Valentine vs. Solo S2

Hey, I'm new to this forum, and it looks like a great forum.

Up until yesturday I had an Escort Solo S2 for the past 2 years. Unfortunatly it was stolen from my car.

I really like my S2 and would get another one in a heartbeat, but I was also considering getting a Valentine One. I really liked the cordless feature of the S2, but I realize that this decreases performance. I was hoping that you guys could help me out ASAP because I feel I'm driving around naked without a detector right now. Thanks

I would recommend the solo. if you are looking for preformance, I would go with the v1 or the x50. if you def want the cordless option, then the solo is the best cordless detector out there.

Let us know what you decide, have you researched any of the detectors yet? Where do you live at? What is their main band that they use? (K, KA ect) Do you drive mostly on the highway or are you an all around driver?

Answer some of these questions and we can help you better.

I live in Massachusetts, however I do not know what the main type of detection uses in Mass is. I would consider myself an all around driver. I did alot of research before purchasing my Solo 2 years ago, however I have not done any research since. I do not need to cordless feature but feel I might miss it if I purchased a corded detector. I never had a problem with detection with my Solo (once got nailed by laser, luckily he pulled the guy next to me over). Just wanted to know what you guys thought.

Except that laser detection on the V1 is more sensitive than the X50, which is especially important if you intend to make the most of passive countermeasures like Veil. Doubly so if you intend to mount the detector high on the windshield.

Having the v1, I have gotten 2 prewarnings. One was about 2 seconds, and the other the officer was shooting the opposite traffic. My own personal experiance, I would take the veil and lasersheild that continously works, over a possible prewarning.

I recommended the x50, veil, and lasershield for the PRICE of a v1.

Fair enough. I guess it depends on what one feels like spending. I would never suggest that the X50 is a poor choice.

having said that I prefer something with a cord just so I don't have the battery worrying issues.

The X50 is a SOLID choice. I own one along with the V1 and I like them both

I think I would prefer the better performance of the corded detector. While I own a couple of V1's, I wouldn't rule out the RX65 or the sweet new STi. I think a new STi will be on my shopping list as well.

A proper hardwire on a corded detector should basically neutralize the appeal of a cordless...

I realize that although NO cordless detector is as good as a corded one, in the past 2 years of using my previous Solo S2 it never missed a signal that I needed it to pick up. Until that happens, I'm sticking with it as I love the cordless versatility. Now I have to just drive carefully until it arrives.

I think it is a very good idea for you (if you like and know a detector) inside and out, and it has always served you... to stay with it. I find it better then 'jumping' from detector to detector trying to learn new audio alerts and little 'quirks' between each RD.

As stated the Solo 2 is the best cordless out there... and its a very worthy detector.

That information comes from Valentine Research. I haven't really seen any extensive tests on the S2. Maybe the GOL can fully test its abilities at the next GOL radar shootout. :wink:

I don't believe the Solo capabilities info came from VR. I think VR was quoting other tests that have shown that cordless doesn't have the abilities of the corded detectors. It just makes sense. The cordless detectors have to do the job of detecting and trying to conserve battery. So it is somewhat a compromise to get user friendly features with decent performance.

As a test of the V1 (to basically eliminate any potential electrical problems in my old car as the cause), I hooked up the V1 to a 9V battery. I forgot what I did; but basically I figured out which wire in the phone jack was the +V and which was the -V and spliced a cheap phone wire to a 9V battery. It worked. Can't say for how long since I only tested for a few minutes. Maybe it will kill the 9V battery really quick, no idea. But you can surely make the V1 cordless with a 9V power source.

With modern rechargeable batteries being smaller and holding more, it wouldn't suprise me one bit if Valentine or Escort/Bel come out with an updated cordless detector that uses a NiMH or LION battery... or being Mike V, maybe he'd just make it an included feature.. like a built-in LION battery that charges via the corded power :)) and can be used either corded or cordless :) (and doesn't turn itself off to save power)..
