Comments about the 9500

1. I miss the slanted display of the x50. When mounted high along side the rear view mirror i dont get a clear look at the display. the x or k letter is cut off.

2. They need to offer it in blue

3. When in highway i had a one bar k band signal from a door opener at walgreens. When put on city mode it was gone. It verified this multiple times by shutting down the unit and changing the sensitivity setting. Even though escort claims city mode only reduces k band i am wondering about this.

4. I locked out a known false for k band at eckerd today. upon drving back through the area the gps did filter it out. I transmited a k band radar at this point and the 9500 started screaming. Therefore in my opinion the gps filtering works great.

5. The auto dim feature does not work well when the unit is mounted high on a windshield. When i put it on the dash it worked great. When mounted high (where i keep it) the unit is too dark during the day.

6. The auto volume feature i did not noticed any difference. I tripped off the unit when the car was quiet and when the radio was turned on fairly high.

7. Big problem i noticed was the gps on the 9500 and the useage of a sirius satilete radio. My sirius antenna i have on the middle of my dashboard up by the window and worked great for over a year. The sirius immedialty loses its signal when the gps filter is activiated on the 9500. I had to re-route the antenna on the sirius sat and move the antenna. This did fix the problem. Minor inconvience but one none the less.

8. I love the speed display feature.

9. The frequency of the ka stalker radar i have was picked up by the 9500 instantly upon transmitting the unit. "34.712 was displayed".

I have onlu had the unit for a day. So far i am very impressed. The gps feature only makes this unit great. No more falsing going down the road. FINALLY!

Nice review. Should help anyone on the fence.

We don't have many straight and flat roads here in NNJ so those tests are less meaningful to me.

So with that in mind...

Since you have access to all Radar Guns... Can you do some "real world" distance tests?

i was planning i have to wait till i get back to work. So far i only had the unit one day that i was working i just tested it with the stalker dual in the car and like i said by the time i realized my finger from the xmit/hold button the unit was screaming. Then again it was in the car with me. I go back to work monday and wether permitting will try and test its range out vs ka radar

Regarding:

1. I like the flat front since it is used on the bike. I wish it were able to be tilted up or down by maybe 20-30 degrees as I look down on top of it so the display isn't as readily visible.
The 8500 was slanted to the left. On a bike, the 8500 volume control was on the left side of the case which allowed one to use their free clutch hand to operate the unit' volume control. As such, the 8500 display was always facing the wrong way for bike owners. Might be the reason for the change?

2. Blue? Yes. Then, it would be pretty cool if the display were in color too. Maybe a green satellite that changed to red when signal was lost?

5. I left the AutoDim on High since I have a tinted visor so it appears brighter.

6. On a bike, the Auto Volume was way too much. Still is too loud through the earphone jack even off Auto Volume off and the Volume control all the way down. I need to play around with the Com system's mixer to see if I can resolve it through there as the detector has precedence over other audio and mutes all others for the 9500i's alert voice.

7. I have XM satellite radio on the bike and no problems with the 9500i radar or GPS - and they are all inches from each other. The unit interfaces to the Garmin Zumo GPS system and all are plugged to a central AutoCom mixer. Garmin GPS operates normally as well. No differences since the addition, other than the volume of the 9500i is much more than the 8500 series.

There is something going on with the bike's proximity two-way alarm system. Don't know what is causing that. It may be a defective alarm unit. I'm in contact with the Scorpio alarm factory on that one since I had to pay the dealer 2 hours shop time ($180!) for the installation that wasn't.

I also like the flat front... since I always mount my detectors to my left... Alsos, its much more readable for me if I'm sitting in the passenger seat and the wife is driving.

I guess the front facing red display is just more universally accepted. I personally like the slanted blue, but am probably in the minority in regard to overall sales figures. I guess this tells us that:

1. The blue display just isn't ready for market yet.

or

2. Sales figures for blue over red were not high enough to warrant a seperate manufacturing process for a 9500i Blue.

I'm tend to lean towards #2....but I'd hate it if I buy one and they come out with a blue version....

I'd venture to say that it is much easier to produce a product with 0 variants than a product with 1 or more variants. In this initial launch period, production volume is probably their primary concern. As such, even if the blue display is ready for production, and demand was there, they would probably still only produce the red displays in order to maximize volume for what they view as their primary market (red display customers). So, I'm guessing its #2, but, "for the time being," eg the initial launch period.

personally I never want to see anything blue in the cockpit of any thing I do at night. it screws with your eyes and for me at least would never let mine adjust correctly.

it would be cool if it was blue during the day and a light orange at night.
