Well this morning was interesting. I work on a military installation and was coming into work. We had the "random" vehicle search thing going on and I was selected for inspection. Not a big deal as I have been through this many times. All went well and I was read the standard riot act about the use of radar detectors on the military installation, and that I need to have it unplugged an not just turned off. Well that wasn't the best part as I always have my RD turned off on the installation and I am aware of the rules.

Then I was told the hum dinger of the year. I was told that if my RD can detect laser that it is illegal in the state of Colorado and it will be confiscated by local and state police if I get stopped! I told the officer that the law that went into place prohibits jammers, but not detectors. He rudely interupted me to tell me he just came from a police conference where they were informed by the state and local police that this was now the law in the state of Colorado and people are for the most part unaware that this was part of it.

Now I have read new law that went into effect, and I saw nothing about laser detection devices. I guess I better re-read it, but near as I can tell they are really dancing the fine line here between truth and fiction in Colorado if this is the case.

it's only against any counter measures that stop laser in some how print out a copy of the law and keep it with you :lol:

I think you're safe because it excludes "equipment that is legal under FCC regulations" from the ban. Radar detectors being one of them.

The word passive was used but followed by interfere, disrupt or scramble so I believe detectors are safe from all the wording that I read.

I didn't see anything about laser in that pdf. It sounds like they worded the law for RMR products. The legislature of CO must be stupid enough to think that RMR products actually work. :lol: Who knows what other laws they have passed because they THOUGHT they knew what they were talking about. :shock:

That was my take as well. However since Veil and Lasershield are passive devices that interfere with use of lidar they would be subject to the new law. As far as I know this is the first law in the US, I've seen that makes Veil illegal.

At the end of the day, if they're able to detect us, what's the harm in us civil folk doing the same. Only difference being that we don't make the revenue they do.

It sounds to me like the LEO's didn't bother to read the law for themselves and this story has been repeated from person to person... Like the telephone game. I can see how this all probably was started, and since less than 10% of any particular group of people will research something for themselves this will just keep spreading.

I have a copy of the law I will carry with me from here on out. The observation that Laser Shield, Veil, or even a car bra could be considered illegal is a pretty broad brush stroke, but I think the way this is written it is correct that these things are now illegal if they perceive these things impaired the LEO's ability to get a reading from laser.

Just to give you a little more info. The military SP's on this installation just recently bought new Laser Pro 3's and have been out testing them. So I think his "laser like" vision on this topic may be heightened by the fact that they have new toys :shock: :? :lol:

I don't know if it is worth it, but I would get in contact with the officers superior and kindly explain things... so that word gets back to that officer that he is incorrect. I think that would put him in his place and take him down a peg or two, he sounds like a prick.

Well the plot gets a little thicker this morning. The SP's have now decided to modify their enforcement of the radar detector rules on the installation. This morning I was told you cannot even have the RD in the window or will be ticketed. I was just told the other day during the vehicle search that the RD just had to be unplugged so the story seems to be changing daily depending on who decides to jack you up that day.

It is pretty obvious at this point the sudden increase in interest is due to the new toys they recieved on the military base. So I am a little ticked off this morning as now I have to do the put it up, take it down routine. This is going to get pretty old, pretty fast. Fortunately I will be moving this summer so I guess I won't have to deal with it for much longer...

I have always heard that on base you have to completely take down the detector, guess you had some lienent poeple allowing you to get by with out the hassel before.

yea coming on my instalation i usually just turn it off and i never have a problem but once in a while i get **** for it. I dont really understand the concept because honestly do you think its gona stay off just because they say so i just turn it on later.

Unfortunately, there are some cops that like to make things up as they go, including their interpretation of the law. Talking to his supervisor may or may not do any good, but it's worth a try.
