Best thing since Velcro!!!

Ok folks, I've just discovered a new substance that can be used for mounting stuff in automobiles, and I have to say it is the best stuff ever invented!

What I'm talking about is 3M's Dual Lock Fastner Strips. These strips look a bit like and function like Velcro, except that the adhesive is much better. In addition, you don't have one hooked side and one fuzzy side...both sides are hooked!!

Thats right! Both sides consist of tiny hooks with little spheres at the ends, when you push two of these identical pieces together, they make a "snap" sound and then are locked to one another. The benifit over velcro is that the hold is much stronger, and more stable, it does not vibrate or anything, so it is great for use in the car!!

I was looking for a way to mount my new GPS unit in my car, and found this stuff mentioned in a GPS forum.

Thats what I was thinking. Ever since I got the tiny square with the V1 I've been looking for a source to but it in larger pieces. I've tried the local hardware as well as the local craft stores. The best I found was a horrible no name knockoff at the craft store. So, where'd ya get it?

that is the stuff I have used to mount my concealed display in my dash. Nothing holds like it. 3M marine quality velcro (or something like that)

and yes it is included with EZPass and other toll paying devices.

You can pick up a package at most hardware stores for around 6 bucks.

Do you know if a Canadian citizen can have an EZpass ?

How much it cost ? Is there a minimal obligatory use ?

I would only use every 6 weeks to travel to NY and back.

You can find it all over the place online, or go to your local Target store, go to the homeimprovement section where they have all the tapes etc... you'll find it there under the "Scotch" brandname. It is the 3M stuff though.

Its only 2.99 for like 4 good size strips. That should be more than enough for most mountings.

I actually just re-did my V1 Remote display mount with it also, and it is much much more stable than it was with the velcro.

Yes this stuff holds great. That in some cases is a problem.

I used it in my drag car to hold an air gauge and a weather station to the tin work. It held so good I slightly bent the tin work removing these items on a continual basis. I eventually went back to the regular Velcro stuff before I metal fatigued the aluminum.

My concealed display came with regular old Velcro, or maybe the piece was so small I discarded it without looking, I don't remember. Anyway, last night I replaced my velcro holding my remote display in place with this stuff... its so much more stable now... feels like its screwed to the underside of the dash.

Instead of standard adhesive, this stuff is using double sided foam tape. Oddly the black product comes with white foam, urg. For my installation, I blacked out the foam with black marker. As for the additionaly hieght, it makes the product much more "visible" than the velco. However the slightly raised position is actually puts the display in a better viewing position. Too bad the ugly edges of the display are so visible.

Regarding the stock fastener that comes with the remote display, the loops are much closer together than this stuff. Target had some fasteners that resembled the V1 stock stuff, but they where green, small and used for picture hanging. My guess is that the more dense stuff can only be used in smaller sizes like the 1/2 inch square since it would grip too much in larger sizes.

I'm still not happy with my V1 remote display installation, but this will do until I can figure out something better.

Before I found the stuff at a local target like you are describing, I placed an order from Target.com That order arrived the other day. The stuff from online which is actually labled as 3M dual lock fastners was much more dense then the Scotch brand from target and didn't use the double sided foam tape.... this might be what you are talking about.

I like the less dense one, because I feel like the bond is much more stable...

Just renewed my Pbase subscription so I could host some photos. The first 2 are the comparison between the Target purchased Scotch "Dual Lock" and the product the VR is including with the remote display. Both have the "3M Dual Lock" label on the back, and both are using a thin layer of white double sided foam for adhesive. I've also seen the foam products labled "for rough surfaces". The last photo is the remote display atop my steering column. I didn't realize what a horrible job I did on the install until I looked at these macros :oops:

As you can see the profile of the 3m product is pretty prominant. I'm still looking for other options for the mount, but in the mean time, the dual lock is superior to the old style velcro.

As for the tight grid vs the loose grid, the loose grid is holding the remote display very solidly. I suspect that if I used the same size tight grid product, that I couldn't seperate that large of bond and would probably yank the adhesive apart.
