I've been using my Circuit City purchased 4.5 "S7" for about two months now. Its interesting that I purchased my RD only a couple of months ago, yet it is the earlier 4.5 S7. It must take a while for Circuit City to get their OEM orders from Bel, then processed and allocated at the CC warehouses, and finally shipped to their stores. Anyway, I am happy that my V995 is an S7.
I don't know if filtering is better with the 6.3 versus the 4.5. I too thought that K band seemed to be weak when testing my V995 on K band door openers. This caused me initially not to trust my V995 during the first few weeks of use. Yet I've recently made a few long distance road trips and have found its sensitivity to K band police radar to be exceptionally good -- blistering in fact! I've also had enough time now to verify that my V995 is at least twice as sensitive as my trusty old Cobra RD-4100 which used the biggest radar horn ever fitted within any radar detector except possibly for the old Fox Super Trucker model which I have never seen the insides of.
I keep saying that somehow Bel and Escort have figured out a way to filter door openers. The filter seems to reduce the ramp up for door openers. Is it possible that some 60hz AC hum gets through the door opener's power supply to cause a weak 60hz amplitude modulation of the door opener's signal? Is it possible that when the RD detects this 60hz modulation that the RD "guesses" that this signal is coming from a door opener and then applies a filter to reduce the ramp up for this signal?
This really is a question for Jimbonzzz to get his thoughts regarding this nice little theory of mine. It does seem to bear up in practice because I now have had a couple of instances where I was near door openers yet an approaching patrol car suddenly caused my detector to not only alert to it, but also seemed to kill the ramp up filtering for the door openers. Thus my detector displayed and ramped up strongly for the patrol car, yet after it passed I got a much stronger signal for the door openers for a very short while before the door opener signal strength suddenly ramped back down. I was parked in a parking lot during one instance and was waiting to make a left turn during the other instance.
