Around the university in Chico, CA 3 mph over will get you a $300 ticket. Rolling stops are $375. State hired more CHP even with the budget crisis and they are exempt from the furlough days the governor has imposed on most state agencies except the CHP "Since they make money for the state." They even got a sweeter retirement deal last September over other state agencies and teachers.
School zones suck if they are in maximum enforcement mode. One cop pulled an entire herd of cars over for being over 25 mph. Co-worker got stopped in her van and ticketed for 5 over. Cop just stood in the street near a wide corner by the school at 8 AM and pointed everyone over and ended up tagging everyone. School zone tickets are probably out of sight with the new local court fees they add on.
It's getting very costly in CA for any ticket and backed-up traffic court judges push the cases quickly so you have no defense and they won't listen to more than two sentences out of you. That traffic school costs another $60+ now too. Sitting in traffic court all you hear is $800 this or $900 that. Plus, if your get a suspension by the judge, a cop will follow you out the parking lot and have your car towed and impounded on the spot. I thought seeing a flatbed tow truck in the courthouse lot was weird and maybe someone had broken down, but he makes money on license suspensions. If you can afford a lawyer, he will wander about the courtroom and go up and talk to the judge at times. He wants to leave. Sort of funny to watch them work the system, but their clients seem to get dismissals where others don't. Course, it costs a bundle too.
Be careful out there.
