Detector recommendations

This is my first post here.

I live in New England. I'm not sure how much radar is used in my state (CT), but we frequently take trips to NYC, NJ, PA, NH, and ME. Back when I was in college, I would commute out to Boston. I got busted for speeding once when the state police were sitting next to a 30 mph stop sign at the bottom of a hill (the top of the hill the speed limit was 45). Anyways, I got a Whistler DE-1610 detector shortly after.

I can't find it, and I wasn't impressed that much with its detection capabilities. What got me thinking about getting a detector again was this week I had to go to Radio Shack to buy some parts. I saw the detectors, and after looking through them, bought a Cobra XRS 9675.

I read this forum afterwards, and returned the detector today. I was not impressed. I went by a cop, and while he might have been running instant, the detector only went off (Ka alert) after passing the cop, and only at 1 bar of signal strength. If I was speeding, I would have been caught big time.

So I'm thinking about the E795 or the V895. I don't have the money to spend more that $200, and from reading the reviews, it sounds like the V895 is a nice mid-range detector.

I normally drive the speed limit, and on the highway, no more than 10 over. Is the V895 overkill, or would the E795 be okay for me? The only differences I can see are the:

Display
POP Detection (but it sounds like there aren't many POP guns in use today)
More sensitive receiver for the V895.


Any insights would be appreciated.

first off welcome to the forum you have come to the right place i would get the v895 if u wanted to choose from those 2 but may i intrust u in a X50 or Rx65 i promis u you wont be let down from any of these units :)

I live in CT and mostly drive on 15, 91, and 84 and my X50 red has never let me down.

Based on my expeirence and observations of the E795, it is a horrible detector.

Come on guys, respect his price range.

The 895 is a solid unit. If you can deal with falses, take a look at the Whistler Pro 73 ($150) or Whistler Pro 58 ($100). The Whistlers have very good sensitivity, but they frequently false.

Get your hands on a used Escort 8500. It is a winner!

I second VW242. Pickup a used 8500. It is pretty decent on the radar bands. It won't support POP, but then again the X50 doesn't exactly excel at POP either. It makes a great choice and should be within the price range your looking to spend.

How much POP radar have you guys encountered? Is there much out there now?

Also, will it probably be a few years before Ku band radar becomes a real threat?

POP isnt encountered often at all... I believe the amount of POP capable guns compared to non-POP capable guns is just around a fraction of 1%, so the odds arent good being tagged with POP... Neveda has about 100 it its entire arsenal, and thats about the biggest cache you will find of POP anywhere.

Ku won't become a threat here for sometime, if at all by the way things look right now.

I see some of the 8500 models on Ebay in my price range... question is: should I take a chance on an Ebay purchase, or should I get a new V895. Remember, I don't go very much over the limit, and the detector is just to warn me of traps if I forget the posted limit around town, or am traveling on highways and forget how fast I'm going :0)

Any insights would be appreciated.my Pick for you would be the bel vector 895 model its the best radardetector for $200 the range runs neck to neck in there with the higer price models like the v995 and escort passport x50! and the only thing is these 2 radardetectors they offer and have more features only!!range is the same in real world driveing though trust me 8)
