There are basically two "groups" of frecuencies;

- north america: SuperWide Ka band, narrow Ka 33.8GHz, narrow Ka 34.7GHz, narrow Ka 35.5GHz, 24,150GHz K band, 10.5GHz X band, and 9.410GHz X band.

- EU: narrow Ka 34.3GHz, 24,125GHz K band, 13.450GHz Ku band, and 9.9GHz X band.

Barring the european X bands, which are rarely used anymore, the only detectors that will cover both sides are Bel550 (or previous version: Bel990) or Valentine One. As to a remote version, it would be the Bel975R, it covers all except the european Ku band which is used in some EU countries.

Two people that I know are using the Escort 8500, one of them told me that the it detects but in short range he told me that if you are driving like 200km you can't slow down to be clear but maybe because he has the old model and because he is driving very fast !! The other guy have bought many detectors most of them Bel and nothing worked better than 8500, so how come.

Is there a better than 8500 X50

If you're driving 200 or more Kmph i dont think any of the detectors will give sufficient warning to slow down to 100 or similar... the Bel 975R/966 are probably your best bets from what Carlos has said before, even better than V1 EURO mode.

I think will get the 8500 as both people used it.

Oh and now 34,3 GHz Multanova

I think one more difference between the Bel 975R and 966R:

- 966R has some anti-GSM chip that prevents mobile phones interfereing (Carlos)

- 966R ramps up the Ka band warnings quicker than 975R, but initial warning time is the same (Flits)

- 966R does not come with laser detectors by default, the 975R does, not that they are very useful anyway as they are not jammers

- 966R detects Ku band, while 975R detects X band instead. Both have Ka narrow and K bands.

- 966R tends to be about 2/3 to double the price of the 975R because Target jacks up the price.

I think I covered the best 2 remote detectors for Euro/Intl usage, aye? Perhaps I missed something or got something wrong?

The best INTERNATIONAL detector I ever came across was my Ex Mother IN Law. She was always BEEEEPING "SLow Down you SOB" You can have her if you want? :D

I do alot of travelling and lived in the UK and will be moving to Switzerland and I am hoping the V1 will do the job for me? From what I have heard is that the V1 should cover me in those countries?

For the 34.3GHz opf the radar you listed, I will arrange them from best to worst in three groups:

1º Bel966/Bel975

2º V1 Euro, Bel550, Bel330

3º X50, RX65

Would that be ok?

Now I have 975R + AntiLaser 6.5 and I would like to get Euro550 cause of 13.45 Ku band and 34.00 Ka band...

Suit yourself, but I'm not joking, you are purchasing a wideband only detector against a narrow band 34,3GHz radar. Not all Bel are the same so you can't judge one by others. There are wideband only Bel's like the RX-65 or Bel995, and their performance is no were close to a Bel550. The Bel550 is the only one along with the V1 that can be configured from Wideband tot narrow band.

As you can see the X50 hit 4.3 like the Rx65 and V1 in KA band.

If I remember correctly the question was about international RD and that you have "devil" at 34.3 GHz, and output power of it is 0.5mW-2mW (similar to Multanova 6F). Your best chances are with Bel 975R/966R or Euro 550, cause of Ka small band you can setup on these models (instead of superwide Ka).

All those tests were made for USA market and Superwide Ka, if I understood correctly!

So forget about 4.3Mi detection range and prepare yourself for 200m detection eaven with the best models (Bel 975R/966R and Euro 550) for multanova like radars...

966R is a remote unit (base unit and antena are separated) and also 966 doesn't come with 2 laser sensor (you can buy them as an option). Also 966R doesn't detect X band.
Euro 550 is for windscreen mounting and has all bands X,Ku,K,Ka narrow (you need that!) and Laser.

RX65? Not shure if it has specific european frequences. It is superwideband detector (33.4GHz-36.00GHz), but you need Ka smallbands: 34.000 / 34.300 / 34.700 / 34.360 and there is one new system in Europe called RAI-2002 at 35.5GHz. I would go for 550, but you can choose for yourself!

Hold on...

the Bel 996R has narrowband on 34.00Ghz?

Could THIS be the solution to the problem of the out-of-tune Muiltanovas at 34.200 (not covered by 34.3Ghz narrowband)?

AGAIN Dilip missed a photo radar Multanova last night... it was at 34.200Ghz according to my Spec display on the X50, his V1 EURO mode did not warn at ALL!

SO... perhaps the solution would be to enable 34.0Ghz and 34.3Ghz narrowband, which would catch these 34.2 and 34.1XXghz out-of-tune radars?

How much would this worsen the warning time/performance by enabling one more narrow band like this?

Yes it may be, cause Ka band is +/-100MHz so it would be 34.200-34.400 for 966 and Euro550.
My idea is to go with 975R (X-ON, K-ON, KaWide-OFF, Ka 34.360-ON, 35.500-ON,SWS-OFF, Laser) and BEL Euro 550 (X-OFF,K-OFF, Ku-ON, KaWide-OFF, Ka 34.000-ON, 34.300-ON)

Yes but I think it's not a good idea, cause there are more chances of fallsing between two RDs then limiting to needed bands. Less redundancies is better in this chase.

Maybe Carlos can fill us in on some technical details regarding this problem...

People have shown improved performance when using only one band for example, someone said they only have Ka, and the detection is outstanding, I believe New Zeland? If you want to cover everything, that would do it, and the antenass would be far away. The problem is the false alerts you are going to get with all those bands. For example,
- the 35,5GHz radars are only in Spain and if you open that band you will get 2 to 3 times more falsing. Some have also reported decreased detection range on 34,4GHz when the 35,5Ghz is open but that is not "proven".
- K band is imposible here because of the falsing in the cities, its crazy.
- X band is even worse than K band but you are not likely to enciunter one. Depends on were you are at, but there are many EU countries were they are completely gone.

So my recomendation is to combine a radar detector and an GPS warning system. This way you only open up the bands in the detector in which there are "movile" radars (tripods, cars, etc) in YOUR country and leave the stattic radars (Multanova cabins, gatsos, 35,5GHz RAI2002, truvelo, specs, etc) for the GPS since the GPS has no falsing (and has longer warning distances). That way you mainatin optimun detection range on the detector by using less bands and you eliminate flasing by using the GPS to alert for others.

Again it depends onthe country, and the sistems used, but this is the best combo for many countries.

If the frecuencies are on different bands, then there is no change for sure, at least on the 975/966. Enabling the K or Ku band on the 966 for example has no detrimental effet on the 34,3GHz detection range.

But I have had heard some people report that with two Ka narrow bands open they have had less performance as well, yet others report that they have had no change.

Depends if you want a portable o remote unit, and depends which radar types you encounter most in your area.

The reason few people have the V1 in Europe is becuase Valentine does not sell outside North America so to get a V1 in Europe you have to purchase through intermidiary re-sellers that inflate the price considerably making it not very appealing as a detector for Europe.

Ok if you have the choise to get one of them and the price is almost the same, which one you will get for yourself.

I sometimes spell the Bel966R as Bel996R because 996 is the model designation of the previous Porsche 911 model so I sometimes say 996 out of habbit, my mistake, I meant Bel966R.

So, we are all talking about the same one Bel966R I guess, since there is no Bel996R. And the Bel966 only has 34,3GHz Ka band.

Per the recent "Guys Of Lidar" test, the two units they tried for Ku got the following detection results:

BEL RX-65.... 172 feet
V1.... 2,700 feet

The V1 detected Ku at fifteen times the distance.

BTW, Carlos, I saw on the page: http://todoradares.com/web2006/detectores6.php there is a statement that Euro550 has Ka band: 34,000GHz, 34,360GHz and 34,700GHz, but on the Target's page: http://www.target-automotive.nl/wcms.php?wcms[id]=77 it says that it can pick up: 34.00 GHz, 34.30 GHz, 34.70 GHz.

So which is it 34.300GHz or 34.360GHz?

Also on the page: http://www.traveltech.hu/radardetektor.php?detektor=2& there is different thing, it states: 34.000, 34.300, 34.700 and 34.360!

More confusion!

So is it (34.300GHz or 34.360GHz) OR (34.300GHz and 34.360GHz)?!

As far as I have read, it is as written on Target's page: 34.000, 34.300 and 34.700GHz. Right?

Thanks!

For all practical purposes its the same thing really, it can be refered to as both ways.

34,360GHz is the actual frecuency at which the Multanova radars work at, and that should be the frec the detector should be tunned at.

In this case Bel does it a 34,300GHz but for practical pursposes is the same thing since in reality its not a set sole frecuency but rather a range of +/-100MHz. I.e. the Bel is tuned at 34,300GHz+/-100MHz (33,200-33,500GHz) and the Multanova works at 34,360+/-MHz (33,260-34,460GHz) so it still overlaps OK. This may be done since its said that when radars fall out of tune that they tend to do it downwards, their working frec tends to go lower, so by setting the Ka at 34,300GHz+/-100MHz on the detector instead of the 34,360GHz they have a better chance of catching Multanovas that can be slightly out of tune (eg. at 32,200GHz) by reaching a bit downwards in the frec spectrum. But thats all theories.

Sometimes its just refered to a 34,3GHz to abbreviate or even 34GHz. But they are all considered the same frecuency. But the 100% correct figure for the Bel is 34,300GHz as you say.

Just a small writing correction, 34,200-34,400GHz and 34,260-34,460GHz.

Dilip will be very interested in this, because his V1 on EURO mode DOES NOT warn to radars that fall below 34.2XX... if I recall, the V1 tunes +/-100Mhz from 34.36, hence it only goes down to 34.26Ghz... and as has been proven with the videos we took together, the V1 will FAIL to warn against Multanova photo radars below 34.26Ghz, while the X50 will warn as it is on wideband (and the V1 will also warn in wideband mode, but then it is the same as X50).

So... if indeed the Bel really is tuned at 34.30Ghz +/-100Mhz, then it will be excellent, because I've almost never seen a radar fall out of tune down below 34.200Ghz. I think I saw once 34.1XX (but it was a very high number like 34.19x or something) so I presume the X50 may not be that accurate so many it was just 34.200Ghz.

In any case, can someone confirm the Bel 975 is ALSO tuned like the 966 to 34.300Ghz +/-100Mhz? Or is the 975 tuned to 34.36Ghz instead?

I think that if your country has KU band, then u should get the V1. I have it and it is not bad at picking up multanovas, you can also have 34.36 narrow KA, and u have K band, and X band and KU, and excellent laser. If u want to buy in USA, this is the best option.

The reason people are saying 975R is better for KA is because it is a remote model and will give slightly better warning than the V1 against a lower powered multanova.

Thats why i said, only get the v1 if u need KU band, otherwise get the 975R.

For europe though the best is the 966R like carlos said, but i dont know why you don't want to buy in europe?

CArlos:
I can't believe i missed this thread. Why didn't you tell me earlier about 34.300 instead of 34.36 +/- 100??? This completely solves my problem in Hong Kong! If the 966R really is +/- 100 at 34.30 intead of 34.36 then it can detect my lowere frequencies multanova while the V1 cannot.

But like you said, the 975R's manual says 34.36 but not 34.30. How to find out if it is 34.30?

One strange thing to note though. The V1's website says 34.36+/- 100 for euro mode, however when i spoke to the valentine technician on the phone he said it will scan from 34.20 up to 34.46. But if thats the case why didnt mine detect the radar? Maybe the tech was mistaken?

All I know is that it states in the manual: 34.36GHz, so I am geting myself Euro550, cause of Ku band and 34.300 Ka band (out of tune Multanovas). Will use both RDs at the same time.

Laser detection is very good, I have mounted it as low as possible, at the bottom of the windscreen so AntiLaser and Bel signalize at the same time. Since I have mounted it I had like 8-10 laser hits and Bel warned me every time, also AL jammed the gun. :)

It's not a problem to mount it. I had a lot of space in front bumper, so its mounted just behind it and still have something like 15cm from end of the 975R's horn to the cooler. I have used special superglue (2 components) + some kind of double tape which is armored inside (don't know an english word for that, but it's used for fixing rear view mirror for the windscreen).
It compesates force between windscreen and a mirror and in my case RD's antenna and inside of bumper.
I don't think it can fall off so easily, anyway I hope if that happens the wire will keep it inside the engine bay....
Also I am planing to install front laser sensor behind the grill, but with full optical view...
When I mount it will make some photos and post them here.
Also I am doing a video of the RD+AL so I hape in a week or two you can see how it looks and works in real life.

For Euro550, when you go to setup, there is a band and freq. choice and there is: Ka 34.30 (as stated in the manual) so I guess that applies also to 975R as it is stated 34.36 in the manual.

About 966R I don't know, all I know is that in the manual it say's 34.3 GHz, so if it is, like Euro550, made for European market, then it should be 34.300, not 34.360, but I can't be 100% shure.

Hum... in fact the 966 manual calls it "34Ghz" so thats even more vague.

Maybe D.E.T. or Flitsservice have done any tests on these to know? Because if it really only detects down to 34.26Ghz then it is not going to warn against our out-of-tune radars at 34.210 and similar.

Actually, I thought the 966 and 975R are supposed to be virtually the same... perhaps THIS could be a difference?

Basically we really need to CONFIRM from some valid source with 100% certainty whether the 975R is +/- 100mhz @ 34.360 or 34.300 ghz?

Same goes for the 966R. As carlos stated, manuals may not always be accurate. If i tried to call up Beltronics, would they be able to tell me?

Good luck dude...it depends on who you get.

I emailed Target, Bel, etc. but STILL have no reply. I guess they don't care.

Actually, maybe ROY could help us, since he sells the 975R? Roy would be the man to clear this whole thing up as he no doubt knows more about this and has inside people who can answer?

Hum... in fact the 966 manual calls it "34Ghz" so thats even more vague.

For 966R in the manual on the page 12:
http://www.g-zona.hr/966_spec.jpg

I guess that for european market they make 34.300 and for us market 34.360, just a guess.

Last night me and nvr 2 fast went past four different tri-pod style multanova's all forward facing.

In two of the instances, his X50 did not alert until we were parallel or even past the multanova. But my v1 gave 8 seconds on one, and gave over 15 seconds warning on another. Very strange.

Why sometimes there is such a big differnece between the two detectors? Sometimes X50 can get 4 seconds and V1 can get 6 seconds. Sometmies X50 can get 0 second while V1 can get 15 seconds? Very strange. I know variables come into place but still, such a big discrepency?

I really wonder how the 966 will perform in comparison to the V1. Keeping in mind that the 966 is mounted very low down in the engine bay while the V1 is mounted high up next to the rear view mirror.

Oh....... we even took pics this time.... we got out of the car and went up to the multanovas.... will post pics in a separate thread later.

NVr2fast spoke to Target automotive's tech support on the phone. They said that the frequency range of the 966R is more than the 975R, therefore it would mean that it has a higher chance of picking up out of tune radars.

However they did not say anything about 34.300 or 34.360

If I were you, call Target and ask them in such a way to indicate that a wider scope would be bad, for example "well I want the narrower one because wider won't detect from as far" and see what they say

966 has 34.3 Ka ONLY! So how can it pick more the 975?! I also think it BS! We need someone at Bel to confirm the story....

So are they still same or are there any new models.

quote="Dilip"]that sounds like a multanova.
In that case, u'll be fine with a 975R, 966R or even V1, or the Bel euro 550.

dont get a x50 or Rx65, its useless trust me.[/quote]

you pay for what you get

either get a V1 or a Bel Euro 550

I've used both and both excellent but the V1 is better

Don't buy Target Euro550, or if you do: read what I passed through:

Euro550 is supposed to be the US 990i. And the 550 is its price - that is for sure
What they don't tell you when you buy Beltronics is that when something goes wrong during the so called Self calibration...it's money thrown through the window as Beltronics CANNOT repair its own product
I doubt that the self-calibration thing differs from model to model
I wish I had read some posts here before my purchase...

From my sad experience withe Target 550 - the ultimate international    RD - I've learnt that: For international:
1. Get the first one in the range with switchable bands - chose the frequencies the country you are driving in - they are available on internet
2. Like U, I'm not willing to waste big money (as I did for Beltronics) for merely the same thing so 150 $ is now maximum.
3. I say there is no best one: this depends on the area u are driving through, police and traffic radars and the way they use them. Unfortunately this means experience...

I'm sure there are some units around $150 -I've spotted already some :D that will suit me hopefully, not Beltronics though  .

So which are the $150 that will work.

 all will work.
I can tell you which are the $150 units but which one will suit you best, depends on factors I pointed out above. The point of a RD is to get a warning before PO gets the reading e.g. get some scatter from the radar. In some countries PO know RD are used as they are legal and 'fire' only when you are in their range. In such cases, even with Target Euro 550 and on X-band :D - you can get cought speeding if you are much more over the speed limit and if you don't brake fast.

What countries will you be driving in? If I have any experience in them I will share it with you.

I've been looking to a radar detector for quite a long time now. The thing is, the more I research, the more confusing it gets.

You seem to recommend the Euro 550 and the 966R. I've been veering towards V1 and Bel STi Driver myself. I almost bought the latter, but then I saw a review which said that it didn't have some band needed for Europe.

Most of the driving will be done in Estonia but as I might have to travel to the rest of Europe once or twice a year, then it should also function in other major European countries as well.

I read that one guy from Estonia bought the Sti driver, I will PM him to see if he has any comments.

I'm not sure of the exact scan range (+- ??MHz) of the V1 now in Euro mode (I read here that Valentine widened the range since talking in great lengths with some forum members) but I can confirm the V1 in Euro mode detects down to 33.790 (tested with STi in Tech mode against a BEE)

Olxter,

If you have Multanova 6F photo radar in your state / country, then the Bel STi driver wouldn't do well to detect it.

Olxter,

If you have Multanova 6F photo radar in your state / country, then the Bel STi driver wouldn't do well to detect it.

 Why would you say that???????
The STi detects all of Ka, without limitations. Sti tests conducted by various person shows that it has very good Ka range at 34.7, which is fairly close to the Multinova frequency.

jezza_aus
04-03-2007, 07:24 AM
You are missing the point.

The STi doesn't have a Ka narrow setting (the V1 does) therefore the STi does not do well against the 6F.

Do a search on this forum (Dilip, Carlos etc) and you will see.

SmaartAasSaabr

In effect the STI is probably the best Multanova detector when you are also needing full superwide coverage. But that "good" isn't very.

For Multanovas you tend to need a dedicated narrowband 34,3 GHz detector. The remote Bels tend to be good for that.
