.

zookybeanz, I don't know anything about this radar detector but honestly I bought a 40 dollar radar detector before and it really didn't work all that well. Usually most of the time I could see the cop about the same time my detector did

Sorry if I sounded harsh zookie.
Welcome!!

I just think it's our duty here to educate you about the dangers of inexpensive radar detectors.

I started with a cheap Cobra too. (only had x & k band!)

As an experienced radar detector user for almost 20 years, I would suggest you return your radio shack 22.1697 as soon as you can and scrape up enough to buy a decent detector. If you can save $200 you will be able to choose something decent and you won't regret spending that much money.

Welcome to the forum!!!

I know people will tell you to but the 3 most expensive detectors on the market, simply cause they oar the best, The V1 being the best!!

Anyways if your going to be on a budget, A really good detector FOR THE PRICE YOU WILL PAY is the Whistle Pro 58!!

You can get one from Roy For $94 and you get most of the Acessories, So I would really say that the Pro 58 is they best detector for the people on a budget.
http://www.radarbusters.com/products/whistler/pro-58.asp

OR if you can spend a little more I would go one step up to the Whistler Pro 73!!!

Roy sells it at 144.99 another good buy for the money, plus the Pro 73 has a Blue LCD display, the Pro 58 is just Lights behind a letter!!

http://www.radarbusters.com/products/whistler/pro-73.asp

Stay away from Corbra and radioshack, Just to give you an Idea about how bad Cobra's really are, the Pro 58 @ $95, has better range then the
Cobra XRS 9700 Model Curently the top model for Cobra @ $139.95.

Here is a link to the Guys of LIDAR Testing to prove that previous statement
http://www.guysoflidar.com/shootout05/radartesting.html

You will soon know who the GOL guys are, then you will love them like everyone else on the Forum, For there NO BS policy when they do testing on any counter measure against Radar and LIDAR.

LIDAR is the real name for Laser gun.

Hope this is what you are look for!!

Welcome to the Forum!!!

Excellent!

Even the BEST detectors WILL let you down sometimes, so why not give yourself the best protection possible?
Keep saving those jing dingles and you will have at least half a chance against the men with guns hiding behind the bushes and over the hills.

Welcome to the forum. If I had info on this "radar detector" I would gladly pass it on. With theknowledge that you gain here you will want to look into the possiblity of UPGRADING pretty quickly.

In the meantime enjoy!

OK I had to go find this thing. It appears to be from what I read on the RS site that this is a "mini" (small footprint) detector. I have to admitt for the price you can't go wrong, if you think about it people waste their time and spend MORE money on a lower performer RD (no offense to those). But honestly I might go down to the stor and buy it for fun, I think I can scrounge up $39 dollars, would be interesting to see, hell I can even return it.

EDIT

Not sold in my state, bummer.

GOL should teat this one out just to prove a point wether it has any range what so ever, would be interesting to see, it looks to be based on a Bel, isn't RadioShack in bed with Bel? It has the voice alerts... perhaps it is the Bel kind after all?

Radio shack has been in baed with almost everyone in the detector business (except Escort and Val). As a Ex- RS employee I know this. Radio Shack has unbadged units. Radio Shack has renamed Bel 945i, 845STi, Whistler 975, Whislter 1585, Whistler 1545 etc etc. Last I recall be fore leaving Early Warning, Cobra and some Whislters were last to be used.

I "owned" the renamed Bel 845STi, 945i Whislter 1585 and currently the Whislter 975. I have cracked them open and verified this.

Well, if nothing else you got a good price on it. That used to be their $100 unit. I'd say for $35 you'll get your money's worth.

That one is one model below the one the original poster got. I owned one like the one in the picture. It went back on the second day of ownership. I got pulled over one day, went and bought that detector ($80 at the time), and the next day the cop was back in the same place. To my horror, I saw him pull out after a car with his lights, then got a very weak, brief K-Band alert. He'd obviously already clocked the car and was going out for the chase, and it didn't alert to that. Pretty poor in my book. I'd feel a lot safer with a Whistler 1730 on the dash for $40 than the 22-1696.

What was bad, when I worked for RS they annually do their meeting and show CS reports on what to do/not to do. One was on a detector. Customer purchased one of these units, received a ticket for something like 14 over and wanted a refund.

Thats pretty bad. I would figure RMR to win the worst of detectors. Perhaps RS is in bed with RMR, stay away.

Guys this detector was on sale in radioshack and me being a imployee there got 30%off.so a $100 unit i got for $35!! not bad. Also it saved me a ticket in cleveland, it warned me with a KA signal of one bar stength at 1000feet and then at ka 9 strength at around 500 feet.the point is I was able to slow down in enough time as to not get a ticket! also i was leading the pack of cars! Other than that incident it has been warning me of doors etc. to tell the truth I havnt encountered a speed trap since. so I am still goin to give this unit a chance and save till i can get a top of the end detector
