Well half of your query seems answered... the other half regarding the GPS camera alerts in spots with no camera:

I have had a couple of similar situations on freeways where there isn't even a set of lights or intersection... BUT... the system was actually alerting me to the camera that was setup above the freeway on an overpass bridge... could this be the case in the areas you have experienced?

Would be good to know the locations and the exact message provided (redlight, speed trap, etc.) so they can be reported to Belscort. The database is provided by Trinity which is reportedly very accurate so I am sure any confirmed inaccuracies would be well received by both Belscort and Trinity.

Another rough guide is to check Trapster to see if anyone else has reported cameras/traps in those locations.

Well Trapster might explain a some of the speed camera alerts i've heard because i have seen them set up in those areas.
