Just thinking out loud
The idea I have had is to get a standard project box from Radio Shack and mount some high intensity leds in it along with a cheap, old, beat up radar detector in it. First take the detector out of it's case leaving only the circuit board with the leds and speaker on it disconnected (Small Cobra unit would do) and mount it inside. Have a small switch that will turn on the leds on the bottom of box and a hidden one for the rd in the box. You hardwire this and mount it on the ceiling of your vehicle above the center of the dash like a reading light. Since the RDD is not portable (It is mounted/wired in patrol car), it can't be a handheld unit that I know of to wand the car. When in VA or such, you flip hidden switch on and turn on non alerting detector. Cop nabs it with spectre, but when vehicle is looked at nothing is found unless he tears the project box apart. To him/her, it is simply a set of leds used for a map light and it can be demonstrated as such. For those who would ask why do it, the cop is dealing with you. How many people drive by as he/she wastes their time looking for something hidden in plain sight? How many have you just saved from a ticket? And if done correctly in the building, the burden of proof is on the officer to prove you had a radar detector in the vehicle. Want to go further?? Ham ops can have home-brew gadgets in the vehicle with the radio gear that can explain away things. Just my thoughts on confusion. Be well :-)
