Our laws are way too restrictive. I'm not a lawbreaker by nature, but I will always drive with CM's in Soviet Ontario (nice one Jerry!). Why should the Police have the upper hand and a complete imbalance of power? I'm anxiously awaiting the outcome of dcdave's court case in June. Can't wait to see what happens in his case. The OPP Nazi identified his RD by name as well. As an aside, I drove by an OPP Nazi Weds. He had a Spectre visible clear as day in the middle of his windshield. I just smiled and waved while driving by ticket free with my STi-R Plus. Gotta love the M3 Stealth feature.

Hmm... thinking of loopholes... if it's illegal to have one in your car, maybe mount it to the outside of your car! Then it's not in the car, haha. If the wording doesn't allow for that, have a bicyclist pace you with a detector. See, it's not in a car, so it's legal! Bwahahaha!

    Stupid laws should be broken.
The politburo in Ontario has already taken away the loophole. The law's wording makes it illegal to have a vehicle that "contains or is equipped" with a detector.

However, since ownership or usage is not deemed illegal by the regime, you could hook up your detector to a 12v source and walk down the street, or hook it up to your bicycle, or boat, or plane.

Actually if my memory serves me. It is also illegal for a citizen to sell a radar detector in Virginia.

Let say you wanted to post one for sale on craigs.

So I'm risking losing my detector if I drive across the border into Ontario, even if it's turned off and stashed in the glove box?

I thought only use of the detector was illegal there, not possession.

A great reason to stay in Michigan and lose my money at our own casinos.

I don't like leaving my handgun in the US when I cross over either, but I can at least understand their reasoning (some what) on that issue.

    Oh well, it's their country...

I still don't think, based on the limited info the OP provided, that the cop had a legal reason to make the stop.

Talk to dcdave about a LEO's legal right to search a vehicle. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Ontario is the WORST jurisdiction in NA to get caught with CM's. Think Nazi Germany if you want a feel for what powers Ontario LEO's have with the sheeple.

Haha nice!! Running a stealth remote M3 detector in illegal RD territory when law enforcement is clearly searching for them must be an awesome feeling!!

Technically yes. The way the law is worded, it would be illegal for you to have a detector in a locked briefcase in your trunk! Believe it or not, the usage of the detector is not prohibited, just having one in a car, on a car, inside a car, outside a car etc is in violation of the law.

It wouldn't be the first time a person who was caught in the possession of contraband got off due to a technicality / error on behalf of the cops. The fact that he was actually in possession of an illegal RD may be irrelevant if the cop's traffic stop was illegal.

On a related note, search YouTube for a video titled "Don't talk to the police"...some great tips on how to conduct yourself if pulled over by police and how to prevent incriminating yourself. Since watching it, I know that I will conduct myself differently next time I am stopped.
Obviously he did - and no surprise - he was 100% correct. When you play with fire, sometimes you get burned. Lesson learned.

I wonder if the cop does what most cops do with nice toys. Throw it in their locker for 6 months and wait to see if someone asks about it.

No one asks, its now recovered by the officer as found property.
No, that is NOT what most cops do. What a ridiculous statement. I know more cops personally (including my siblings) than you have friends, not a single one of them would do that. A correct statement would be, "Most people with radar detectors speed."

I have NEVER met a RD used that doesn't speed on a regular basis, including myself.
